I am a huge horror fan (of the more thriller/suspense/horror variety not Gore) but I think it's really difficult to come across truly terrifying films. Often they are lame and predictable or gratuitously violent. So come on fellow horror fans, what are some good movie recs? =)

I love horror movies but I find that a lot of so-called horror movies are just an excuse to produce more gore and blood on the screen. I think these are cheap tricks to get people horrified. It's much more difficult to scare people psychologically because you will really need a good story line and plot. Slasher and torture movies are so easy to make.
I love horror movies that can scare me without showing me even one scene of gore or blood. And there are such movies albeit not that many. The ones that I've watched of this nature are Case 39, Sinister, The Awakening, Insidious, Orphan (a little bloody but not too gory), The Good Son (with McCauley Culkin), The Messengers (Kristen Stewart is in this horror movie before Twilight happened to her) and some others I can't remember.

Oh wow, thank you for this response! I completely agree with you that blood and gore are typically cheap tricks to scare people and a truly horrifying film would mess with the psyche which requires more talent and thought via a conceptual story line.
Because we seem to share the same values in terms of horror films, I'm going to bet I would enjoy your recs! I have seen hardly any of them except for: 'Insidious' and 'Orphan' so I will definitely check the others out! Thank you so much!!

Hello Jennlee and welcome to myLot. I haven't seen a good it on the edge of your seat and jump at some sudden movement for a very long time. I have given up on the thriller films. As you said the one made today are all show of blood and gore with little story line. I don't like those blood and gore films. Alfred Hitchcock was a good thriller producer with his film the birds so was Steven King whit Carry and the Shining. The Edger Allen Poe's works put into film were good thrillers too. Some times it's the directors and the actors. Vincent price was very good in the thrillers

Thanks for the welcome! I agree Hitchcock was an excellent horror/thriller guru. Psycho and Birds were both excellent. I had a small fear of birds for a few months after seeing that film, hah! I am a huge fan of Poe's writing but I haven't seen any of the film adaptations--maybe I will check them out! Thanks for the recs!

I have seen Insidious and I agree with you that it was very scary and successfully so (in my opinion) I really enjoyed it! I haven't seen Devil but I am a huge fan of M Night Shyamalan so I will check that out. Though I do feel M Night has a bit of trouble ending movies...Agree? Disagree? For example, The Village was pretty solid, I thought, not scary but a little creepy, interesting plot line, you really felt scared for the protagonist because she was blind... but then the ending just (in my opinion) sucked and it kinda killed the movie for me. Hopefully Devil has a solid ending. I will definitely check it out! Thanks :)

i have a very big collection of horror movies. you should watch PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. it is available in torrent. also RING also a good selection. try to watch it and let me know how do you feel.

I've seen both! My partner and I watched ALL the paranormal activities. I thought the first was the scariest. I thought it was cool how it relied on the 'realistic' vibe because creepy noises are definitely something every experiences in their own home and usually there is an explanation for it but you let your imagination get the best of you. So paranormal activity playing on that fear was a very solid idea. I liked the films but I thought they got a little redundant. And I love the Ring series too. Are those your favourites!? Any others? Thanks for your response!

I dont think that Paranormal Activity will make me scared but, Paranormal Activity 4 seems edited, we all know that all series of PA are all edited but, in PA 4, it's more edited, and we can even see how the edit works, and it didnt make me scared even if I put the volume up, I only got shock to some part that the girl is shouting, something like falls to the ground, to the fall, or any sounds like loud,

I like horror movies but I wouldn't say I'm a true horror fan. I don't watch them all the time. But, I agree. Horror movies seem to get more and more lame all the time. I don't know if I can offer any new suggestions but I will tell you what types of horror scare me the most. Still one of the scariest horror movies I've ever seen is THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. The way it was filmed, from a video camera perspective, adds to the realism. And the fact that you never really see anything...i.e., ghosts, evil killers.....but only hear noises and hear the frightened commentary of the characters narrating their video, really adds to the fear factor for me. It's the power of suggestion that gets the imagination going. That same type of filming format in the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY movies is what made them so scary to me. Of course in those movies you DO see things. But, because the things you see in those movies are of a supernatural, demonic nature, they are extremely frightening to me. The horror movies that scare me the most are the ones that have to do with the supernatural such as demons and demonic possession. Because I know that they are real. THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE was another movie I found pretty frightening.

Yeah, I totally agree with you that the realism aspect of paranormal activity is truly frightening because it plays on real fears we produce with our psyche. I have seen the Exorcist but not the Exorcism of Emily Rose. I heard mixed things but now that you're telling me to see it, I will definitely check it out. Thank you!

I love all types of horror films. There is one that I can suggest that you probably have not scene and it is a frightening film. Very good to watch late at night, around 3am...this film is called "The legend of Hell House". Very interesting! Love it, and the ending is kinda cool, unexpected, and that is always good. A horror film is only as good as it's ending. Also, feel free to go and listen to some good horror: www.themonsterclub.com. I suggest you go there and give that website a try, I've listened to most every one there.

In Horror film genres, I like watching a horror flick which has a psycho drama to it. It somehow connects horror and reality without putting much blood or violence on it.
I also like watching independent horror film since the story line is much made by cultural influences, urban legends, colloquial myths and wizardry.
I can’t decide which horror movie is good because I have a lot in mind, but you can check imbd.com it’s a movie site that has reviews written by movie critics, they also have some movie listings that are newly made.
