This really baffles me. Should TV hosts look at her guest during an interview? or address the TV camera? We have one local TV show who always looks at the camera while giving comments and asking questions to her guests. I think it did not look right. I think she should look at the guest when addressing the guest but should not forget to also get connected with the viewers from time to time but not all the time. What do you think?

They should do both. To be polite to the guest they need to look at them when they are asking queistions. The veiwers also needed to included, the host needs to look at the camera every once in a while.

Yeah, Kat! But I think much of her attention should be towards the guests, right?

Yes, the most attention should be to the guest.

The hosts looks too formal when they keep looking at the camera instead of their guests and sooner or later the viewers gets irritated by that person. Well hosting is a highly professional job and not everyone can do this. A good host will bind the viewers and the guest in the conversation at the same time. I think the host you are talking about really lacks skills and experience.

When you are addressing someone, doesn't matter who they are, friend, work colleague, star it is polite to give eye contact, talking to someone whilst focusing in on the camera I would consider as being rude and disrespectful.

It is, and I find it weird that this particular local host would be looking at the camera while she is asking questions or addressing the guests even if the camera is focused on her face but I think she should not be looking at it.

I think a good TV host shall balances this well. That means to say she/he shall look at the guest and then sometimes look at the camera. So the audiences will feel that she/he is talking with them, too. Of course the staff who hold the camera and swift the different scenes are also important.

Hi cutie Exactly i too observed this.I really dont like the way they host the show. They always have their concentration on the camera and not the guest. yes they should look at the guest while questioning. The camera man will look after the other things. But some hosts are clever i guess they maintain the show very well.

Yes, the cameraman as directed should know what angles to capture.

If in the show there is an invited person, of coutse the host should look at the invited person. Otherwise, the host should look only at the camera. This has a meaning, it refers to eye-to-eye contact, even if it's at TV, it's purpose is to trasmit a sense of trust to the audience.

Hi, Theo! Yes, audience contact is important but in this case, she has a guest and she has to be in contact with her guest as well and much of the time.

It depends on whether the guest(s) are suppose to be on the camera. I know there are times that people don't want to be shown like America's Most Wanted has had people interviewed that need to be hidden. I think the guest should be shown and be the main focus when they are suppose to be on the air.

Yes, of course, but when the camera goes to the host from time to time, the host shouldn't be looking at it when the guest is talking or when she is ready to ask the guest the next question.

I agree with you. The guest should be getting the main attention of the host. And as you say the viewers should be included but with an occasional look by the host and the guests. Of course there is the possibility that if the host is the only one being shown that the camera is behind the guest and the host is looking at the guest. But if both are on camera, then the host should look at the guest when talking to them and only occasionally give a glance to the camera to include them and maybe a little more often it there is a studio audience.

Hi friend, you are right, the host must look at the guest while asking questions to him, it is not a good activity to face the camera and asking questions to the guest. I think the show director must guide her in a good way to avoid this problems

Yes, Vid. In our local TV stations though, there are no directors. It's just the cameraman who is not even professional enough to follow the conversation with his camera. He will just position the camera in one place and that's it.

Yes, I agree with you. The host should not the one who is looking at the camera. The cameraman should be the one who is responsible in focusing the host so that the host is not the one who is adjusting.

Yes, that's another good point. There should be a director to direct the cameraman where he should shoot.

Not that I watch much TV but have seen several hosts, interviewing guests and of course they look at their guests talking to them. And in between they look in the camera. Can't see the point. It never disturbed me at all.

It just got me curious Franse because a local TV host looks at the cam much of the time and the guest only sometimes. She reversed it and it bothers me.

Hi cutie. Well first of all the host represents the viewers. And his/her questions should be those which the viewers should be interested in. So one should start by acknowledging the guest and looking at him/her indicating that the question is for them. And then continue the question looking at the camera. And when the guest answers he/she should look at the guest for most of the time. This is my opinion. And I would have done this way if I was the host. Anyways have a nice day... ~=SuperShames=~

Dear, TV host represents viewers, therefore, his face should always before camera and only at the time of talking with guest before guest.

I am confused, if the host represents the viewers, then he should be facing the guest because the viewers are surely looking at the guest.

Depends on the situation,if the host is talking to the studio audience or guest star, surely he must look at them. That makes the impression that the host put respect to the guest and audience. But if the host is talking to the audience at home,he must look to the camera TV.
