I was just wondering whether we all do the same thing no matter which part of the world we live in. As kids, we would go to the beach with our elders and get busy building hillocks in the sand, break them and build again, pick shells, run around, eat ice cream and other stuff that one would find hawkers selling there. Is it any different where you live?

We would more or less go to smaller area's that had lakes with beaches. I do live near a huge lake called Lake Erie in Ohio but we didn't go there...only to smaller recreational area's for swimming and picnic's.
I'd have to say yes, we did the same thing. We would build sand castles and then tear them down and start again. I would go hunting for little fish, tadpoles or crabs to take home and try to make them into pets. They did have little stores which would sell ice cream, french fries, hot dogs, peanuts....all the goodies everyone loves to eat when they're little. We would only usually get ice cream though as my mom would make us fried chicken with potato salad, and a dessert of some sorts. It was fun and made great memories for me.

Aww, I wish I could have checked that video out...that was so kind of you to do. One of these days I'll be able to have as much fun as everyone else here. I still want to see the one with the elephant too.

Nice to know you have access to lakes. Being on a coastline we have several beaches, some have been developed but some I would call them as virgin beaches but as adults those beaches are best to spend quiet moments. Eating indeed is a common feature.
We too went on picnics from the school, and also with family and friends.
In 2010, I took the orphans to spend time at one of the Beach Resorts as a Christmas outing. Had a great time. There is a video link in Jenny's box. But you had once said downloading takes time.

I think the best thing to do on the beachfront is spend time together with my family and friends. Love the beach.

And while spending time with family and friends as kids we would be busy doing our things. As a kid how did you spend time on the beach?

I lived in a small town [Trichy] for most part of my life. When I was a child and went with my father to places like Chennai I used to go to the beach and these memories are evergreen in my mind.We used to fool around in the beach sand , what with favourite cousins for company and mouthwatering cut salted spicy mango slices to bite , I find the memories themselves so refreshing.
The joys of childhood! But I feel I would love to got to the beach even now and stand in knee deep water waiting for big waves to hit the shore and drench us up to the hips.I would prefer good company that would scream 'yeeyyyyyy' when the foamy waves splash water on me.Recently I had gone to Mahalakshmi Mandir in Mumbai [it is just on rocky terrain surrounded by the ocean.]and in a totally unexpected moment a giant wave just drenched us top to bottom and how I loved it!
We are all the same in many aspects and that is what makes us find so many common topics here.

Crossing a river to go to the beach! Wow!That is another thing I love--to bathe in knee deep clear river water[shallow water/the brave heroine that I am ]
Have done it when I was unmarried in river Cauvery and later, twice in river Tamiraparani in Tirunelveli disrict. I love wading through this water and also having a bath in shallow sumps or medium sized concrete tubs of water.Getting wet is another experience.
It is more than thirty years since I went to Mumbai beach[Juhu, the famous one] but despite its fame the black water does not appeal to me [even way back in 1974 when I came here as a visitor I found the black sea water very distasteful].The Bhelpuri and eatables make up for this however.

You are right about Mumbai kala. I have been to several beaches there but have not dared to get in. I forgot about my Bahamas cruise kala and there the sands are pure white specially the Coco Kay beach. That part of the Beach in Venice where I had gone was owned by this hotel and they had equipped it with lovely chairs and garden umbrellas. I better start a blog on the beaches I have visited!
I have gone to the river to collect cockles along with family when I was a teenager. That was yet another wonderful experience.
I too am not comfortable in the water. I have learnt to swim but I could only do that in the children's area! And now after the accident I don't do it any more.

That was indeed a very exciting experience there kala. I too have visited several beaches including beaches in Goa; ofcourse as an adult. But as a kid our visits were restricted to a beach that one could reach after crossing a river. That was the most memorable beach experience - some times with family and sometimes on a school picnic all packed with wonderful memories.
As an adult I have visited Goa, Mumbai and also a beach in Australia called Bondi Beach - the cleanest in the whole world. This beach is attended to I am told every 4 days, every spec of dirt is removed.
Close to home where I live now, I have several beaches and in the year 2010 we took the orphans as a Christmas Gift, to a Beach resort. There is a video link up in Jenny's box. You might like to have a peep here.
I have been to Goa a couple of times but once we chose rains to be there - the best time to go there. We were sipping tea in one of the tea stalls quite protected and suddenly there was a heavy downpour. It was a treat watching unprotected revelers on the beach getting completely drenched and to think that they continued to get drench and did not run for cover made the sight all the more exiting.
In Mumbai where I spent my prime years who can forget the hawkers selling tender coconut, bhel puri, kulfi, and the famous corn on cob!

I did the same thing as you did when I was young. The only difference is the beach that we usually go to during Summer is not a travel spot. It is just one of those beaches that is not commercialized. It was just about a kilometer away from my grandma's house. So I'd be always going there when I wake up in the morning then come back in the after when the tides are low, picking seashells and would be playing with sand.

