I am in a very difficult situation. Our neighbors left to visit their parents now for almost one full week. Their two dogs are wondering around hungry. My son had share our dogs' food the first two days with these dogs and gives them water every day. I am so angry and have send the neighbors two sms's telling them to get home to attend to their hungry dogs. I told them that I will report them if they do not come back to feed them. The have ignored my sms's.

How irresponsible and heartless are they. I hope you won't get tired feeding them. The poor dogs must be hungry and thirsty all the time. I hope the owners will go home soon. But what if they don't come back? Those poor dogs need help and I am glad that you are one kind neighbor.

OMG please report them straight away, you gave them a chance to respond and they are not. If you have stopped feeding them then they are suffering. Call the authorities to have them taken to a kennel where they will be properly looked after. Stuff what the neighbours think about this they should not have these dogs in their care and should be fined for negligence. If you don't do it what's to stop them from doing it again and maybe next time their pets won't be so lucky

This must be excessively distressing for you but please don't blame the animals. No matter what the owners are like these poor doggies still need food and water and I think it has become your responsibility.
You cannot wait "till next time" to report this matter. The situation needs to be reported now so the dogs can be rescued. I'm not surprised if one of the dogs has become aggressive, I'm sure it's natural if you are starving and neglected.
Please continue to do the right thing and get this matter reported to the authorities now!

i tend to feed our dog first before myself, even if i'm so hungry and tired i don't know what to do first. my reasoning is he can't feed himself. he can't go out and hunt for it. he can't buy or cook it either. he has no choice so it's unfair to him.
it's the same way with children. it's not their fault so why deprive them or punish them?

How can they do that ? They didn't think a little bit before going to vacation that who will feed these dogs in their absence.
Its so nice of you and your son that you helped these poor dogs with food and water.
I hope your neighbours will come back soon after reading your sms.
I don't understand why some people keep pets when they cant take care of them.

If you are certain they have no food, then you might call the humane society. Maybe the dogs are just being picky about what they eat. The other option is to throw some food over the fence and then kindly ask the neighbors to reimburse the expense.
No use getting in a fight with the neighbors - that will not solve anything.

They really had no food - I have checked. Their water buckets were empty the next morning and my son had to attend to it. I do not want to fight with the neighbor, just have a serious talk with them and tell them that I will report them if it ever happens again.

Hi dee777, don't be hesitated to report them if they still ignore you without replying. The situation would be totally different if they reply you instantly and ask you friendly to do them a favor to take care of the dogs. And will pay back you the sum buying dog food. If so certainly you will be more than willing to do so without any complain I believe, for I can see how kind you are to feed the dogs for the past couple days voluntary
Happy New Year

Wow they sound like really irrisponsible pet owners to go away like that and leave their pets without food and water and someone to look after them. Anytime my parents or I have gone away we make sure the other one looks after each others animals and usually if my parents go away they are only gone for a night or two. They make sure to leave me lots of food to feed them and for me to check their water etc.

There is nothing you can do if they don't come back. Maybe you could tell them if you can take care of their dogs until they come back, and they should pay you some compensation for your time and money, see if they willing to do so. I am sorry that you have to involve in such situation. They should consider such issue before they gone on a trip to somewhere.

Do you know if your neighbors were planning to be gone for so long? It's so strange that they wouldn't make arrangements for someone to come give their dogs food and water. Maybe they did and the person who's supposed to be caring for them isn't.
I would be worried if they didn't respond to my texts. I hope nothing happened to them while they were traveling. I don't know if they are normally responsible owners, but I don't think anybody who really cares about their pets would be able to let them go hungry like that.
Is there some way you could contact the authorities and have them do a welfare check or something like that?

I have had neighbours like that. They had a lot of agressive dogs, attacking each other as well. Started with each new dog into the house, it ended up in the garden as soon as the next dog came. The whole garden/area was terribly smelling after dogshit. One summer they been gone for weeks. At midnight someone came over to throw some dogfood (at least I assume it was dogfood) over the wall. Fighting dogs each night (or every other night). I did not complain at that moment since I found it hard to do so. Later on I left messages but no reply. At a certain point they were suddenly left, so were the dogs. I think someone did complain because she was once at my door asking me if I called (police or animal rescue or so). I said I did not since I would first try to talk to them or leave a message if something is bothering me. I think if you have the phonenumber of your neighbours you somehow are closer as I was with my neighbours. Perhaps something has happend to them? You could try once to call them with an other phone number, if nobody is answering I would let someone come over to have a look at the dogs. Since I think it will be an emergency case, esp. is nobody else is comming over to take care of them.

