First of all I don't know which discussion interest I should choose, so I decided to choose the default one. I'm planning to buy a washing machine for my Mom but I don't know anything about Washing machine , I've used it but never cared about the features that one should be looking for. E.g. for computer we check the hard drive, processor, RAM etc. Similarly, what should I be looking for while buying a Washing, please suggest any good model or brand and the features that I should be looking for in any Washing machine.. Thanks in advance!

Just go the shops, see the machines, ask for live demonstration, its pros and cons , warranty/guarantee etc buy the one that suits you best befitting to your pocket. Our first one was Videocon 20 years old, still running fine and the other is Samsung automatic with steel drum.

Hi Professor Ji, Yes, I think I will go by your suggestion, however, I would also like to know your experience with this Samsung machine. I'm planning for Whirlpool but Samsung is a brand that I trust in electronic items. Can you give me some detail of your usage of Samsung machine, how good has it been and is it efficient and easy to use?

I also don't know what brands you have available in India, but we bought a Maytag 23 years ago and it's still in perfect condition. It's gotten a lot of use over 23 years yet it works the same today as when it was new. I've never had one problem with it. If I had to buy another one tomorrow, that's the brand I'd get. As for features, I'm not up on the latest in washers so I can't help you there. I'm sure the technology is quite different than it was 23 years ago. Good luck choosing a good one. And that's a very nice thing you're doing for your mom. I'm sure she'll be very happy!

Thanks for your response, deazil.. After reading your comment, I visited the website and contacted the chat support, they told me that whirlpool owns Maytag now. So my choice is clear now, I'll go for whirlpool without any doubt..

This would rather depend on the person who is going to use it, along with the requirements. personally I was quite happy with a washing machine that holds a small amount because I live alone, but naturally someone who is likely to be washing for a family will require one with a larger load capacity. The best approach is to visit a couple of stores that sell washing machines and browse around to familiarise yourself with the available features, which should help you to decide which would be the most appropriate.

Hi Asylum, Even at my home only my parents are there, so capacity is something that I'll ask my mom to decide but the brand I've already decided and the front load/top load option I've to decide yet. Thanks for your response!

Washing machines these days have tone of different features from the ones years ago. But the main thing would be to find something with a nice size tub. Whether it be a front load machine or a top load machine. And even if it has to be smaller then average. Next I would look for something that does not waste water. Something energy efficient. As far as the settings, well, they are pretty basic. I would start looking in Sears. I can tell you that Kenmore products are very good. Also try looking in PC Richards. They also have a nice selection.

I have checked different websites and it seems whirlpool would be the best option for me in India. As you have mentioned, water and electricity saving is something that even I'm looking for and they say, I can get it in front load models. As far as size is concerned, I will certainly go for the bigger capacity machine. Thanks for your response, inertia4

Hi inertia, Good to know that you are also planning to buy a washing machine, I would suggest you to go through the websites of those brands which are mentioned here, that'll give you a fair idea about washing machine. Which one do you prefer, front load or the top load machines?

I think most of them are energy efficient these days. And size does matter with washing machines. Why make a bunch of loads of clothes when just a few can be done with a big size tub washing machine. Thats howI feel. I am looking for one, but I have a small space for it. But I know they make small machines with full size tubs. And my drier, thats in another and it is big. So I am good with that.

First of all let me tell you the topic is no bar over here. You can share any of your interest. Please do not hesitate in opening any discussion. Now let us come to your subject matter. Brand is immaterial, other features are important. If you have 24 hours water facility then you go for fully automatic machine, otherwise go for semi automatic. Difference between two is in first case you have to just fix the program and forget. Rest all is done by machine itself e.g.washing ,shuffling, drying the cloths and that too within tine limit. All you have to do is to just put these cloths on hanger. And in other case you have to take it out after wash and put it in a dryer and then hang on the hanger. But second one are cheaper than the first one. The choice is yours.

Hi devonavis, Thanks for the suggestion, actually that's the first thing that I do before initiating any discussion. I didn't find anything on this topic and that's why I've initiated this discussion and fortunately, I've got some very good suggestions here. If you cancel your visit to home due to some commitments at work, you'll have to be so thoughtful and yes, she's the best..

Hello there! How thoughtful of you to buy your mom a washing machine. It really depends on your budget. But I do hope you will get a washing machine with a dryer. There are washing machines which don't have one. Second, check if the manufacturer have warranty or if the spare parts of it are replaceable. I can name brands of appliances that have disposable parts. What a waste of money.\ Happy Lotting and Happy Holidays!

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i know u are not aware of the features of a washing machine and as u know little knowledge is a dangerous thing so it is better to go through the features and models of all the brands of a washing machine before buying one for your mom. I do not possess a washing machine but i have seen that the mini ones are good as far as maintainance is concerned and hence u should go for it as it will consume less space. What say?

Hi vidhyaprakash_2 I was wondering why no one has suggested Samsung, while dicussing with people here and from my personal experience I know whirlpool is too good in making washing machine, however, Samsung is something that I prefer now-a-days let it be TV, Cell phone or Refrigerator. Thanks for your suggestion, I will also consider Samsung while buying washing machine..

Hi,friend...Firstly,just clearly know your own purpose for buying this washing machine, I mean, the frequncy you use it,the clothes' Q'ty it can cover at its maximum, things like that... And,I think the Brand, the place of origin should also be much concern,of course,in most cases, the JPN Brand can have a better performance, the Chinse brand could also be a good second consider(From my knowing, the Chinse brand like "Haier" should be a fine choice. Hope you find the one both you and ur mum prefer earlier. ^_^
