Do you enjoy volunteering your time?

There are a variety of ways that we can volunteer our time and help others or some type of worthy cause. In some areas there may be a lot of ways that a person can volunteer to help others. Perhaps by helping at a homeless shelter, soup kitchen, pet shelter, hospice center, helping the elderly in some way, etc. I enjoy doing volunteer work. I plan to try and do more when my daughter gets a little bit older and when I'm able to get us another car.

You know I have tried to volunteer my services a few times here in town, and it seems they just don't want any help. I went to the senior citizen center and said, "hey, I would love to volunteer my services, maybe deliver meals to the in-bound or even deliver some flyers for you" They made me wait almost 20 minutes before even acknowledging I was there. I volunteered once, and then they never called me back to volunteer again. I went to the animal shelter and would you believe, they didn't even have anything for me to do. We offered to walk their dogs, and we did that the one time we went there. I'd like to volunteer my time, but it just seems like there isn't any place here in town that wants or needs help. I would volunteer some time at a soup kitchen, but we don't even have one of those. Oh well...

Well it's good that you at least have the volunteer spirit. That is really strange that there isn't much help that they need. When it comes to volunteering most places would love to have volunteers or need more help in some way. But you tried so that is a great thing. Maybe some time in the future there will be some place in your area that needs help.

I sure hope so, because I think it's a good idea to give to others without expecting anything in return.

I have been volunteering at the local center of culture, teenagers and sport. There is a basic computer usage lessons for elders and some challenged teenagers. I volunteer there as a helper to the guide and help each and everyone who needs help with the computer and the tasks he needs to do. We teach some Word, Excel, Power Point, files management, Internet, Email... I have good time volunteering there and some times I even give private lessons at homes ( for money most of the times). I also learn from that activity, I developed some connections and I even found a job from there. The center keeper is also a storage moderator and he needs my help as a storage keeper. I have been working with him for 3 weeks now. Without volunteering, I would probably keep looking for a job in computers even if I'm not qualified enough. I work only 7 hours a day, I can keep volunteering at the center and even give private lessons once in a while. I feel good with myself and I get appreciated.

I'm glad that you are able to volunteer your time to help others. I do think that it is a good thing for us to do this. After all we can all use the extra encouragement that we get when we help others. Keep up the good work.

Yeah our time is precious. It is important that we make sure that how and what we are doing to volunteer will help others. And we feel good about it when we know that they will benefit. I really do enjoy doing volunteer work.

I haven't done any volunteer work yet, but I'd love to do something, like packing those little love packages for kids in needs or tell tales to sick kids in the hospital. I can't go to a pet shelter, as I'm allergic to fur and feathers.

Yeah those are great things to do. It would be neat to be able to do something like that. I will have to look up those little love packages and see if there is anything like that in my area. I hope that you will be able to do volunteer work in the near future. It really is a great feeling to be able to help others.

I would absolutely love to volunteer and to help others. Unfortunately, my schedule is a little hectic and I can't really divide my time in so many parts. There was one time when I was serciously thinking of volunteering but then I got a job and I quit the idea. I believe that vounteering gives you a nice feeling that derives from helping others and making oneself useful. There are a few people that would do this, in my knowledge, because it takes some time dedicated to this, and it is not paid. Of course we are not materialistic but we need money to survive, isn't it. I appreciate you for what you do. The good that you do will surely come back to you.

Thanks! What you say is so true. Many people do not want to volunteer because they aren't getting paid. I actually feel bad about that because my husband has developed that type of attitude. He use to do volunteer work as well but now he doesn't like to do it because he isn't getting paid for it. I think it is a good idea for us to be balanced in that regard because money and material possession isn't everything.

I don't have a lot of free time since I work long hours but I always make time to volunteer at my daughters school. They put on fundraising activities and I help out with those. I also chaperone their field trips.

I'm glad to hear that you are able to volunteer at your daughter's school. I'm sure that they appreciate that. I hope to do things like that when my daughter goes to school. It's going to be nice helping out at her school as well as spending time with her. I'm going to love being a chaperone on field trips. My mother wasn't able to do things like that when I was little but I remember a good friend of mine her mother went with us to Washington DC for a field trip. It was great. She set such a good example for us on that trip.

I don't do any organised volunteering at the moment, although one could say that my life is one big exercise in volunteering as we accept visitors to live with us at the farm and want to learn more about permaculture and self reliance! I cook for them, organise them and try to teach them what they're looking for. Sometimes it makes me feel my life isn't my own, but if I can show just one person something that will change their life for the better then I feel I'll have succeeded. Before I made the decision to have the farm and lead a more conventional life I volunteered in the gardening part of a day centre for adults with learning disabilities, in a charity shop, at adult literacy lessons and with a charity working to combat loneliness in the elderly. All were rewarding in their own way, but the work I did with the elderly was the best for me. Since I've been limited in what I can do in person (I live a way from town and am really busy at home) I have tried various volunteering schemes where I could work online with administrative and organising, but none have worked out.

That is great that your family does that. That is a type of volunteer work. And if you don't charge I'm sure that others are appreciating your efforts. I can relate to at times feeling like our life really isn't ours. Yeah working with individuals who we know really do need our help can be very rewarding. Keep up the great work with taking care of your family. Doing those things is a lot in itself.

I am a voluntary language teacher for a family from Myanmar. The family lives in my country and they plan on staying here so they want to learn the Danish language. I visit them every week and I help their with their pronounciation, grammar and vocabulary. I have been their language teacher for one year, and I enjoy helping them. At the moment I only have have time for one type of voluntary work, but in the future I would like to get involved in other kinds of voluntary work. I would like to become one of those people who visit lonely people in their homes. I have thought about that for a long time and when I get more free time I want to get involved in that kind of voluntary work.

I'm glad to hear that you are a volunteer teacher. I'm sure that you enjoy the work that you do. Helping others is a great way for us to gain greater joy out of life. And children are precious, when we teach them we see how happy and willing they are to learn new things. They can be very humble unlike a lot of adults. Visiting lonely individuals would be a great thing to do. We really do feel good when we are able to help those who need our time and attention.

HI Dominique25, I also love to do volunteer works during my free time. I do not have a lot of money to give away to those who are in need so I make it a point to give them some of my time and attention. That way, I am able to fulfill my social responsibility as a part of a community and I feel happy doing it.

Yeah I completely agree with what you are saying. We as well aren't able to give financially but we can give our time. It makes us feel happy to do so. I know that I personally enjoy giving my time to help others in a worthy cause. It would be nice if in the future I can give financially in some way as well.

During high school we had this program like National Honor Society or something like that and we would do so much volunteering there, everything from donating people food and money to giving gifts to homeless people during the holidays. It was a lot of fun helping people, animals and the environment. Unfortunately nowadays I no longer have enough time to volunteer but I still try to help as much as possible like buying food for someone who I know is hungry and donating money and goods.

I'm glad that you enjoyed doing those types of things. It is nice that they had a wide variety of things for you to do. I understand not having as much time to volunteer like that. But I'm glad to hear that you are able to do what you can when you can.
