Problem in dog foods

I have a problem here about my dog, a Labrador, who won't eat dog foods. We thought that he will eventually like/get use to it if we keep on force feeding him some dog food but months have passed, he never liked it. We tried different kinds of dog food but still he wont eat. We fed him with bread instead but it's too expensive for daily consumption. Does anyone have the same situation like mine? Can you suggest a way that he will finally eat dog foods?

My dog is a toy poodle and at first she likes dog food. Dog food is more expensive than rice. Here in the Philippines we ate rice instead of bread during our meal. I tried to give her some rice and she liked it, until now she loves to eat rice with meat sometimes and she doesn't eat the dog food we bought. I am glad because buying her dog food would cost us a lot of money. Just try anything that your dog likes and mix it with some dog food. I did that for some times and it works for her. :)

You may be right about that, dog food is more expensive than rice, but I think you mean the leftovers from your meal? For me I would prefer that way, you can save a lot when your dog learns to eat leftovers. Sadly my dog is too picky in foods.

No, we don't feed her leftovers. Every time we are having our meal, she has her own meal too, so its like we are having our meal together. We mixed it with dog food so she can eat all of them.

Hello Sureoi and welcome to myLot!
The first thing you must do is to check your dog's health. Go visit the vet and see if everything is OK with your lab. Some dog refuse food because they have a problem with their digestive. If his health is strong, you can start teaching him to eat whatever you like.
The secret is not to give him anything to eat until he eats dog food.
I hope you already have a regular schedule for his feeding. If not, you must know an adult dog should eat one or two times a day, at the same hour every day.
Let's say you decide to feed him two times a day.
In the morning, after the morning walk, fill the food bowl with dog food and put it in front of your dog. He will probably refuse to eat. Let the bowl in front of him for ten minutes. No matter if he eats or not, after ten minutes remove it.
Don't give him anything else to eat until the next meal time, which is in the evening.
Again, fill the bowl with dog food, give it to your dog. Let the food at his disposal for ten minutes. If he doesn't eat, remove it after ten minutes.
Repeat this until he starts to eat.
Remember: nothing else to eat in between!
Everybody in the house must follow this new schedule. Make sure nobody feeds him in secret with anything else.
You must know it won't hurt a healthy dog if he doesn't eat for two or three days. So be more stubborn than he is, and don't give up!
I wish you good luck!

I thought the same many years ago. My first dog was a picky eater, too. She wouldn't have eaten anything without meat. That happened until an old lady taught me what I told you above.
It was pretty hard for me to see her starving, but she started to eat the second day, and we didn't have problem since. She was like that: she used to eat the breakfast, then, in the evening, she used to start crying to let us know she's not hungry. The next day she ate both breakfast and dinner, but the following day she started all over: only the breakfast was enough for that day.
It won't heart your dog if he starves for two or three days. Think of his ancestors, the wolves: they rarely eat two days in a row, and they live healthy for centuries.

Thank you my friend for a wonderful suggestion. I 'll definitely try that in fact we've tried that before but our mistake was we fed him immediately with another meal when he refuse the dog food. We could not stand being hard on our dog. Is that really true that a dog won't get hurt even if he doesn't eat for two or three days? I thought dog's eating routine/health are like humans, if you skip a day without eating you'll get sick or hurt.

Here it is cheaper to feed a dog with bread than with dog food. But it isn't healthy for a dog to eat only bread. Dogs are carnivores and they need more proteins in their diet.
My friend's used to have a dog like yours. She didn't like to eat dog food at all. One day my friend met an old lady that told her to stop pampering the dog, so she let her starve for two days until she started to eat dogs food. Have you tried to let her starve?

First of all, if you want your dog to eat dog food, stop feeding him bread. Doing this not only encourages him to eat bread and discourages him from eating his dog food. Secondly, stop force feeding your dog. From what I've seen (first hand) it only makes them dislike the food they're being fed and does not encourage them to eat it on their own. Last but not least, stop switching dog foods. If you haven't done so already, get a good brand dog food such as Fromm, Orijen, etc and stick with it. If you can, leave a bowl of it out so he can eat it whenever he wants...at least for now. And remember, no giving him bread (or any other "treats" that keep him from eating his dog food for that matter)...no matter how tempting it may be. Mixing some canned dog food with his meal is okay, although I wouldn't really recommend it. Fresh fruits or vegetables would be a better choice to mix in there...so long as it's safe for dogs to eat. By the way, don't expect too much at first. This is all new to him, so be sure to give him time to adjust. If you resist the urge to give in to him your dog should be eating his food in no time at all.
I hope this helps.
Happy mylotting!

Try mixing the dog food with the food he likes. You can do this in small dosage first, then gradually increase. I am sure he likes liver. So you are going to mix dog food with chopped liver. I am sure eventually the lab will learn to eat dog food.

Our princess has to have high protein food and we put gravy, meat drippings, or soft dog food mixed with it. She will scarf it down then. She has to be really hungry to eat it without something being mixed with it.

have you tried mixing wet dog food with dry dog food? buy a more expensive brand food? my dog would not eat any other brand other then pedigree. try asking at pet stores or your vet for samples of other brands. if that doesnt work try a raw diet or cook up some meat, veggies and rice etc