If you warned your neighbor and they don't respond, then the only left to do is to report them. I would see if the animal shelter can pick up the dogs. Your neighbor's dogs are not your responsibility. This is not a difficult situation, just call the authorities.
You told your neighbor that you would report them, now all you need to do is follow through with your report.
What else is there to do?

If the neighbors were going out, they could have informed someone to take care of their dogs or they could have asked the neighbors around to take care of their dogs. This is called cruelty to animals. Sometimes i too see pet dogs which are just walking on the roads without any owner. I feel very sad for them.
If people bring up pets, they should keep them as their friends till their life span ends and not because the pets are small, they are looking cute and when the pets become big they abandon them.

Thank you vicky30. That is exactly why I was so angry. it is not accepted that people can get themselves 'life-stock', so to say, and then wonder off... It is like putting a baby in a cot all alone and go shopping... I am so glad it is now all behind me.

hi dee they are really breaking the law so find your local society
for Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals and tell them about your neighbors and they should send someone to investigate.
Then they will try to find the owners and probably fine them or worse.
' That is appalling that they left those dogs without someone to come and feed them and water them daily til they return.,

Wow that is so sad that these people have left their dogs that long without food. What where they thinking to even leave them alone that long. Thanks to you they were able to eat and you gave them your dogs food. I would have reported them already after they didn't respond to your text. So sad for those dogs. If they return, I'd be talking to them as well and informing them that they owe me some money for feeding their dogs while they were away. That is so irresponsible though, they could have at least have someone come along to feed their dogs for them while they were away. Or just not have left them alone that long. Poor dogs I hope either they return soon or someone comes by and takes those people's dogs away.

It was a nice gesture of your sun that he fed the poor dogs and gave them water. Didn't their owners at least let them a sufficient water supply? How could they be so cruel? What would they have thinking about? The dogs had to live with air?
I would have called the local animal police if I were you.

Thanx Octav1. I have send them 2 text messages and put down a deadline. I told them that I would report them and phone the spca. They came back just in time and apologized. I still do not understand why they acted the way they did. But they know where they stand with us in terms of their pets and I trust this will never happen again.

Your neighbor has a responsibility to talk with you to look for their dog just for a week but they did not do it. Yeah, you have the right to get mad about it. If the dog food is quite expensive then it will be a burden for you of course. I felt pity with the dog.

Thank you kokomo. They overlook their responsibility conveniently. My entire family was worried and concerned for the dogs. we could unfortunately only feed them once a day. When the neighbors arrived, we had a very good chat and I am sure that this will not happen again.

You have been helping already a week? And you have sent 2 text messages? And warned that you would turn them in? And no response? If you are feeling kind, I would send one more text message saying you will report them tomorrow by noon unless you hear from them as to the date they will return. That is absolutely ridiculous. Unacceptable. Sounds to me like they know you're kind and responsible and they're counting on you, or some other neighbor, to take care of their animals while they're gone. And they're so sure of the neighbors that they're confident nobody will turn them in. They are uncaring. About their dogs. About the neighbors. If one of the dogs bites someone because it's out of the yard and hungry - that's what dogs do - it's the dog that pays the ultimate price. The dog will be put down. Please report them as soon as possible. You may save the lives of the dogs by doing so as well as the health of your neighbors.

I'm glad you already did. Those poor animals must have really suffered tonight with the loud celebrations. It makes me so, so, SO angry when people are so inconsiderate and evil. It takes a special person - and not a good special - to treat animals like this. It's heartless. I'm glad you're willing to take care of this situation. They're very lucky dogs to have you around.

My last text message said that the cut-off time for them to response was 12h on 1 Jan 2013 before I would report them. It's going to be interesting to hear what they would have to say for themselves. I am kind towards the pets, and will have a serious talk with the neighbor, dont you worry!
