Mall vs Department Store

I used to think that if I could just make enough money to buy my kids clothes from the mall that Id be hitting all the nails on the head to once. My kids would be cool and the clothes would last longer because they are made better. They have to be because they are so expensive! Thats what I honestly thought. NO way could department store clothes stand up in comparison.
I bought a shirt and pant set from a popular children's store in the mall. I loved the combo and it seemed pretty durable and well made. My daughter wore it to school a couple of times and we got to the 3rd washing and discovered the whole sleeve unraveling. I paid a pretty good amount for this outfit and I must say it was a bitter lesson learned.
I am not saying all mall clothing is as pitifully made as this apparently was. I am saying that this mom will be shopping elsewhere and exercising a lot more caution when shopping mall stores.
How do you think they compare?

I don't buy clothes in the mall only certain things. I mostly shop at the department stores you get more for your money and better quality.I haven't shopped at the mall in forever so not exactly sure how their clothing is now though. Sorry you had to experience that but atleast you know for next time not to get your clothes there.

While expensive clothes would reflect it's brand and durability, this doesn't mean that cheaper clothes are not of good quality. Sometimes cheaper clothes would even last longer. That is actually the reason why it takes me a long time buying clothes. I would have to compare prices and take a look at every part of it before buying.

This particular shirt looked well made. It is a knit sweater though and with those, the slightest bit of yarn that is loose will send the whole thing unraveling. I am thinking of bringing the shirt back to the store and seeing about an exchange. Maybe a different style of shirt will do better by us.

I'm not sure. Whether it looks well made or not is quite subjective. But when I look into shirts and any type of clothing, I would use to stretch it a lot to check if it looks well made. I am sure you have checked it. What I'm not sure is whether what looks well made to you would look well made for others. There was one time I bought a costly shoes in the mall thinking it was really well made. I even checked everything, from the soles to the inside, the leather but when my parents saw it, they bought agreed I wasted money on it. Hahaha... In your end, if you have checked on everything then perhaps we can just conclude that "Looks can be deceiving." LOL

i find that some designer clothes are often horribly made and like you said, do not stand up to numerous washings. i don't know if department store clothes are much better but they seem to last longer. i once bought a designer backpack and it lasted me about a month. i was not impressed at all!

Right! And I can only imagine how much that designer backpack cost you. Rich people might be able to replace their things every few weeks, but for those of us not so financially fortunate its a real bummer when these products don't live up to our expectations. It is like throwing money out the window.

I think the malls are bit costlier than department stores. Here in this place I have seen the price of product is differs according to the locality. If it is a rich people area then the product is costlier and if you go to a normal market the same product will get in fewer prices. Irrespective of the higher price there may not be any guarantee of quality on things from malls. If you go for branded items the price must be stable in all place and you can sure about the quality too.

I would hope that for the price they charge for branded clothing it would last more than three washings but this has not been the case in my personal experience. I loved the outfit and so did my daughter. She felt pretty and glowed with happiness when she wore it. We are both sadly disappointed with what happened. Im not sure I want to risk buying more if that is the norm for that brand of clothing.

Well, my mom's shopping at the vintage stores instead. She loved that she could find some clothing in a treasure hunt fashion and sometimes, re-tailor it herself (she's good with a thread and a needle like my grandma). We don't usually buy clothing from malls anymore because of the material and the price. She would only resort in buying shoes from and jeans. Anything else is from the shops she visits which are often off the radar. My grandma used to be a great dressmaker herself and she demanded that we wear the finest garments she can made. I guess even if my mother doesn't make us the actual garments, she makes it a point to take us really presentable with quality clothes.

If by vintage you mean thrift stores then I have been known to buy from there too. I like the variety and the cheap prices. Once in awhile though I will make an effort to get brand new clothes for my kids. This time I happened to pick a popular mall store and it seems that the outfit I bought was defective and I wondered if all brand name clothes are similar quality.

Oh, that must have been very frustrating for you. I would also think that more expensive items would last longer. That's what we're paying for, aside from the brand. But, I've also bought cheaper items that have lasted for some time, and even longer than the more expensive ones, especially if I take good care of them in washing and storage.

