Some Things to Consider While Watching This Movie

It is an amazing and very sentimental movie. Cried while I was watching it. The final battle scene is hard to watch. Still, no one should go away so much from reality when they're making a movie.
Historical truth:
There was a rebellion of the Samurais in Japan. However, the Japanese government, while trying to oppress them, used the French forces' help in instructing their soldiers on how to use guns, not American ones. Hence, the whole story about American aid and an American soldier taking the side of the Samurais is a complete fiction. However, splendid one.
So, watch this movie, enjoy it, but, please, don't take it so closely to your heart as it is NOT an accurate portrayal of a historical occurrence.

All you have to do really is just research, but for most of us we don't really bother doing this. And it is an Americal film so of course it had to be America and of course they don't follow historical events very well
