I watch 2 reality tv programs about Pitbulls. One is Pit Boss and the other Pitbull and Parolees. They both save pitbulls from bad situations and try to find homes for them. I've only known one Pitbull in my life and he was the most adorable, friendly dog. They had him from a pup until he died of old age. He wasn't aggresive at all and I think that if they are brought up right they can be good family pets. I truly believe that if their left outside nobody is going to try to rob that house because everyone is so afraid of them and they are very intimidating if you don't know them. What are your thoughts on Pitbulls? Does anyone have one and what are your experiences with them?

Bad dogs are few and far between. Bad owners are a lot more common.
99% of dogs just do what they're trained to do. There's always a 1% who aren't "right in the head", of course, like any animal, but pit bulls can be the softest, cuddliest, wimpiest dogs around if they're trained to be like that.

Pitbulls are banned here, you cannot have a pure bred pitbull as of a few years ago. If you do the dog will be removed and you will be fined. But I completely agree, it's like any dog, it's not necessarily the breed, but the dog personality, and how it is raised.

I know they are banned here in many provinces in Canada. It comes back tot he owners being stupid or uneducated. Sadly, many don't see that and blame the dogs such as some in this discussion to begin with when I read it. I guess those who don't have experience with the breed, will only believe what the news says.

You hear of so much bad press about pitbulls, mainly because of the attacks on children and how fierce and aggressive they can be, that all pitbulls are tarred with the same brush, but it's like any animal, if you teach it properly, give it love and care it will behave, and will be safe to have around children. It's the owners who instil the aggression in these types of dogs and do not know how to handle them properly.

I definately blame the owners. I have seen so many people walking their dogs and beeing mean even when their walking them. So many times I've wanted to say somethin to someone who isn't treating their dog right but have to keep my mouth shut because you can't always trust some of these people. If their going to be mean to a dog what would they do to me?

After we lost our Dalmatia we decided on going for a smaller breed as handling our Dalmatian was difficult specially during his last years as we had to lift him around. We settled down for a bull terrier. In the initial period it was very difficult to control our dog but by and by he became the most wanted pet around. I could write a book on his attitude towards guests, towards home people and towards other animals around not necessarily our own. He was so domesticated that he had to be hand fed till his last days. He contributed greatly to our happiness.
It depends on how one trains a bull terrier although it is a fact they can turn ferocious if not handled with care.
In the image here he is playing with pups from a dog we had adopted - a stray dog really!

that rap was really not good and it made me feel bad and that was really not upto the mark and i am afraid they certainly need to work on more intimation rather than overlap records

I have been around many pitbulls and your right it is how they are raised. Not all of them are aggressive, they are only that way if that is how their trained to be... I think it's unfair for people to automatically think they are such bad dogs because they really aren't... Any dog from any breed can be taught to be mean if that is how their trained!
We have a Rottweiler and people think the same thing about them... Honestly, she is the sweetest dog I have ever had in my life! She is sweeter than my lab was. She's so good with my kids, they can do anything to her and she kisses them. She is super affectionate too.
It is all how their trained in my opinion...

No thanks, I'll pass. I understand what you're saying and of course, not all Pitbulls are bad. But the statistics show that 70% of all attacks on people are from Pitbulls, with Rottweiler's next in line.
It does all come down to the breeding of these dogs and unfortunately, you don't know this unless you buy from a breeder of many years. Good breeders will not breed aggressive dogs. That's not so true for everyone else. They have their other reasons for breeding aggressive dogs. So many use them for protection so they want them vicious. Then they get pregnant, and there are more aggressive dogs that look like cute sweet little puppies, which they are. But then they grow up with that aggressiveness inside of them and you just don't know when it's going to strike. This is just my opinion.
Until people stop breeding them to be aggressive, their reputation will just keep getting worse. THAT is the SAD part.

i agree.. not all are bad and mean. But people have made many of them that way. I think thats why they get that bad rap. I know my brothers best friend has one. Shes 7 and is a big baby.

i think you are right their is alot of poeple out there that use them for all the wrong reasons which in turn sets a bad name for the dog and the dogs have to pay for it. you can make a dog fright and then expect it to know how to be a family pet. also alot of people dont understand the breed and dont know how to train them. i have know many pitbulls and never see them have a problem. i really like the breed. Where i live they have just lifted the band on pitbulls they are nolonger considered a resreced breed which is a win for the breed in alberta canada.

I think they do get a bad rap. I have a rescue pitty and he is sweet and has never been aggressive toward any person. That said, it did take a lot of training and socialization to keep him from being dog-aggressive once he hit a year or so old. My fault - I had him and another intact male dog living in the house together. Once both were neutered and I went to additional training classes with them, they are great together again and I can take him to the dog park with no problems.
I think pit bulls can be excellent dogs, but people do need to be cautious with them and any other large or powerful breed, and realize that many were bred to be aggressive to other dogs. The owners need to take time to train them and keep them under control, especially around other dogs, small animals, and children or people who are not used to dogs. I also think that they are not the type of dog that should be left out in a yard alone or chained - I disagree with that life for any dog, but especially for a breed that already has a bad rap and is a target for dog fighters and thieves.
