As time goes on I run into various people that I enjoy sharing my life with and how intent they are at listening. Several people over the last few years have suggested I write a book. It is quite an interesting story about adoption and very out of the ordinary. To those of you who have written books or are in the process of doing so, do you have any suggestions where to start? Doubt I actually have the skills to write and would need help. I really believe the subject matter is very exciting. This wouldn't be a depressing, ordinary run of the mill book about adoption itself. Would have a good ending as well. Thanks in advance.

Well the first thing you need to do is to get your thought organized and make yourself an outline....that is like a map of your thoughts to take you from the beginning to the end of the story. You can even start by making a chapter headline and use that for the guide for the outline..if you don't you may skip around and lose people in the story.

Hi Carolbee. I would suggest first to start a private blog that only you have access to. It wouldn't be live on the net. In that blog you can collect all of your thoughts and sort of formulate an outline if what you want to say in your book. You can start building your story from the outline.
Stories can get sort of confusing to write. They have 7 senses. Your story should have all the senses we have, like taste, smell, touch, hearing, sight, and time and space. In other words, the reader should experience the book or story as though he or she were living it ir experiencing it. I'm not a story teller. I can't do it. I am an article writer, mainly a health writer in yahoo voices. Though, I did take a class in story writing, and that was enough to teach me to stay in a venue I enjoy. For me, it is a daunting task. I always write myself into a corner and I don't know how to get out of it. Yet I can write medical articles and health articles till the cows come home.

I like your idea of a blog. I took a two year writing course on children's stories and I do remember the 7 senses we had to infiltrate into the stories. These were for story telling persay. I loved the course but never did anything with it because I unfortunately got married...and divorced many years later.
Anyways, I think you're right about trying to get some sort of outline because there will be a million things she wants to write and when you start, you always think of something else. This is how you get into those corners. Notes should be taken on anything she would like to write about because once the flowing starts, it doesn't end for quite a while, if you know what I mean.

There are a lot of books on sale that give you step by step instructions on how to write a book. Also, you might want to ask Carmelnirel who is almost done writing a book herself. Or JillHill who has also written one. She actually gave me a copy of hers.

Hi Carolbee. I would put it all in writting and then get someone that undestands the language and get them to proof read it. I would do it if I could but don't understand things enough to write. I do as good as I can here on my lot but sure my English teacher wouldn't approve....LOL Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it and be happy that you have the skills. I have heard of people that published their books as ebooks and done very well. Wishing you all the luck in the world!

I have always wanted to write a book, however I do not believe that I am that gifted a writer to actually write one.
I would imagine that you will get much advice, advicing you to start blogs or write short ebook stories.
There is no right and wrong advice,
I would give you two pieces of advice...
Don't rush into writing a book until you confident you can do it.
Start by writing short articles, this will help you develop your style and "Voice"
It is always easier to write when you have a fluid voice

If you have the money, you could hire an editor t help you. If you are like me and don't have the money, then you need to sign up in writing groups, (I have some in both yahoo, Facebook, and I have a query agent site I use as well,) and learn everything you can.
Also, if you don't have the money, you may qualify for a grant, but the problem is, you would have to use the grant money for a degree. That is what I am doing and I have learned a lot about writing that way as well.
Also, when you are done writing, look into getting a Writer's Guide to Literary Agents, this will not only tell you what you need, (Like for a memoir, you will have to write a proposal,) and it also has a list of agents who are interested in books of your genre.
Of course you could also self-publish, but as one who has read quite a few self-published books, I strongly suggest you don't. Even if you had many people read your book before you publish, unless they know what a book like yours needs, there will be mistakes that you can't take back once it is marketed. Of course that is my opinion, but I am working on my synopsis now because I rather use an agent than to self-publish..
