This is one of those situations where you have to look outside of what is specifically stated in the Bible and apply some discertion to what you're reading. It's hard work! I actually hadn't considered this until I found it here. Very good question! I knew the difference between a clean and an unclean animal but how Noah was to know stumped me since the definitions of clean and unclean don't appear in the Bible until Leviticus (which I had to look up). I found an interesting link that you might find useful. To me it makes perfect sense. That being said, it's probably important to point out that I am in no way a Biblical literalist. I find that the Bible is the gateway to understanding God and my relationship with Him. I do not think that the Bible is the "law". That being said, I hope you enjoy the link and that it is helpful to you. God Bless! Here's the link. I hope it works, I had to type it in, my rating is not high enough to paste links yet. http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/animals-on-the-ark/

Just be a good friend-to-all here on myLot, and you'll get the eXperience Points you need!
For example, you might actually DO some of the research you're leading me to (leaving the link so I can 'check' your research if I want).

That's good, but I was asking for the answer -not for 'the site to read to FIND the answer.'
(Not that I don't appreciate your opinion about researching; just that a) I might've been trying to aim this discussion in the 'how the ancients interpreted real life'-direction, and b) you look new, so I have to 'haze the initiate' a little )
So how DID he end up 'telling the difference'?

I am slightly confused about your response as I did leave the link and I had thought my response was phrased so that one would realize I had read a source outside of the Bible and left my opinion about it making sense to me. Sorry for any confusion.

So the Bible's just "summarizing" what G*d said here (like 'I asked her to marry me' is a summary of my life-story ).

God just sent the animals to the ark and Noah let them in. He didn't worry about who is clean and not clean animals. God told him which animals would enter the ark. The bible don't really explain much about this issue.

From Creation, believers have known which animals are kosher or clean and which are not. Clean animals are those with cloven hooves and chew their cud...Clean birds are those whose nostrils go into the face and not through the beak..(buzzards,eagles, eat carrion and have nostrils that go through and through so that they can blow the carrion that gets stuck there out.Birds cannot breathe well through their mouths.) Clean fish are those with fins and scales...

Then why did Moses feel he had to write all this down? Should be as basic as 'do not eat the yellow snow'!

I am sure Noah is not a dufus who can't differentiate between a clean and an unclean animal. He must have a pair of eye on him that enable him to see instead of guessing or assuming through touching. Many children have no problem telling you which animal is clean or which is unclean, it is not something that one need to be in possess a rocket science degree or PHD in medicine in order to know.

I am christian, and as they said, Noah did not know. God gave him the power to understand. Also unclean animals were the ones who ate meat, and blood. Merry Christmas.

The Bible is not a detailed history of every event. It tells us what we need to know. Be good and you will live when Noah is brought back to life and you can ask him all the questions you want.

God probably told him which animals were clean and unclean. He might have known about some of them too.

I am not sure with my answer, this is only based on what I heard from our church. Unclean animals are those animals which can kill humans and eat flesh and meat. And clean animals are those who only eats plants.
