What role IPL played in test series defeat against England ?

I know the major reason for defeat was underperformance by Indian team but what is the reason for good show put up by England team. The answer is IPL. Through playing in IPL the cricketing nations outside Asia, gains much required match practice on these spin friendly pitches. They play against our best bowlers in our home and get used to the conditions. So decreasing the home advantage. If you remember the match against Australia in recent T20 world cup in Srilanka Shane Watson teared apart the Indian bowling especially spinners. And he said in post match presentation that playing in IPL against these same bowlers helped him a lot.

I think IPL had a limited role in the test series against England. The role was that Indian batsmen did not have the patience to fight it out in the middle. Every now and then when they were bogged down, they were playing loose (release) shots and were getting out due to this. I think this was one of the biggest issues for the poor scores put up by our batsmen. Cheers! Ram

I think equal credit for that should go to Andy Flower who in his time was a very good player of spin. So I think he might have helped the English batsmen adjust their technique to suit playing against spin. Cheers! Ram

Hey ram_cv , Poor score put up by Indians on their score card is the one of the another reason why Indians slipped from the game. Along with it I find that the poor bowling from Indian blowers is the another reason. Anyway past is past and the Indians should find wins in the coming matches.

We all know why Indian batting failed but question here is how England batting emerged and tackled spin bowling and for that I think England batsmen should thanks IPL

I dont think IPL has got any role to play in this loss. It was just good plannimg by england. You have to admit it. Cook was brilliant. Both as a captain and a performer. We should take Ipl positively as it provides a platform to players who are under financial crisis and a platform to be recognized amongst the world. When the youngsters share the dressing room with greats like gilchrist, gayle, kallis and etc they come to know about the class of these players; how to handle pressure and also these players share their experience with the yongsters. Ipl has really rose the level of cricket according to me.

Everything has two aspects i.e, positive aspect and negative aspect. The positive aspect of IPL is what you talked about that is young players playing with star cricketers and the negative aspect is what I talked about that is overseas players getting used to Indian conditions.

Hmm.. so in a way the IPL is nullifying the spin advantage India used to have. So, may be we should have IPL in South Africa and Australia more, so that more of our batsmen get used to playing fast bowling. Perhaps this is called "Globalisation effect".!!

Thanks, I just saw the best response tag. In 2009, IPL was played in South Africa. Yet, this cannot happen everytime.

I also wish IPL should be outside asia so that Indian cricketers can get used to fast tracks and which eventually will result in improvement of our overseas records.

I felt that inconsistency in both blowing and batting is the reason which lead Indians to the great loose. For the first game Indians were doing good and they had won the game but in the second and third game India did not dominate. So dominating the game with steady fall of wickets and scoring the runs is quite important. I hope Indians learned something from this series.

The only main learning is: If you do not get basics of batting and bowling right in test matches, you are gone- home tour or be it away tour!

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i do not think IPL has any role to play in the recent disappointing performance of the Indian teams. i think if cricket is played with good spirit then it can never be a deterrent for a player and his performance. I think it is ridiculous to drag IPL into this and rather than discussing about their performance now we should focus on how to improve their performance in the coming series so that they do not succumb to another defeat. What say?

Firstly we cant improve their performance and Secondly you cant rule out role of IPL in how englands batsmen handled spin on Indian pitches You also know that englands batsmen are not good at handling spin bowling on Indian pitches the previous records will tell you but now with IPL they had much needed exposure to spin mystery.

Definitely IPL is reponsible for this defeat against England.Because of IPL Indian players are concentrating more in hitting boundry rather than to spend time in the pitch which is very very key in test cricket.Bowlers are also not attacking in their approch and rather defencive so not getting wicket in quick time.It is also true that foreign players are getting more benifits than Indian player.Beside earning huge amount of money they are getting famillarize with subcontinental condition.

Yes you are true they earn huge money and get much needed experience and here I will say that if BCCI want to stick with IPL then atleast move it outside asia so that our cricketers gain exposure and experience of fast tracks around the world

I never gave a thought to this aspect. Yet, playing in different conditions does helps players. May be, some of the players from Indian team should play in English county cricket, or may be try playing in South African club teams, to get used to playing in those conditions. Also, domestic cricket should have a greater priority. One way to go forward would be to lessen the number of matches played in IPL, and also less number of tours in a year. But when it is a question of money, neither the players, nor board seems to be willing to reduce the amount of cricket played in a year. Why England fare better at present may have something to do with the fact that they probably play lesser cricket than India, and may be lesser than Aussies. What do you say?

Here BCCI is just focusing on earning money thats why they are not moving IPL outside India. How many Indian cricketers are playing in county cricket as compared to English players competing in IPL. Thats why our overseas records are poor and teams from outside asia are improving their records here.
