Is it bad to give electric fans a bath?

This is what I do when our electric fans get dirty. I just give them total bath, let it dry for almost a whole day, and use it again. I do not know if this is a bad thing but I would like to hear from you. There are some fans that are difficult to clean so I just use water and brush the hard dusts away. What is your technique of cleaning electric fans? How often do you clean them? I want to hear your suggestions.

Hard to believe that you give the fans a total bath. I am afraid it will make them out of work. Since they are not water proof, and especially I wonder whether it will be harmful for its engine. Usually I will just use the cloth to clean the fan and that's all.

I agree water spoils the fan in fact any electrical products. I hope all her fans are working properly.

At the moment they are working well, Prashu because they are quite new. I've had a few that already won't function. could it be the baths that caused them to break?

I think its advisable to just wipe the fan area and the cover with cloth or rag. And then sweep the area of the engine or machine. It's not good to wash them with water because it might cause the electric malfunction and may result in the defect of the device..

I think most device should not be wash with water..just sweep it or vacuum it..or anything just to remove the dust but not wash it. Maybe you can try wet cloth then dry , it will still work but totally washing it and putting in water is different scenario. Its like watching a cellphone drop into the water, at first it will still work but eventually it will lessen the lifespan of the device..

Thanks, Pals, that is why our fans get broken very quickly.

I use polish and a duster for mine, I have never contemplated giving it a bath or using water, because I am afraid that water will get into it and short it. I take the guard off first, and that can be a nuisance trying to fix it back. Maybe I should try water, but I wouldn't be happy totally immersing it in water.

I've done it a number of times already because it is so hard to clean them with just cloth or brush.

If you know what you are doing, many electrical items can benefit from a bath or shower. But it should only be done when you know it will fully dry out again. I assume that you live in a hot climate because one day would not be enough drying time in colder countries. Computer boards are particularly suitable for the shower treatment. They are well sealed with varnish so there is no worry of corrosion, yet the dust and dirt washes off easily. It is often the dirt that causes short circuits and destroys your computer. Just remember to remove the button cell from the mainboards first! As for fans, the ones here are of such poor quality that the bearings fail long before the dust buildup becomes a problem!

Hi Cutie, i am sure it is bad if the component gets wet. My technique is just to brush off the dust and wipe it with damp cloth, and i get it clean every week or two before it collect alot of dust which will be much work needed to get it clean again. Here's a link for you about cleaning fans from Yahoo. answers hope it can ease your cleaning technique http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070813110401AA5fAz7

I never heard that we can even give bath to electric fans. Don't thy get spoiled? If water gets inside. I just use the brush to dust the fans or some cleaning with wet cloth but its just wet no water .

I now know that I am the only one who does this but why is it that they clean air-conditioning units by washing it thoroughly with water? It has also electrical parts, right? Don't they work the same way?

hmm they have some parts which doesn't work if they get in touch with water. They should be removed first then we can use as much water as we can for washing. The companies do that way.

hi cutie18f. i don't think it is wise to clean an electric fan by dousing it with water. regardless, if you give it a whole day to dry out under the sun, there still maybe parts of it that are wet and we all know that plugged in electrical appliances and water don't exactly mix and match. as for myself, i clean electric fans once a week with a damp cloth. hope this helps. cheers and happy mylotting!!!

Fans and other electrical devices should not be immersed in water. If you do so, you run the risk of ruining the motor. It is fine--even necessary--to clean fans. You just should be careful of how you do it. You should gently spritz and wipe down the fan blades and allow the fan to thoroughly dry before plugging it back in.

It is really not a smart thing to do to bath your dirty electric fan, you can either clean it with a dirty duster or clean dump cloth wipe around the outside surface. That is about all to keep it clean and enough to keep it working fine. By giving the electric fan a bath, the worst part is you are running a risk of getting someone electrocuted or get an electric shock or even on yourself, the next worst case scenario is that you damage the electric fan delicate inner parts but avoided from electrocution, it is better for you to remember that water and electricity don't mix, it is a very bad combination.

I was always taught that electricity and water do not mix. I would never submerge any electrical appliance in water. I'm sure, if you would read the instructions for any electircal appliance, it would tell you not to put it in water. Electric motors are not meant to get wet.

This is the first time I have heard electric fans being given a bath! You should really not be doing that coz since it is electric, this should always be kept dry or else it would explode. So what I usually do is take off all the parts and wipe it with a damp cloth. Well, the blades, we can really clean it with soap and then let it dry, but with the motor, it has to be kept away from any liquid.

Hi every fan you buy should have insruction for the proper way to clean the fan depending on size what i do if it a small one 1 make sure it unplug keep the cord and engine part out of water take the fan apart clean the blades, and whipe around the whole fan unit with a damp clothe wait until everything drys then put it back together then use it. ok have a good day.

Ideally I would suggest cleaning the fan with soap and water using a rag at least once a week will be fine...you have to remove all the parts that can be washed with soap and water and let them dry or wipe them out with a clean dry cloth or rag...It will ruin the motor/engine eventually if you give them total bath..I hope my suggestion can help.

Water and Electricity do not mix well - All it needs is for fan not to be fully dry and you caould start a fire or worse an electrocution

as for me i just take off the upper part, i only wash and brush those parts, the one that turns inside and the cover, then the whole body i just used a wet clothe and wipe it. i just clean it when it has accumulated a lot of dirt and i don't really wash the whole fan, because i think the water can get inside especially on those parts where it has the wirings inside, it could affect the fan, but maybe you can just wash the body below or those areas where no water could get inside them, this is my only opinion and suggestion.
