Would you yell at them?

Now most of us are new at work, they never trained us properly. They basically said you will learn it as you go.
I get a lady (regular customers), very nie lady. Come up bought about $80.00 worth of food, and supplies. She had 2 gifts cards $50.00 and $20.00.
Well I stood there as I was by myself, going ah crap. I was never taught how to process gift cards. So I apologized, and got the manual out, and walked myself through it.
The machine kept freezing, and then one it processed it wouldnt take her card so I had to call the compny to reboot the system.
After about 10 minutes it went through and she was fine, and said don't worry if you have a problem just let me know I am always in.
I guess she could see I was ready to pull my hair out, we can't have our till off. The lady behind her was a real biatch, she huffing and puffing by then, even after apologizing the lady I was serving even said something.
She kept making comments, I just ignored her, and rang her through. She then as she walked away said how she is going to complain to the owners. I just rolled my eyes, and called the manager (seeing as I am running a store by myself and I have only been there for 4 months).

Customers can be ugly. I wouldn't have a job dealing with the public all the time. I'm not a people person at all. When I worked in a nursing home there were a couple of family members that were always hard to satisfy.

Unfortunately, you will always have people that focus on their problems and aren't concerned about yours. There is absolutely nothing you can do to make someone happy if they've already convinced themselves to be unhappy. I think the best you can do is handle it professionally as you did. Apologize and move on.

Yes, like others have said, life is like that. And the managers there should have made sure and taught you how to ring these up especially if you were there working by yourself. And to think you were able to keep calm and try to do it yourself, does show a lot of respect. These other people need to remember that life can wait, and they need to show some respect. I am not sure I would have been able to handle it as well as you.

Next time you will certainly know what you are doing. I know it was very frustrating. I would say that the second customer just plainly has no class at all, and no sympathy either. She must not have been too inconvenienced as she stayed and made her purchase.

Life is like that! But I like the way you handle it professionally.
If it was me, I believe I will get quite nervous. Especially if there
are others in the queue waiting impatiently to pay. Keep it up and I
believe you will learn fast and be able to run the the store smoothly.

The customer does not know your situation. Yelling at the them wouldn't help of course. It was good that you just kept quiet because customers are really mean and nasty when they feel that they are not given good service. In your case, it was your being new on the job that took you a long time to process what they were buying.

Ahhh. Isn't modern technology fun?
What did the owners say when you called them?

Ive had this very thing happen to me before. You handled it well. Yelling would have been pointless and would have lost you a customer along with everyone else she blabbed to about how she was treated. Sometimes you have to suck it up and just deal with impatient, nasty people. Glitches happen and everyone should allow for time and patience to deal with these snafus but rarely do they!

Well atleast the lady you were waiting on was patient with you and understood what you were going thru. As for the lady behind her I can't stand people like that, what did your manger ever say about it? Hopefully you'll have a better shift next time.

I think in the USA you wouldn't be able to do that. You would have to be a key carrier and making what the key carrier's made. I was left alone in a store for an hour once, the key carrier left to the bank and to get herself some food. I hated it as if i needed an over-ride or something I was SOL.
Some people can be rude.
