Few weeks ago, my family went to the city to stroll around, checking out the Christmas market. Just spent time together. You cant help it when you walk a lot of hours, you will feel hungry. Then we found a steak restaurant that we would like to try. Then were about to open the door of the restaurant, one of the staff go out and told us that, "i'm sorry, your husband is not wearing jeans, we don't allow informality here in the restaurant". He's wearin sport pants (take a look at the pic). I was wonderin, why don't they just allow anyone or whatever their wearin to their establishment? It's a business, everyone can go in as long as they pay. Is that all fancy restaurants the same? Lesson learn for us. :P

Haha That is a wierd rule to be imposed in a restaurant. They are concerned with informality but why do they allow jeans? Jeans is not a formal wear I think. And they should post a notice outside the door. Haha

I don't know, maybe jeans are considered classy where you are or maybe you misunderstood what was said. Track pants such as your hubby was wearing are definitely a no-no.
I have no problem with public eating places having a dress rule. If you are dining there and some low type of people come in and start making a ruckus then that would be unpleasant.
Wear what ever you want to McDonalds or KFC or when eating at a street stall but when you want it to be a little special, get neatly dressed and go to attend a better class of establishment where they keep the riff-raff out.

There are two possibilities.
One, they want to keep out people who they perceive to cause a problem. People that are too loud, or have obnoxious children, or what have you.
Two, they cater to a really high-class crowd, that are obnoxious and snooty. I've met such people, and they really do exist. Because of that, they have places that only the snooty jerk people can go to.
If they allowed someone in wearing jeans or something, the snooty jerky people would get offended and not return.
So... to appease them, they have a dress code requirement.
I'm not supporting such a thing, just saying that such a thing does exist.

At first I thought that you meant that you had tried to go to a restaurant with your father and they wouldn't allow him in because he was wearing a pair of jeans. This is something that I have heard of, especially when it comes to formal restaurants. However, I've never heard of a restaurant where you cannot wear a pair of sweats and instead have to wear at least jeans.
As far as rules of dress go for entry into places, the worst that I've ever experienced in my life was when I went to Italy as a teenager and there were many places that a woman could not enter if her shoulders weren't covered or if she was wearing pants instead of a dress.

Wow, how times have changed! I remember in the 1980s guys wouldn't be allowed in certain establishments (usually nightclubs) if they had JEANS on. How ironic! It was all chinos and shoes back then, no trainers allowed!
I take it the incident you refer to was during the day (not that that should matter really) but I was just wondering, that was all.
I don't mind what guys wear during the day but I'd love it if a few of them made a little bit of an effort on nights out. The times I see their lady partners dressed up to the nines and they make no effort to look good at all.
I mean, Bradley Wiggins is the coolest man on the planet right now and only he, Didier Drogba and David Beckham made an effort to look stunning for the 'Sports Personality of the Year' on the Beeb on Sunday. Why is that I wonder? It's not as though any of them are skint. Some didn't even wear a tie.

I am sure that this restaurant will probably be losing a bit of business. That makes no sense either because sweatpants and jeans are both pretty informal things to wear. I don't think it is right for a restaurant to refuse service like that!

Surely in this day and age they would be grateful of the business! We live in hard times, where money is tight for all of us, especially at Christmas, so restaurants I feel should be much more accommodating! I can't believe they would turn away customers just because of what they wore. Talk about cut your nose to spite your face, they lose out!

Not all fancy restaurants are the same, but there are quite a few that oporate that way. In a few months I am going to NYC, and I plan to stay at the Waldorf Astoria, the best hotel in NYC. It says right on the website not to wear jeans, t-shirts, informal hats, in hte lobby after 6 PM. Evenings are more formal, evidently. Fortunately for me, those things are not a part of my wardrobe, so i don't need to worry.

The food must be so expensive that they can turn away guests and retain only those that they will allow into the establishment. Your money isn't good there. It's not enough just to have money, you need to also dress the part. Really strange rules these big fancy restaurants have. Their loss, not yours.

Jeans is not a formal wear and so I am wondering what exactly they are expecting there. It is not a good thing for such rules to be imposed on clients specially when the rules are not clear.

I guess some restaurant do have dress code especially fine dining ones inside hotels or even outside. It's really annoying but restaurants do that to maintain the posh image of their restaurant and to choose the kind of customer that they wanted to be in that restaurant like the people who can really pay. But it's really pathetic. Not because someone's wearing jeans, he can't pay his meal. Mind you, the food that they serve is not even nice -.-

Business establishments sets some rules for their costumers and sometimes it is annoying.. like what you've just write in here they don't allow not wearing jeans.. or they think a decent attire.. instead of for them to have a costumer they pushes it away because of what they set as a standard they wanna meet with the reputation of their business..

So, this is a new rule for me no jeans allowed in a restaurant. Most reastaurants and hotels are allowed here in Philippines. Its just like an no I.D, No entry sign. That is silly rule. We should allow any formal clothes in any extablishments.

Certain restaurants can afford to have a high standard dress code. Those where I can afford to eat, stop at, "no shirt, no shoes, no service".

Wow! That was the first time I've ever heard of. A restaurant strictly on formality just for lunch or dinner. That is a weird restaurant though. Maybe this kind of restaurant most likely look down on people who do not wear formal clothes which thinks that they aren't rich enough to eat inside the restaurant. Well, it is just my guess and it is just a maybe. Weird restaurant for the first time I heard.

It is unbelievable, yes at many high class restaurants they will forbid those do not get dress well, but it just happen the dress is dirty and broken, but I never hear that do not allow those people wear sport pants, that sounds crazy,so may be you can complain to some relate department.
