Every garden has a special place for those flowers that contribute greatly to the beauty of a garden. I call them show stoppers. The flowers that contribute greatly to enhance the beauty of my garden are Bougainvillae. They come in different colours. I have planted them at random places so that when they are in bloom the whole garden is a riot of colour. The time they are not in bloom, sweet peas take their place and the bottle brush that adorns the entrance to my garden. The picture attached here is that of bougainvillae. These are easy to grow requiring least maintenance.
What planning do you do to ensure that your garden has some colour throughout the year.

Wow your garden is beautiful. Wish my looked half as good. I have a lot of rose bushes, hydrageas, rhodemdruims and azealas. We also do alot of annuals to fill in the gaps. My poor hydrangeas didn't do so well last year do to the last frost. Hopefully this year will be better. Winter here can be harsh to the plants.

What you see in the picture is just a small portion of our garden. I have planted these flowers all over so that I have colour most of the time. I too have roses but they are on my terrace but they don't yield as much and as for seasonals I only get balsom. You have weather problems which we do not have here If one can manage seasonal flowers nothing like it but there is a lot of work involved. I have some other perennial flowering plants too.

So jealous if that is only a small portion of your garden. Winters here are quite long. Flowers usually die off in Sept. and we don't get anything again until May if we're lucky. I do get a large veggie garden in the summer months and flowers in pots in the house for winter.

Reddog: There are a few varieties that will grow in the very early spring, such as Crocus and Lenten Rose. The crocus last until the spring bulbs begin to bud, usually from March until May. Lenten Rose is supposed to last about as long and hopefully this year I will get to see for myself.
There may be other varieties of flowers that will bloom for you in the early spring. Here is a link for you to look at that has some varieties of late winter blooming flowers: http://garden.lovetoknow.com/wiki/A_List_of_Spring_Flowers

Regretfully, the only things blooming in my garden are those that are drought resistant. We aren a serious drought and so are not allowed to water gardens or clean cars etc. Your garden looks wonderful!

Thanks. Nature has something or the other that grows in any given situation.

" here and there" That's the way to go Jen... What grows well should be planted randomly so that there is colour in the garden. Bougainvillae grow well in my garden and that is why I have planted them all over and at random places. They are perennials requiring least maintenance. Don't you have perennials that grow which are easy to maintain? Are azaleas perennials?
