This game is not a game if you don't connect to a Local Area Network of players that rule the stage. You need to do it in order to enjoy this game fully. Find some worthy "warriors" that are mad and fanatic about this game. That was my experience in the early 2000's when I was just a teenager, going to local internet-cafes (because I bought my own computer closer to 2004) with friends and competing at the highest-possible level. Quake was gruesome, bloody, awesome. Good memories. Although you might want to limit some options (like bloodshed) for your kids. And, by the way, this is a yesterday game. I am not sure anyone would play it today.

Actually it's played a lot today. In 2010 id Software released the improved version of Quake 3 called "Quake Live". It's same old Q3 but with some minor changes like user interface, more balanced weapon damage, some graphical enhancement (bloom, widescreen support), better netcode, integrated anticheat etc. Blood and gore was also removed. The game is played through internet browser but don't let it fool you, it's no flash. It runs on id tech 3 engine (same as Q3) and when you hit fullscreen, it's the real Quake experience. It being a browser game has some social advantages like creating friend list, seeing player's profile, chat etc. The game is free to play but if you want access to all arenas and ability to start your own server (public or private) you have to buy subscription. The game gets updated every few months with new content like new arenas and sometimes even new game modes. There's also a ladder site that tracks statistics of all players: http://qlranks.com/ You can filter players by game modes, by country etc. The Quake scene is still going strong, there are daily online tournaments when you can earn money and there are still a few big LANs a year where you can compete for some serious prize money. Here's video of such LAN event: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4wJj0qIky0 So if you liked Quake 3 in the past, why not give it a shot again. You just have to go to www.quakelive.com, create account for free and you're ready to play.

*sigh* If only I had time for all that... :D It's lovely to hear that it's still popular. However, nowadays, as I have grown a little, it seems that I am more inclined towards strategies and some magic stuff. Not sure if magic relates to me being an adult, but these are my current game-interests. Yes, and detective-games, mysteries - those are always fun, too.

As I've grown I don't have much time to play games so I only play Quake in multiplayer even tho from time to time I do enjoy some game with a really good story. Quake is more of a sport to me than a game if that makes any sense. You can play it for years and still find new ways to play and room for improvement, it has such depth to it.
