Every week we have a test and most of the test are hard. The teachers use to say that it wouldnt count but now it does. My report card is good except my math course. I know how to do the math just like i know how to do the other subjects but just harder without multiple choice.

I've always liked doing the multiple choice questions because you have a 50% chance of getting the right answer when you don't know the answer or spot the incorrect answer right away. Multiple choice is always better for me. I was never good in math, but I was lucky to have a good geometry teacher that always gave us a multiple choice test.

I think AdalieM did not mean 50% as in literally 50% (2 of 4 or 1 of 2)... It's just that we have a better chance of getting a correct answer if choices are laid out. Using Sherlock Holmes deduction method or something to that effect. We take out the answers we know are not the right ones and just choose from the remaining ones which we think sounds IT. Hehe..

I am not a fan of multiple choice questions. They are easy point eaters. Especially in math, they create this pick the right answer or die situation. Writing or solving the problem on a paper is much easier. Even if our answer is not correct we can get points just for showing the steps of how we did the problem. I score better in writing exams. I guess it just allows me to prove my understanding of the subject better. Multiple choice questions get worse in universities. One small line from the book turns into a big question. If we skip that line we would have to play the guessing game on the exam and I hate that so much!

Well, from your question I was able only have little information.
What I have realized is that to you math is tricky (I also say, because for me, it's the same thing).
However, I see you are new here on Mylot. I do not know how old you are and especially what school you frequent.
In all the ways that I believe in testing, multiple responses, are helping a lot.
Good luck for your next exams!

If you studies the material, why would it matter if you have to write the answer or just choose one?? May be you need to study some more there. Good luck in school....

Yes, It is more difficult if the tests do not have multiple choice category especially in Math subject because it is not my cup of tea. Mathematics sucks!! When I was a student,Math exams with multiple choice meant, I did not have to do calculations. Why? Because I only guessed the answers lols. If the lady luck was on my side then I would get the correct answers hahaha.
However, sometimes, tests with multiple choice is more confusing in vocabulary test. When I became a teacher, I avoided putting multiple choice category in exams so I would know if my students learned anything from me.

Of course every student love multiple choice in every examination. But most often, students critical thinking aren't boosted by multiple choice questioning. Teachers need to make their students learning output well done and usually Mathematics are all about problem solving and students must show their solution on every problem and not to be based on instinct...

I agree. Multiple choice tests can be hard too it's nice to know that the answer is right in front of us. Of course, then some teachers get tricky with multiple choice tests and say that there can be more than one right answer or one of the answers can be "None of the above." Still doesn't change the fact that it's my favorite type of test though.

I agree with anshu23 that there should be more options available to students in schools. Unfortunately, because we don't have the money and resources to address the individual needs of every child, this doesn't happen, but it's a shame! Many students are very smart and capable but are just not good at the method of testing or don't respond well to a certain teaching method but this by no means indicate their intelligence level. And then, if they fail often or don't do well, their self esteem can plummet and then it can discourage them from trying at all! It's truly disheartening that we don't have more options available to students to demonstrate they know the material taught in the class because each student is unique and learns differently and I think they should be able to demonstrate their understanding in a way that makes sense for them.

This is a problem with many of us.There should be multiple choice questions on every paper not just maths. In this way you can have sharp skills and can score good at the same point. So I think there should be more such option in schools.
