Nowadays, almost everyone has got an cellphone and a computer at home. It's a part of our personal life. At work it's not different. All companies work already with PC's and cellphones. Many persons can't imagine life without technologie anymore. They are allready talking about addiction. Do you consider technologie as a SOCIAL DISEASE? What are their symptomes? Here I offer one: - we consider technologie more important than anything else in our life forgetting other important subjects. What do you think about it? Do you agree or disagree? Why?

I really believe it could become an addiction. I wouldn't call it a social disease but do find it offensive at times. We can go out to eat dinner and my husband will text the entire time and totally ignore anything I say. This is where it becomes offensive. In the work place, if it's a part of the job, it's fine. My cell phone is so old, something I like, that I can't get or send out text messages. Can only receive calls or make calls. I do like to be able to keep in touch with our adult children at all times and make myself available. This is my primary use for my cell. Computers can be addictive as well and I see nothing wrong with adults being on their computer whenever they like. It's a great form of entertainment.

My husband's cell phone will never leave his pocket. He is so addicted to it that even when we eat dinner at home it sits right beside him while we eat. Sometimes it causes disagreements. Hard to compete with a cell....lol

The nice point of a cell phone which also was the reason for buying my first one is that we can talk to our family or friends at any time and wherever we are. It's nice to listen to a person when you need even if you can't see her or him at the moment. Compared with this, messages are quiet unpersonal. You are right, it's really offensive when you want to maintain a conversation with someone and this person is busy with the mobile all the time. In that case, maybe I would try to organize a dinner without cellphones! Thanks for sharing.

I think indeed we are addicted - well at least I am. I have now found a game that I'm addicted to over my smartphone. I have been playing it all weekend. But I don't think it's all bad, because I am still able to do things that I need to do. But yeah, I have been playing at it. But it doesn't stop me from being social. It's most especially helpful because it has been raining here the whole day. Have a great mylot experience ahead!

Oh, I know how you feel. I was a chatter too. But yeah, perhaps we just out-grow these things and focus now to something important and productive. But of course, there are times when I just let go of myself and play just to relax.

That's that point, that we have to be able to control our time online and what we use it for. It seems like many people don't have this control. In my case, I never used it for playing games, but some years ago, when I wasn't at work, I used my time to chat a lot with people from all over the world and I was addicted to it. Now, I only use it do research/online learning, online banking and buying online to save time and money.

Not really addicted, but they have become part of our life, basic necessity like freezes, washing machines, tv etc which were considered as luxury earlier; say 30 years ago. Not disease too

Of course not, who would spend a whole day with a washing mashine!? Maybe with a fridgen, I still could imagine it. Beside that, if you know to handle it not to spend the time on your cellphone but manage it well for important things, your are right. It's a part of our life and important too. The point is that many people nowadays use the day only to stay online through the mobile on social sites. Otherwise, they think to be missing something important. So they forget the really important things and have no personality as they depend of the news others only.

I think it depends on the person. I kind of got addicted to it, but I'm fighting it. Maybe it was because I didn't have too many friends, and it was an easy pastime, because on the Internet, I could find anything that interested me, from fashion to fun and funny stuff. Now I use the Internet a bit less, as I have a boyfriend, and I now try cutting back on it as well even when I'm alone, to for example read more, because I like reading, but kind of abandoned it because of the net.

It's really easy to spend plenty of time online. Several years ago, my life was between my work and internet. I spent almost all my free time online and I didn't realize where the time went. But with the time, I learnt to control its use. We have to be conscious for what we really need it.

All the people around me are all like this, I think the advanced technology is indeed people fall a lot. Maybe people are learned to enjoy, learned to lazy, because the new technology does give people lazy caused the convenience.

For me, i think i can live a good life without computer, but i need a cellphone to contact others. If you addict to them, it is a kind of social disease, we should try to overcome it.

The point is if we are able to control our phone calls and our time on the cell phone. Do we give it a great usage or are we wasting our time and money on it? Do we use it only for important calls, or to depend on the life others, what they do in each moment and what they post on internet? If we know how to deal with it, it's ok.

I agree people are just becoming too into computers nowadays. It used to just be some machine you could do office work on and that's it but now it's like everyone's best friend, people just can't stop using them. What's worse is that kids mirror their parents and grow up spending time with computers, not their real life friends.

You are right, as a kid, I enjoyed playing outside with my friends running around all day, sometimes with bycicle and it didn't matter if it was raining or snowing. And we were lucky. We grew up in a world without technology and were happy. Now, the childrens rest at home infront of their cellphone or computer chatting all day or viewing what's new around instead of going out to enjoy.

I think cellphone and computer is an basic need in our life,Improvement in technology should always be welcome by the people,Now a days an updated mobile has decreased the work of computer,People use cell phone for sending mails,Facebook etc..It is really healthy and should be used by people. Computer is also an important think in our today's world. Most of the companies are using computer for their work,Social websites are very entertaining for the people, We should not spend our whole time in front of computer or with mobiles at the same time we should see them as unwanted think.Thanks.

