Question about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer...

My 10-year-old son asked me this question: how does Rudolph breathe through his big red nose when there are no nostrils? Especially when he is flying, because he keeps his mouth closed. I wasn't really sure how to answer this one...I suggested it was magic that allowed him to do this, but he didn't buy it. He thinks it's a design flaw...anyone have any creative answers to this one?

You just can't see the nostrils, they are tucked under the big red part a bit.

Ahh..ok, I'll tell him. I am sure he will watch the show very carefully next time to see if he can spot them!

You can't see them, but obviously they are there, otherwise he wouldn't be alive would he...

Kids ask the funniest questions, but they do make sense. I think because his nose is so big and red, it kind of hides his nostrils but he has them on the bottom of his round hoe.. It is jut red inside too, so it kind of camouflages.

Yes, they do, don't they? I often get questions from my sons that I can't answer...and I think it's only getting worse! Pretty soon I won't be able to answer questions about their math homework, either.

I know what you mean.. kid's homework these days are becoming more and more difficult.. i even had trouble with it when i was in high school since my parents couldn't help me with the homework anymore.. since they didn't even have those topics in high school.

Agreed. Their homework is ridiculous. I'm glad we're on winter break so I don't have to deal with it.

The truth is that he has spiracles, just like an insect. He breathes through openings in the rest of his body, not through his nose (just like an insect).

Maybe that's why the other reindeer won't play with him--because they know he REALLY isn't one of them!

since rudolph has no wings either he is not flying the same way as birds do. I think he is using some magic dust to do so. So he can "save his breath" when he is "flying".

Of course...that makes sense! But how does he breathe when he's not flying--through his mouth??

haha.. your son seems to be intelligent. no one ever saw rudolph in real life yet so there's no exact answer for that. just try to tell him it's nostrils are not visible coz it's being covered by it's big nose.

Yes, that seems to be the most logical answer. Maybe he'll go for it...we'll see!

He's right. You cannot see the nostrils as they are tucked under the big red-nosed a bit of it. :) Next time your son or any person who is asking that, that would you tell. :)

I'll try it--not sure it will convince him--can't remember seeing any, myself.
