Hello! basket lane is not cart lane...

A lot of shoppers were pissed off yesterday because the cashier herself broke the rule. She was supposed to be serving those who only have baskets or are buying only a couple of items because that's what her lane is. There is a name posted that it was a basket lane but the cashier served one who had a cart loaded with goods. I arrived late when this was happening, one lady who was only holding her two items with both hands was already grumbling because there was another woman with a cartload of groceries and she wasn't moving anywhere because she said the other woman was served so why should she not be given the same service. I butted in and told her this was a basket lane but she insisted, pointing to the lady before her that she also had a cart. I called the attention of the cashier about this, that it was a lane for those who were only buying a few items (there was already a long line of us) but she stuck to her guns and served the next woman with a cartload of goods. When it was my turn, I had to tell the cashier that she was violating their own rule and that she needs to be reported. I did make a report at the customers' complaint area and I do not know what happened after that. That cashier should be fired, in my opinion. She is hard-headed and making shopping even harder for everyone by breaking the store's own rule.

I’ve experienced the same as well, a cashier at the local grocery shop that is near in my place broke the rule and entertained those customers who were bringing shopping carts wherein she was assigned at the basket area and should entertain shoppers with baskets. But she broke the rule probably because she was afraid that the customer will yell or make a scene because she is not entertaining them, so she just put them on the line regardless of the lane specialize in basket or carts.

True, its tolerable if that's the situation, but when there are a lot of people lining up. one should abide some rules...
Thanks for your response.

I used to work as a cashier at a retail store and sometimes worked at an Express Lane. Actually, we could not refuse to ring up a customer that had more than the suggested number of items for that lane. If the lane was extremely busy with several customers with the allotted number and one with a cart full, we could mention to the cartful customer that one of the other lanes wasn't busy and they could go there. But when ALL of the registers were extremely busy, we couldn't refuse whoever was at our Express Lane.

Right.I used to be a cashier also and even though the lane said 20 items or less we would get in trouble for turning a customer away.if they went to the manager they would tell us to go ahead and do it.turn a customer away the manager is mad..don't turn them away the customers are mad but you keep your job.I went with the option that kept me employed.

She is making unnecessary hassle not for the customers but also for herself as well, because as the result of her ignoring the basket only lane she will have complaints against her. I have often found this but we have a lanes that state 6 items or less at the till. Yet so many people will blatantly have more than 6 items in their basket and yet the cashier won't say anything! So why put up a sign 6 items only. Some people clearly can't read signs or if they do, choose to ignore them selfishly.

Well, yeah I think you did the right thing. I would be angry too if I forced to wait behind someone with loads of items while the sign clearly state only the person who buy the a few items (with basket). The cashier need to be warned, not to violate the rule of the company she worked. The rule is there to make customer who buying just several items easier to be served. Some people still choose to ignore the sign although it's basket lane, they still go to there, it's cahier's job to remind them politely not to take this lane, and choose another cart lane instead, but this lady seems just blindly serve anyone who choose that lane, what the use of basket lane then?

I think you just did the right thing. There are lots of people who are looking for jobs with very pleasing personalities, more deserving, and are ready to follow rules and regulations. These kinds of people needs to learn their lessons.

I was a cashier and let me tell you a lot of the time that is out of our control.I was always on the 20 items or less lane.whenever I turned customer away they would hoop and holler making such a big deal that my manager would tell me 'just go ahead and ring her up'.they eventually told us just to go ahead and ring them all up as long as their cart is not full.THey want cashiers to enforce store policies but when the customer comes to the managers they are afraid of losing a customer they give in.

hi
Hmm this i happens in some shops especially in busy season. But this makes the problem worse instead of clearing the way soon. Hope they are following their own rule now. Otherwise it just creates lot of traffic.
