Have you ever collected bottles for money?

Canada
December 26, 2012 5:48pm CST
I live Canada and we get money for returning empty bottles. Its a way for the government to encourage that we recycle. I collected them up north for a bit because not a lot of other people don't recycle. I think I am going to start doing it again to make some extra money. Its a bit dirty but I need to do something. I'm waiting to hear back about a job so I won't be employed until then. Most jobs where I live start up in the summer. Has anyone ever done this? any other ideas to make money? (not online ideas)

It takes a lot of bottles here to make any money because they're only valuable as glass. We do get a good return on aluminum drink cans, though, and a lot of people throw them away. I knew of one guy who was averaging $50 a day (US) walking the highways and picking them up. He worked at it like a regular job, kept regular hours and so on. We can sell newspaper here, too, but scrap metal is far more lucrative. Copper, brass and aluminum bring the most, but iron and steel are worth picking up, too. Here, we turn them in at a salvage place but I don't know where to tell you to look there. Have you thought about doing odd jobs for money? Walking dogs, shoveling snow, painting indoors, cleaning garages, things like that?

I just did a little research and came across this site: http://www.blogstash.com/how-to-make-money-without-a-job/ (Not a referral link) There are 60 ways to make money listed. Maybe you could find something there to help.

Im from the Philippines. We always collect plastic bottles , old news papers, cans and even the used white papers in our house for us to sell it to the junkshop whenever it is many enough. We earn little money by doing this but atleast we have helped mother earth by recycling and earned money at the same time. :)

Never done this. It surprises me that people throw their bottles away, since, as you said, they're worth money up here in Canada. Personally, I think that anything that has the potential to be re-cycled, should be returnable somewhere for money. Imagine what that would do for the economy!

Yes, up north where I live usually most people don't recycle their bottles. I used to pick bags up from my friend's house. It was a nice little way to make extra money. A lot of recyclables end up in the landfill. My friend's father used to collect them from 2 different town dumps. He made $700 a week doing so. Thats a lot of bottles! Its very sad that it all gets put into the earth when it can be reused.

I collected bottles with my brother as a child, we'd pull our little wagon around town and pick up the empties. Now, here in the US, they don't pay anything for bottles in most states but they'll buy cans. I used to collect cans but now there are so many homeless people that need them that I let them pick them up and when I have any I put them in the alley behind my garage. They are always gone the next day. There are places that buy newspapers but you'll probably spend more gas transporting all that weight than you'll make. You're young so maybe you could shovel sidewalks when it snows? And I know you said not online jobs but at clarkhoward dot com (insert the dot to get to his site, he's an economist with a radio show where he gives financial advice on how to save money and not be scammed) he has a lot of jobs listed that are for virtual assistants, phone answering, and the like, not scams or anything. Some are online and some are not but you can be sure they are legitimate. It may be that there are one or two that would suit you.

Yeah they don't pay money for newspapers here. I'm technically homeless so I don't mind so much picking up cans.. Mostly I just ask friends if I can have theirs. I can't really shovel snow because I have a bad back.. haha I'm not that young.. but I would totally do it if I had too.

Hi, thank you so much for your encouragement! I just got back from Traveling and I am staying with my parents for a month before I head back to where I plan to live. I just got confirmation that I can rent out a room at my friend's house. So, I am no longer homeless.

Okay, I understand technically homeless. Although it was way back in the mid-70s, I was technically homeless, too. I talked my way into a position as a housekeeper and driver and that kept me in shelter for nearly a year. You can do the same thing. I assume you don't have a formal residence but drift with your laptop from place to place? Get a housekeeping gig, clean the sinks and toilets and such for 4-8 hours a day plus meals and a salary and you're golden. Meeting people that need you is a different matter, you have to be where they hang out and gossip, like a park or the lobby of their building or in front of their business. Or check out the local temp help places or those for domestic help, although there probably aren't that many positions available now--everyone's broke. I went through the same type of economy only we had a gas embargo and lined up for blocks to get a few gallons of gas. Don't get discouraged, get creative!

How much money do you get for each bottle? Do they take plastic or glass, or both? I know that some states here in the United States will credit you for taking in some kinds of recyclables, but personally I have never tried... How many bottles do you normally collect? I could imagine that you could really gather a lot if a lot of different people all gave you their bottles to recycle!

I just started collecting. It varies from province to province.. but I think here it is 5 cents for anything under one litre. 20 cents for everything over 1 litre. I used to get them from people but I have not set up a lot of collection where I am currently. My parents have started collecting them for me. I have to start asking others. It will be more difficult here because more people recycle in the big city.

This makes sense. In Canada it is common for older chinese people to collect bottles. Usually its when they are retired. They will walk about during the day and collect them. I think this is good because it gives the elders something to do and also gives them exercise.

I am curious: How much can you earn approximately for collecting bottles? I don't expect a regular paycheck or a fortune. Good luck on your job search.

At my place, we do not recycle glass bottle and I do not know the exact reason for not recycling them. I felt bad when I saw so many used glass bottles that scattered everywhere in the park, garden, rood side and so on. The daily road cleaners just placed all of them together at a place and never managed them further. Those glass bottles can easily cater the water and they will become a good place for the mosquitoes to breed. Cases of dengue will be in high possibility to be happened too. If the recycling of used glass bottles is available or popular at my place, I am sure I shall hardly see the used glass bottles scatters at wherever at my place.

I do that at home only. I segregate my garbage. I keep the bottles and plastic items then when I already have stored a sack or more, I will call a friend who buys bottles and plastic items.

I also collect plastic bottles in China, but not for money,,you know,it worth little money,if you just earn money by collecting bottles, that is really a tough job,and also waste a lot of time at the same time.I do it maily because of protecting the environment. How about selling sugarcoated haws on sticks ,this is so common in winter in china.

When I was a child it was normal to collect bottles and turn them in for money. However, I think the trend has vanished in most areas of where I live. As most things are made in plastic bottles now. How ever I do collect soda can and cash them in for money.

When I was very much younger the soft drink companies gave a small amount for returned bottles. That was when they used glass. Now that they use plastic it seems they no longer want the bottles back because they no longer care. I've collected aluminium cans over a period of time but it took so long to collect lots and lots of cans for such a small return that I no longer bothered.

It is a good method because it can encourage people to do more recycle things. It is good for the environment. This is why I often collect our used paper, newspaper, magazines, bottles etc. and then sell it at last. But this money is little and you can depend on it to make a living.

Collecting bottles for money? Not yet. He he, but is it really worth if we collect bottles just for the money. It is another way to add up to our extra income. Anothe is selling used old stuff. That is what I know.

Back when I was little, we had collected also bottles for money together with my friends. Aside from money, what are more rewarding are the fun and the memories I could cherish forever with my friends. Now, the only idea I could make money were through online jobs. I am able to do the things I love through my online jobs. Additionally, I am learning with such jobs.
