Last Monday was a day of hell for me. I had to run errands I was already cursing because my MIL who is diabetic and will tell HER son she wants a dozen donuts KNOWING she is on insulin. I get in my car, start it and start up the road. I hear these weird sounds for a minute and I am thinking its time for my car to break down. Its been very good to me thus far. So I slow down. All of a sudden as I go across the bridge I hear this meowing coming from the inside of my car. I am like NO WAY I got a cat in the motor. I pull over lift the hood, see nothing. Now I am even more worried. I think if I keep driving I will wind up with a cat looking like a scene from a Joecartoon! I could just see me looking in the rear view mirror and seeing an eyeball over here and a tail over there behind me. So I had to take a tablet in and I am freaked out and talking to the computer guy. He is laughing. I get out and pop the hood again. NO CAT. I call my husband tell him about it and he says it will be ok. (MEN) By now I am thinking he is under the dash and freaking thinking it will loosen some electrical lines. I proceed to the donut shop. go inside get hte donuts come out and start car and cat is still meowing! Get to the nursing home, a guy is passing me as I lift the hood on my car YET AGAIN. He says car trouble? I said YES in the worst kind cat somewhere in my motor or dashboard! He looks doesnt see it. Tells me to get some of the janitorial help in the home to look for the cat. UGH Go inside sit with MIL for over an hour, hoping the crazy thing will jump out! Get back in the car, hear the darn cat again. By now I am aggravated. It starts pouring rain like in buckets! I think GREAT now the cat wont come out for sure. I get close back to home, but had to get 3 items for dinner so ran by the store. One of the checkers comes by hears the cat as she is going in to work, and knocks on my window and says you got a kitty for Christmas I can hear it. I tell her that is NOT my Christmas Kitty and that it was under the motor. She is now concerned over the cat. I have driven about 30 miles with this cat under my hood and its not dead yet! She asked me in the pouring rain if I would like to have the baggers come out and look for it. I thanked her but said lady if it has not come out in over 30 miles it sure as heck wont come out for this rain! I go in get my items come home. Hubby gets home. He goes out to look under the hood. I tell him its gotta be in the dash. he is looking over in the motor, I come out to assist and while he did not see the cat, there it was sitting all curled up on the BATTERY to keep warm. it was a grey approx 5 week old kitten. I grabbed him and immediately it goes into hiss attack and tries to bite me. Lil Bugger! I then notice he has stuff around his eyes, so I bet someone dropped him off and he flew up into my car. I did not want to get MY CAT infected, so I brought him in wrapped him in a white washcloth, fed him some syringes of warm milk, then put him in my car and took him to a vet that would call one of the agencies that deal with feral cats. I am still amazed he did not get hurt with all the running I had to do. But I sure dont miss him in my motor and meowing. It actually got embarrassing. Everyone could hear that cat under the hood of my car!

Ahh, those strange noises in the engine! You get people to check for the noise and it quits! Thankfully he didn't get near the fan or other moving parts. When I was living in Napa California as a kid we had a Mama cat who deposited her entire litter in a salesman's car. My father was a tv repairman and the supply houses would send a salesperson over every few weeks. Well Mama figured he would be a great papa so he got the kids, after all she needed a break! He heard meowing from Napa to Oakland. He had nearly gotten home when he FINALLY found all the noises and turned around and drove all the way back to return the brood! The poor kitten was probably terrified on top of everything else. It reminds me of a guy that was in the hospital when I was up at Stanford. The guy was recovering from a cat bite. He was a security guard for the campus health center which includes the gym. The crew discovered a cat in the gym and were chasing it to get it out. Of course the cat was terrified and instead of using their heads and opening doors for the cat to get out, they decided to grab the cat. Needless to say the kid's arm, hand, and face looked like hamburger! Plus the cat bit him out of absolute terror!!! The kid spent several days in the hospital because of the infection...and everyone asked the same question..."Why didn't you open a door for it to get outside?" He couldn't answer the question, he just looked sheepish. Thankfully he didn't bite you, and that you did give him some warm milk. He isn't necessarily a feral cat, it could be that he was so traumatized by the trip that he was fighting that monster that carried him around inside its huge mouth! I am very relieved that you are a cat person and were so worried about the poor guy...it makes my Christmas! Thank you for caring so well for the little kid!

I'd rather her a kitty in the car than the evidence of mice or a snake. I heard a story more than once about people who leave from camping out at the lake and find a snake in the car with them. Oh my. I lived in the country and we would start the car and find that the mice chewed in the car and debris would fly from the air vents! Thank goodness I never encountered one while driving down the road!

Oh my! I guess because he's so small, he could hide very well without getting into danger. I would have kept the little guy after all that, though.
