Do you consider the breed/ personality before adopting them?

I have been looking for a dog for myself. I am well you could say picky about it.
I have 3 cats, 1 rabbit, and 2 guinea pigs. Now the guinea pigs are in their cage, but do come out in a playpen cage on the floor. My rabbit is free run (so he rarely goes in his cage), and of course the 3 cats roam as they please in the house.
I want a dog that can get along with the other animals (mainly Marco some dogs are trained to hunt or are hunter breeds), also with the cats. Where I can leave them all together while I go to work and so on.
I have gone and met a few dogs, once I met them thought wouldnt work. For example my parents dogs I wouldnt trust worth anything and they are husky/ lab which are suppose to be very friendly dogs.
The local shelter has a shar pei, they say he is very friendly and good with all types of animals. He looks like a big baby in the picture, I am going to email them to go meet him.
Its $200 for the adoption fee, which they coome with shots, fixed, and microchipped.

Dear Ricki,
It is important to consider the breed and personality before adopting. Make sure the new dog has the best chance of getting along well with the animals that you already have. I hope that adopting the dog works out well. Merry Christmas!

Perhaps a puppy that would grow up with the other critters and thus consider them family not food?
