I am in a dilemma!

A stray cat visits us every single day and our pet dog has befriended it. They have fun being together. The problem is that this cat sits under the bird bath that we have installed to attract birds. She has already targeted a couple of them. While I do feel for my pet as she has no company, I do not like this cat chasing the birds. What do I do? Should I let this cat be a companion to my dog or should I chase it away as I certainly would like those birds visiting our garden, swimming in the bird bath!

I have almost the same problem except that I don't have a dog. A really pretty stray cat keeps hanging around. She caught squirrels last summer and I didn't care about that because we're overrun with them, but now she stalks the birds at the feeder. I don't know what to do. I like the cat but I like to watch the birds at the feeder, too. I hope someone comes up with a good solution!

You are right. Feeding a stray in some localities means that y ou have taken ownership and can be held responsible for anthing that animal might do. I don't know the answer to your question.

This cat must be having an owner somewhere and so belling it and least of all feeding it would kind of mean adopting it which you will agree is not fair for the owners.

I think you should allow the cat to be a friend to your dog as it sounds like it enjoys having the cat to play with. Its not the cats fault it's just fillowing its nature in hunting birds. If the Cat didn't come to your garden It would just try and hunt them somewhere else.At least if it's in your garden you can try and limit the number of birds that it can eat.Is it possible for you to move the bird bath to a place where the cat would be less likely to be able to get the birds.Hopefully with a carefully decided placement you can have the cat and the birds visiting your garden.

I am doing just that. I am chasing the cat away from the bird bath area. I cannot shift the bird bath as it is a construction and is part of the garden decor, right in front of our house. It is a joy to watch these birds who come there throughout the day to have fun and frolic!

Your problem is..your cat is not there for your dog, it is there for the birds. So get another dog.
There is a gadget available with different frequencies of sound. At a particular frequency rats, mice, cat, and even dogs would flee. You might want to install that at your gate. Its called pest control machine. Uses electro magnetic field whatever...gosh I wish I was intelligent..lol
I have not tried it. Dad goes to these exhibitions. They have not mentioned the address on their pamphlet!!! It is wow shop...tel.nos.9000225566, 9000225577. Costs about Rs.600. I might add that I did try one such thing for lizards, it was not very effective but it cost me just a 100 bucks. So may be this one is the perfected version.

Thanks for the info vandana.I have seen these gadgets in restaurants that chase flies away. But I want that cat around for my dog to play! May be by constantly chasing it away from the bird bath area it may not come there but this is a lot of work for us!
We are done with adding more pets vandana. This little girl is a handful as it is!

vandana. We have always had dogs sometimes even as many as 4. We now want to go slow in this direction and so have one dog. But she is very happy with us and very affectionate too. Here is a picture:

Here are a few sites that might have some helpful information http://voices.yahoo.com/homemade-remedies-keep-cats-out-flower-386764.html?cat=32 and www.care2.com/greenliving/keeping-cats-out-of-the-garden.html and www.thefrugallife.com/catsout.html They're mostly to keep cats out of a garden so I guess you could use it. It was easier to look for than keeping them away from a bird bath. I would rather do this than take away the dogs friend.

That was some useful information - thanks for that. Those plants are not available here but that seems the best solution. I too would not want my dog's friend to go away. At the moment I keep her away from my bird bath by chasing her away. I have a huge place and so she could be around for my pet. Hard work. But I only hope I can plant something that you have suggested.

I posted a link for peavey (above), maybe it would be helpful to you. On that link there is a mixture you can make and spray it on the ground. It will keep the cat away from your bird bath. It must be hard work chasing her away from it all the time. Well, at least you won't put on any extra weight as long as that cat is around.

I think you should let the cat play with your dog, but that does not mean it should eat the birds.
I wonder, can you make some sort of "protection" for the birds? Say, a more elevated place, some stuff to block the cat from reaching the birds or anything likely? That would make both parties happy, i suppose.

The bird bath is a construction as you will see in the image. At the moment what I am doing is chasing the cat away from the bird bath but she continues to stay in our garden. But this vigilance for me is quite tiring!

Oh the vulnerability! I think the best way to keep the cat out is WATER, if you can make water be in between the cat and birds, it will be ok. Maybe some water sprayers in the garden?

I will try that. I have a shower which I shall switch on at the time the cat normally visits around. The birds will like the shower. Let me do it today! Thanks for your thought. Vow!
