Discussion goes Wayward !!!

Sometimes I see a discussion starts on a proper topic but after few responses it goes completely wayward.
I remember one of the discussion where one person argues over the topic and the other person ( not author ) opposes him and then the third person comes and joins them and then these three persons takes the discussion somewhere else which has nothing to do with the topic.
Have you experience this type of discussion ?

I love it when discussion goes like that because the discussion is so alive and it is so beautiful to listen with different minds. You can tell who broad and not . You can witnessed how people enjoyed their freedom of expression. People who discussed may agree or not at the end , is not so very important , the thing is they were able to express and share whatever they believed in.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well yes u are absolutely right, even i have observed the same thing in many discussions but at the end of the day, it is good to see how actively those discussions go ahead. Ha ha ha.
Even the same thing has happened with me but i have always taken it sportingly and it has also helped me to get into various matters starting from the topic that i had posted.
What say?

Yes in some cases the scene becomes funny and eventually the discussion comes alive but in several cases it goes beyond fun.

I do not think that this is a very common thing, but I agree that it does happen. There is nothing wrong with this in my opinion because as long as members have something to add then it is serving a purpose. The same happens in any conversation whether online or face to face, with the discussion gradually drifting to something quite diverse.

If it becomes a heated discussion and abusive comments are made then that would be unacceptable. This is intended as a social site for members to exchange views, so we certainly do not want any such behaviour. Fortunately it is also strictly against the guidelines here and would possibly result in the guilty person losing their membership.
Disagreeing is perfectly acceptable because we all have different opinions, but we should also be capable of disagreeing in a civil manner.

And what about when the commenters starts loosing cool over the argument with each other and some abuse takes place.

Hello intelinside you. What a nice username. :)
Yeah, I had been seeing that sometimes. The topic is something about a certain thing, there will be second and third responder that will mean the topic is out of hand or wayward just like you had said. Anyway,I feel that they are wasting their time responding through that. Isn't it myLot is being descriptive to what you have to say? I think that we will not earn too by commenting. We earn here by having quality and descriptive response. Someone told me that you earn a little more by being a second or third respnder to a respond of a person. I am not sure about that though.
Advance Happy New Year! I hope to see you more here in myLot and I hope you will like it here.

Thanks bluespygirl
I think some persons takes the comments too personally and start arguing over it and thats the way the whole scene creates.
I never heard about second and third responder earning more.
Happy New Year in advance to you as well
Keep smiling

Ohh, forget about what I had said on earning extra. It is just me and my friend who think about it and like what I had said, I am not sure about it.

LOL , I do read some discussions that have some replies by other people (not the author) and yes, they totally leap the subject matter away from what the discussion is all about.

Sometimes the information they shared is quite off resulting that they are talking with another subject matter and not the discussion post itself. Anywhow, we can’t blame them. It just goes to show that this site is really effective in terms of “discussing”.

In a way yes, and with a lot of people will go over the discussion and just participate on the comments rather than the discussion post as well. LOL.

Yes healthy argument between the two or three people can really make the discussion alive even if it is getting away from topic.

Hi!
It happens quite naturally and I have myself participated in that sort..
As per me, that's what it should be. I mean, if we go on responding and commenting stuffs about the same topic, it is obvious, the readers or the participants will get bored..
Commenting over previous comments and letting it go on even if the discussion goes wayward..that's what is called a 'discussion', isn't it?
That's how we do in family get together and on such occasions..

Yes you are right. But i like when when discussion turns into a debate or turns into some casual talk. It creates unity between people.

When wayward discussion results in personal attacks on each other, then its not normal. The discussion should be under rules , only then it will be healthy.

Over the course of time I have seen this happen from time to time. It makes it really interesting, and makes you wonder if they are on there just to post instead of paying attention to what the topic of that discussion was really supposed to be about, and maybe instead they should start their own discussion instead?

Hiya Intel.,
Yes they do do that but that can make the topic more interesting to and you will get more people joining in. For me it does not matter if they start going on about something else after all its about writing to each other in the end and participating as well.xxx

Hello lovinangels
Its good for discussion until they start going personal with one another. Sometime members go on a heated argument and start loosing their patience. If the argument is in a healthy way then definitely it proves good for the discussion.

I think some mylotter not read full discussion and start writing only on subject so this may be happened. Hehee...nice experience but still I not notice this type of discussion and I never argue on any topic.

That's nice of you that you don't argue. But argument is not bad as far as it remains under rules.

I think we all experience such type of discussions not only online, but also in real life, and sometimes such diversions from the original topic of conversation can render that discussion more interesting by enlarging its perspectives;of course,in many cases the discussion goes wayward indeed and has nothing to do with the original topic, but as long as people don't start to say crazy or silly things and the discussion has a certain level of interest I don't mind taking part in such a wayward conversation;after all, communication is in most cases preferable to silence, even when it becomes a little weird.

As a discussion starter it is duty of a author to ensure that the discussion should not deviate from the topic.

The actual problem starts when the argument between two persons commenting goes strong and they start taking it personally.

intelinsideyou yes and come o n we always rejoin the topic but we are having fun and the more who join in the better the discussion becomes as its not breaking any rules if we keep bringing back the topic as there are often facets to a discussion. As long as nobody
is breaking the rules and mylot admins itself does not delete the
discussion is considered a good discussion.Check the number of
responses as that tells if its a appealing discussion or a dud.

As long as the persons arguing are following rules then it is considered as good discussion otherwise there should be check.

It is up to the OP to bring the discussion back on track. When I post a topic I prefer it stays within its ambit and mostly it does as those who are experts in doing what you have described hardly participate in my discussion.

Yes the main thing is the author should not leave the discussion to auto-pilot.

I haven't experienced this in any of the topics that I have started, but I have seen it with other posters and I don't mind. I think is fun, after all a discussion can go many ways. You have something to say and other people have something totally different to say; I guess that's what make a real discussion. Not to mention, if people sidetracked, the original poster can bring them back to the topic.

Sometimes argument becomes too big for fun. At that time I think the author of discussion should intervene and try to cool things down.

I've seen it often and it makes the discussions fun. As long as the conversation doesn't degrade into name-calling, what difference does it make? The discussion starter started a great conversation that got people talking and the conversation grew. That's pretty much the way it works in real life. Don't you ever start talking about one thing just to find that the subject shifts focus so you end up talking about something else? I can easily see where several of the discussions I participated in today could go that way. It's rare that the discussion starter makes one comment. They often say several. One person might pick up on something that wasn't mentioned before. Or a comment is made on a comment that takes that part of the discussion somewhere else. This is what it's all about.

Even in real life sometimes a simple discussion leads to the dispute between two persons due to their different understanding of the topic.
