seems as i age my memory is starting to get slower and slower. i keep forgetting things and i had to depend on notes as i do my work. but what if i am not able to list what i need to do? it is all forgotten unless someone reminds me about it. again.. i say again.. because it kind of happens almost always nowadays. i was busy cooking for food for the noche buena when i suddenly had to stop and look for my eyeglasses because i could not see the written label in the package of cornstarch and can of corn kernels. it took me 2 minutes of looking for it, only realizing later that it is in my head placed like a headband. earlier, i had to put a sling on the temples of the eyeglasses so i will not lose it. i wonder if there is such a medicine i could take to have this memory sharpen a bit. do you know of any? ann

As we age, we may can't prevent the memory sharpness' loss, however I think there are some way to slow it or even to prevent it like : Diet by restricting calories and fat. Foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids (DHA) contained in fish such as tuna and soy may reduce the decline in the ability to remember the elderly. Certain nutrients to maintain a healthy brain. Vitamin B complex (especially B12 and folic acid) is necessary to maintain healthy nerve cells. Vitamin A, C, and E act as anti-oxidants to prevent damage to brain cells caused by free radicals. Lechitin is needed as a component of nerve cell formation. Fe (iron) to prevent anemia. Brain exercises such as discussions, filling puzzles, playing chess, listening to music, heard radio / television will stimulate cognitive aspects. Because it is important for older people to keep socializing and doing activities that hone thinking skills.

As far as I am aware my memory has remained unaffected by my age, assuming that I remember correctly how my memory used to be. I have never noticed any significant depreciation, so even if my memory has diminished to some degree it must be only slight. I am aware that memory loss is a normal factor in the ageing process, although I have always understood that it is related to quite advanced years.

hello asylum, very lucky you. i have started noticing that i get forgetful and lose things which i know i was just holding a few minutes ago - about the age of 45. after more than 9 years after that, its more noticeable and what has helped me are notes. but then its not enough. i wish i could find a better solution to it especially when i dont have my pen with me. ann

Memory loss is a common thing these days even for the younger generation. Short term memory loss for me is the biggest issue. I would not try medicine unless maybe it was some sort of supplement for certain vitamins or Omega 3. I have done some research and wrote an article on the subject: Brain Power: Help Restore Memory, www.diana-lee.hubpages.com/hub/BRAIN-POWER-HELP-RESTORE-MEMORY Write down things to recall later. Read, do puzzles, play games, and don't let your mind get lazy because if you don't use it you can lose it. Get enough sleep, eight hours is recommended for most people. Eat your fruits and vegetables and omega 3 fats to improve memory and prevent stroke. Something not mentioned in my article is there are a few brain foods known to help like walnuts, blueberries, strawberries, broccoli, asparagus, eggs, and fish.

Our ability to remember things will gradually fade as we age. Although we have access to medicine, I think medicine will only slow down the progress. It will not stop it from happening. I have heard before people who regularly play instruments tend to have good memory. I think it's because playing instruments is like good practice for your mind. It's like exercise for the mind to be able to play the correct notes for a song.

There are things that you can do to protect your memory. You can increase your intake of Omega-3s either through capsule form or by boosting your intake of fish; salmon is a good source. A healthy diet (plenty of leafy green vegetables and stuff like broccoli and cauliflower), regular exercise, not smoking (and avoiding secondhand smoke as well) and getting sufficient sleep are important. Also, keep your brain active; learning new things and playing "brain games" give your mind the exercise it needs. Stress can also negatively impact your memory, so you should take steps to de-stress. You mention being busy cooking for the noche buena; holidays can be a time of joy, but they also bring a lot of stress to your life. You should also consider consulting with your doctor and have him/her conduct a physical to make sure that there are no physical health issues that may be underlying your forgetfulness.