I agree with you in the point that computer and phones are important for work, save many time since we can write on PC, send emails, print, achieve in folders, it's easier to find any document and saves space and papers... But, I wouldn't consider it as an basic need. Before the techonological era, people also worked well and maybe were healthier than people nowadays. Even so, as you well said we should not spend our whole time with those items.

I feel that there are a lot of people addicted to far worse things in life.I do think that there are a lot of people that tend to sit chatting on their phones that chatting to people that they are sitting with. I also feel that there are lots of rude people out there that tend to go and see a friend and will sit texting or looking and chatting to people on social sites like face book, just in case they miss out on any thing that people are getting up to.

That's right, nowadays many people rather prefer to talk to someone through a machine like a PC or a cellphone instead of having the person in front of oneself. It's like a kind to hide ourselfs behind a mask. As a result, we may loose perception of the reality.

I have been using it for years and as you said i am totally going gaga about it and cant stay away from it,its more like natural addiction
• Germany

When I go out without my cell phone, I feel like if I am missing something. But, do you really consider this addiction natural? The only sense I give to the cell phone is to be contactable for my family in case there's any problem or someone needs something. The second important point of course is to stay in touch with my friends, but I don't spend the whole day calling posting.

In the case of cell phones, personally I never could understand why people become addicted to. But, my nieces are also addicted to it. Already early in the morning when they get awake, the first thing they do is taking their mobile to get into a social web to check up what's new. So I wondered what could be new around after seven or eight hours of sleep? Anyway, it seems to be usual between young people.

I don't know it's a disease or not but I can definitely tell that I'm addicted to it.But that does not mean that I give technology more importance than my social life...

Technology definitely has it's benefits, but is indeed an addiction. It seems like a lot of people miss out on what is going on around them because they constantly need to check their phones or other devices. Nothing annoys me more than when I see people hanging out together, but they are all on their phones. Let's not forget about driving and texting or talking on the phone. If people can't wait until they are out of the car then it's definitely an addiction. Another point is the work aspect. For some the work day never ends because people can always stay connected. Work and personal life are blurred. This goes for family time, nights, weekends and even vacation

That's right, it's pity to see whole families (parents and children) together but everyone on their own computer or cellphone online searching or chatting living parallel lifes. We changed the verbal communication with our family for the online communication with our friends.

Computers are very helpfull for companies to realize work, it's faster, saves time and place. Personally, I would not talk about addiction if it's for work only. The problem starts when you go home after work and continue connect on your computer.

Addiction? I'm avoiding to be one of them. We must use technologies in more purposive way. They give us lot of new interesting way of making our everyday life more easy. This social disease may occur if we don't guide or teach people how to use them right. This is common among young age. Addicted to computer games.

That's right, the right usage should be teached to the users. But, I presume that there's still no guidline talking about this part. Maybe it will appear in the future as a new signature in schools.

Now many young people spend their free time on the net by computer, ipad or cellphone. While many old people think they should use their free time to learn something or do a part-time job. But to me, I thinkk the net is also a good place to learn new knowledge, watching Online course is a good way to get educatrion. But my parents do not agree with me. I think they are too old to accpeted new things and they can not adapt themselves to the new world.

The problem is that there are two very different generations living together. When our parents were young, they didn't knew and didn't need any computer or internet. They resolved their lifes on another way, so they don't understand why we actually need the internet to learn or to study when they went to school, why we have to read ebooks when they went to the libraries, why we have to look for a job online sending our CV by email when they wrote their ones by hand and sent them per post, why we buy online when they go to the stores...When I got my first computer with internet connection my father also asked what I need it for.

hi, for me i think having this is not kind of addiction but a help for us to make things more easier like cellphones use to communicate so fast and computer to process a thing faster rather than manuals, and maybe it will depend upon the user when we say she/he is an addicted to it.

I dont know if its a disease, but it is certainly an addiction. Why? Because we live in a technological dependent society. The ability to have the world at our fingertips is what draws us in. The knowledge, the media, the social networks, its all out there for us, and we dont even have to leave our own bedroom. Does it take away from other important factors of our life, YES! But there are some that live that balance of digital & reality.
• Germany
6 Jan 13
This balance between digital and reality, I think, is quiet difficult to manage. It needs self-control to get it done. For many of us, the digital world is our reality and cannot see any more the difference between those two worlds.

Lets face reality, 99.9% of the world is run by computers and we use computers in our lives for just about everything. Without computers I wouldn't have a job or be able to go to college. Technology is here to stay and will be with us forever as a major part of our lives. I don't think it's an addiction since we can't live without them in today's society. The world revolves around technology. Without technology we would go back to the stone age and we would stop advancing as a technological species.
