Each and everyone of us have our standards and criteria in rating the discussions and posts of other myLot members. I don't know how you do but for me, I just give a positive rating to anyone who visits and gives a reliable response to my discussions and posts. Regardless of what my visitor has written, whether it is long or short comment, as long as I understood I will give a positive feedback. This is my way of saying 'thank you' for spending time for my posts.
How about you? Do you give positive ratings too? Or negative? Or you just don't rate at all?

Hi! I hope you will find time to read the earlier responses of this discussion. They really helped me to realize that what I was doing is a form of abuse. I think they are right and so I have to change how I rate other members here.

Hi! Thank you for responding here. I also still give positive rating to members who have the idea even though the grammar or the format is not that right. I understand that not all members here are good in English. Even me, I find it difficult to say what I really want to say because I have a problem in expressing my thoughts in English.

I really do give the positive ratings for other Mylot members that writes a discussion or replies to my posts. I don't really give out the negative rating at all. I sometimes think that the people giving out the negative rating are just trying to be malicious and mean. I wouldn't worry too much and stress about it. I would try to move it and enjoy my Mylot experience here.

Maybe not all those who give the negative rating have that 'malicious' thing in their mind. Maybe they just do not think that there is a relevance. I also try no to give negative ratings, I'd rather not rate.

I rate all comments positive, even if I might not agree with a response, because they did access my post and they responded to it. It really doesn't matter how long or short the post is. They have been able to say what they want to say in a couple of sentences, and that's fine as long as their response in on the topic posted. It's a great way of showing appreciation. I like to stay positive, it helps everyone here on mylot.

Nice to have you read the earlier responses, I don't know if it helped you but it did help me.
I'm confused, you said "If you rate negative, that could affect you as well, and in a negative way", do you mean it will lower my rating as well when I rate other members negative?
Sorry if ever I misunderstood it.
Q: Is there any way that the person you rated will know what kind of rating you just gave?

What a nice thought. A very nice way of helping our fellow myLotters. Try to read the earlier comments in this discussion and say what you think. Those posts made me change my mind a bit. Now I'm confused.

I always forget to rate because I enjoy to comment. Maybe after this I will rate each response. I would rate + if it is good response if response is not satisfactory I would rate - .

Haha You are enjoying too much! I think those super good responses deserve the (+) rating. Just reserve the (-) rating for those rude, harsh, and unrelated responses. Also, to remind you, not giving any rating means you are being neutral.

Yes, I rate all the members, comment and responding to my discussions. I rate you + even if you just post this --- . Well I know that people take time to go through my discussion and to my responses...so I give due credit to them. It is for free anyway, and has not to be taken out from my credits or earnings. why not.

Yeah, I have that in mind too, but I think I have to change a little bit this time. If you read those earlier comments, you will know why. These people really have a point.

I have commented above but there is something in your topic which confuses me. You say "I just give a positive rating to anyone who visits and gives a reliable response to my discussions and posts".
Does this mean that you do not rate other posts by users who are not directly interacting with you? For example, you read a topic and decide not to participate in the dicsussion - but you don't rate it either, even though it was interesting and worthwhile?

I f you skip to rate, it means you are trying to stay neutral, and it's a safe choice. This is what I learned from the earlier responses to this discussion.

I try to rate every response I get, I may have missed a few over the years. I do know I know that I have only given one or two negative ratings. And those were for responses so bad that I also removed those who made them from my friends lists.
I have no time or energy to give to those who are just hateful. But I often give best response to those who disagree with me.

I read all these reponses and am in awe of how much many of these people put into mylot. Time is a great issue to me. By rating each response I know that I have read it. This is a great site and one of it's greatest things is that it allows many different styles of use.

Okay, I'll try to put disagreeing responses to your discussions haha! Kidding!
Me too, I want to rate every single response to my discussions but the thing is that is a form abuse, according to what I learned from the earlier response in this discussion. I think I have to change my way or criteria about rating my co-myLotters.

I like how you used the word 'diversity'. It really gets boring when everyone agrees to every discussion you make haha. As long as they bring a very nice and polite argument, I can give them a positive rating. I will just reserve my negative rating for those very super duper rude and harsh responses. I just don't like this kind of approach.

I mainly give positvie ratings, hower, if their is a guidline violation, or the discussion is a one liner, I will either give those a negative rating or not rate them at all. I don't feel that all discussions and responses, eserve a plus rating. Each of us has to weight out the answer though, and decide for ourselves, if they are worth a plus rrating or a minus rating. I have had minus ratings in the past, but now, I don't eally pay attention as to whether my ratings went up or down. Mine is about as far as it can go though, so it is okay. I amhappy with my rating. Take cae, and have fun mylotting.