I have definitely found it to be true that the cheaper clothes do last longer. Maybe it's because they spend less money on material and more on stitching or something of that nature. I have cheap dollar store clothes that are on their hundredth wash and they are just now getting faded and showing some wear.

Wow, that's good for you. In our place, however, cheaper items break easily more than branded ones. So, we take a really meticulous look on the quality of cheap goods before buying, otherwise, it's just like throwing money away, more than saving.

I'm not really certain what you mean by "mall vs. department store." Macy's is a department store, as are Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman--all higher end department stores. Macy's is often an anchor store at malls, so does that then make it a mall store or a department store?
At the same time, I've seen plenty of low-end mall stores. There are certain stores that signal the downturn of a shopping mall (I won't bother naming any names here). Once they move in, it is a clear sign that the mall is going to be taken over by gangs of roving thugs, and the only people who will shop there are the ones who don't have the means to go elsewhere.
When you buy clothing--whether at a thrift store, boutique, shop at the mall or freestanding department store--you examine the clothing for durability. Does this piece look cheaply made? Is it of a quality fabric? Price tag does not guarantee quality. However, certain brands have built good reputations, because their pieces actually hold up (Tommy Hilfiger springs to mind).
When you launder clothing, you choose the most delicate method appropriate. You choose cold water (which also saves energy) over warm or hot unless the piece can: a) handle it and b) is actually soiled in such a manner that it is warranted. You hand wash if the item is fragile (as are a number of pieces I own).

Some brands seem to have very good quality, other brands not so much. It seems to depend on the brand. For example, Old Navy is more expensive than Target, but in my opinion Old Navy's quality is WAY worse than Target clothing's quality. Ugh! One would think that has the price goes up, so would the quality, but this is simply not true!

Department store's are inside mall premises (so I am a bit confused on this)
Anyway, since you've stated branded and un-branded clothes I agree that most branded clothes last longer than the cheaper ones.
However, there are cheaper brands that also last long in terms of clothing.

When I think of department stores I think of Walmart or Target. And the point of my article is that the branded clothes I bought didn't last longer than the unbranded. I was asking if it was the norm or whether I might have just gotten a defective shirt.

Yeah I definitely do NOT shop in the mall, cannot afford it. I don't believe in "name brands" being any better than other brands. My clothes as a child ALWAYS came from walmart because my parents had 4 kids and that is all they could afford. We had no other option about it and we knew it...
Now that I am a mother myself I do the same thing. My kids get clothes where ever I can afford them. The mall is definitely not an option at all. Thank God I Home School my children so I don't have to worry about them wearing cool clothes or being unpopular because of it. Another plus for Home Schooling!
I'm sorry and glad at the same time that you learned that lesson because its the truth. Name brands are not always the best and they are VERY pricey for a NAME!!

Well in my mind that the point is not you buy your clothes in a mall or a department store, the point is you should learn how to select a good quality clothes,as we all know there are good quality and bad quality both in mall and department store,so if we know how to select the clothes then ew also can pick some very good quality clothes with less money.
So first of all you can learn some textile knowledge by yourself then you will know that how to select your clothes.

It really depends on what product will some consumer opt to buy, regardless of the establishments both do good in selling goods for a much cheaper or higher costs.
Malls and Department stores are different modes of shopping experience of the individual they differ mostly on their business locations and differ on the things they are selling.
A mall has much space compared to department stores which is a small business establishment and has limited sections, whereas in a mall establishment, one can navigate from one building and one shop to the other…
Furthermore, A department store is much more sought after residential places somewhat like nearer to community housing places, which people feel convenient to go over since it is quite near to where they are residing compared to Malls which is most likely built in the heart of the city. The mall in the contrary, has many different independent stores that are owned by designer and luxury proprietor.

I have bought expensive clothes only to find out they don't last, fall apart or lose their shape. I have learned that it doesn't matter the price, it matters the quality. There are only a few trusted brands that I like. If you can find a couple of trusted Children's clothing brands, I would just stick with them. Most children's brands are stylish enough for children. Children's clothes not only need to be made well but also allow children to move freely. They need to be simple so children can dress themselves. Quality is better than 'cool' for children's clothes.