Thank you for the response. I agree that we have to actually weigh the responses and think carefully if these responses deserve a positive or negative rating. Thank you for reminding me this, I have to really change how I rate the other myLot members.
I don't know, since the time that I received my star for the first time, I becaome very conscious about my rating. Now it's going down, but I will try not to care much about it anymore. I hope it will not affect my earnings

Before using the rating system, I think everyone needs to read and understand the guidelines surrounding the rating system (DRS) here on myLot. When I say understand the rating system, I mean that I think members really need to think about the purpose of the rating system here on myLot. I say this because I do feel that there is a lot of misconceptions about the rating system. Particularly, the view that was expressed here that people tend to willy nilly give everybody a positive mark for everything they post. The system was created so that we could all take ownership in the rating system and assist myLot to determine the quality of member's responses and comments. This means that for us to rate a response or comment, we must first be able to recognize responses and comments that are good quality. This is why myLot does not give the privilege of using the rating system to newbies until they have acquired a 100 level myLot rating. MyLot did this because they did not want for people to abuse the rating system.
Now, I am going to play devil's advocate here for a minute. Lambie worked hard to put a stop to the trolling of members who could seriously damage a members reputation rating just because some did not like them here on myLot. I am thankful to Lambie for putting a stop to that abuse of the myLot rating system. I do think that we must also put a stop to the abuse of giving everything a positive mark here, which over inflates member's reputations here on myLot. I do think that it is good that everyone can rate responses, which does help to even it out a bit especially if we have some members running around pressing that plus key for every response. Still, I encourage you to stop and reflect does this response truly deserve a positive mark? Personally, there is a lot that I read here that I would say is good, but at the same time I would say it does not warrant a positive mark. So, I do not rate that response or comment. Lastly, I will repeat what I said above myLot would not have given us a negative button unless they intended for us to use it. MyLot gave us three buttons, so that means they intend for us to use all three buttons when we are rating responses and comments. I would say that the plus button will get the most use when you are rating posts. I would also remind everyone here that it is okay to use the minus button. If myLot did not want responses to receive a negative they would just remove that button. They gave it us, so that means use it rather than make the key obsolete. The minus serves a purpose to ensure that we continue to have a quality forum for participating with each other where we can have dynamic conversations.

aireanna there is nothing in the FAQs that tells us to rate negatively those posts with poor grammar. Indeed in the Guidelines we are told that any kind of grammar is permitted.
We are told that the negative should be used for those posts when you "feel it negatively impacts the myLot community"
http://www.mylot.com/o/faq/faq17.aspx
I know that it would be a perfect situation if all of the posts contained no errors whatsoever but I leave you with a thought:
don't you think that a)it is positive both that myLot allows everyone to join and participate no matter what their level of English and b) that those who have little knowledge of English accept the challenge to participate to their best ability, even if that means making grammatical mistakes? I say hats off to them and would rather plus them than scold them with a negative rating, as that is not what it is there for at all
A spammer, a plagiarist or a user who is flaming another, even though they use perfect English, is absolutely negative to the myLot community and that is what that button is for.

mysDianait, thank you for your comment. It has given me much to think about. Yes, I think it wonderful that everyone can participate. Still, I am speaking more to those that continuously break the guideline of using English by typing their entire response or comment in text type. Text type will never be English. There are a handleful of members here who do this on every single response. Sometimes it is so severe that it affects the readibility and understandability of their responses and comments. When it is to that severe degree that it is so poorly written in text speech that you cannot even understand what they wrote I do feel that they negatively affect the myLot community.
The myLot guideline clear states that the discussions are to be written in English. http://www.mylot.com/o/guidelines.aspx. I feel that those that are continuously typing their enter responses or comments in text speak violate this basic guideline of myLot. Maybe, I might be expressing some more extreme concers that I feel like by allowing text speak to be English that we dramatically lower our standards of the written word.
Devondavis, thank you for your compliment. I am a teacher. Maybe, that is why I feel so strongly that people need to use the basics of writting skills here on myLot. I feel like in a lot of ways text type ruins people's perception of the English language. I have worked with middle school students who wanted to insist that it was appropriate to write using text speak. So, I guess I have become an advocate for the written word. I just think that we should all strive to practice our writing skills rather than becoming lazy and typing in text speak.

Aireanna: Again, very well explained. No doubt, you are a good teacher, I don't know what is your profession but you are a teacher for me. I think you are gifted with the ability to express what is on your mind in a way that all readers will easily understand. How I wish I could also do this using the English language. Thank you again!
ForeverTheLamb: Don't worry, you're still the man! You are not losing anything when people do not listen to you. You are just telling the truth.
Mysdainait: I can't find anything here about the grammar issue but I read it on Aireanna's earlier response. I agree with you, as I have said above, everyone is going down if all of the members will give a negative rating for responses or comments with grammatical errors. It's gonna be unfair because not all members here are excellent English speakers, in fact some are still English beginners. If that's the case then myLot should not open the site to everyone, but rather for fluent English speakers.

I don't rate everyone. If I find a person's comments are really good, I will rate them positive. If someone is rude or abusive, I give them a negative. I've never reported anyone. Other than that, I just let the other comments go. I think that rating every comment is sort of abusing the system.

Hi! I think so too, rating everyone is a form of abuse, and I'm one of those people who does this. But I learned my lesson already and thanks to the earlier responses to this discussion, they really made me think again. The rating system is allowed to be used by the members to help the admin, this is one purpose.

I pretty much rate everyone that responds to a discussion I start with a "+". I also rate everyone that answers or responds to a response of mine the same way.
If for some reason the person responded in a way that doesn't make sense, I'm likely to not rate it rather than neg rate it... about the only way I'll neg rate something is if the person is abusive.