I have several beaches here around me and not all are commercial beaches as you have put it. But there is one which has a Beach Resort. We took the orphans there during Christmas 2010. Here is a link that shows a bit of what the kids were up to!

These nuns are doing a good job. I have been involved with this Order since the last almost 10 years. I have taken these kids to various locations - locations where only the well to do get the experience. Why not anyway. These kids have a future better than even those kids whose mothers are working and only maids care for them. These nuns are dedicated and bring out the best in these kids.

I went to the beach occasionally as a child and still only go occasionally now. In Canada we have limited beach weather and it is sometimes to get out there at all during the summer months. I love it though. I also love to take a vacation in the sunny south and relax on the beach...a great break from the snow!

Have you watched the sun set there Suebee. We have spent hours just waiting for the sun to go down. And this not as kids but as grown ups. As kids we look at the beach with different eyes. It is amazing how we view the same place differently.

I have had the joy of feeding Dolphins when I was in the US on my package holiday. I think it was in Forida that we were taken to the sea world. We had to buy fish there and feed these Dolphins. They would come to the shore waiting to be fed. I could see a smile on their faces.
It is worth getting up early Suebee to get that experience.

How very true. As a kid I was always more interested in playing in the water and the waves and looking for shells. Now I would rather sit quietly and watch the others play. I haven't watched a sunset on the beach for ages...something I'm gonna have to make sure I do next time.
There is one place where we like to take a vacation where in the wee hours of the morning, at sunrise, the dolphins come close to the shore to play. I am not a morning person but that is worth getting up early for!

Just as the sea the wild could be equally exciting and thrilling. When on holidays I have experienced it specially when I was in Australia. We were taken on a cable car through the most dense forests at Cairn. And then in Christchurch,New Zealand we walked through forests - no we did not encounter any wild life. But it is my dream to go to the Africa where one can sit in a vehicle and watch animals freely roaming the forests!

There are so many, I just find you get in touch with nature. This past summer I went with a bunch of people, we went canoeing, and paddle boating. We sat around the fire, adn relaxed. When I was younger we would go with the girl guides, learn different ways of cooking, and techniques of being in the wild.

Love the beach. I love just sitting and relaxing. I also love just digging my feet in the sand. Although that now scares me since I caught a tropical desease by doing that in the sand in Jamaica. I got worms in my feet from dirty sand.

Nowadays beaches are polluted and one needs to be careful. During our days we were carefree and none of these things worried us. You could still visit the beach. Just sit there and watch the waves and wait for the sun to set. Have you witnessed a sun set it is beautiful! The sun is surrounded by a glow and it sinks in the sea!!

At my local beach the worries are sinking mud and a dangerous tide. People are not able to paddle or swim in the sea. There are warning triangles explaining the dangers. We have the town beach, Sand Bay and Up Hill. Children like to dig in the sand and build sand castles. Adults hire a deckchair on a hot and sunny day. It can be windy so lots of families bring a wind breaker to set up on the sand. There are places to get an ice cream, tea, coffee and soft drinks.
I eat a vegan diet. Ice Cream that is vegan is for sale in a supermarket. I like to walk along the seashore looking at the fine views. Two off shore islands can be seen. The beach season is June to August in my home country. The summer weather was cool and wet last summer. I long for some sunshine and warm weather.

A beach experience is meant to be repeated. One never gets tired of it no matter what age. Just sitting and watching the waves and even waiting for the sunset is time well spent. I particularly like to watch the sun set. It actually moves! Or is it the world that moves!
Walking along the sea shore bare feet is considered healthy. Do you walk bare feet maximax? Your kids must be enjoying it too.

I live near the beach so I go there every weekend , whenever my friends visit we all party on the beach at night . I also enjoy swimming in the beach at night .
I think what you mention we all do it as kids , nothing like a day at the beach and having a cold ice cream .

Vow! You must be a water baby! Is the beach lit that you can safely enjoy your time there in the night silver...?
Here we have several hawkers selling stuff on the beaches. Besides ice cream we have a special item called 'bhel puri' No visit to the beach is complete without savouring this speciality. We also have corn on cob well roasted with a brush of lime, salt and chilli powder. Both children and adults enjoy these goodies.

I know there are places where there is no sand but only rocks. I have seen such sea shores. Sitting on the rocks or climbing, or even chasing each other is indeed yet another exciting experience. But sand or no sand, rocks or no rocks if there is one thing that one will see on any beach is ice cream. We have more than ice cream. The vendors will scream their guts out with lots of other goodies and who bothers about their dirty hands when they mix that bhel puri and hand it over!
Have you tried eating tubs of ice cream now hoping that you will yet not lose your 36-24-36 figure!

I live in Puerto Rico so I'm surrounded by beautiful beaches. Love walking the beach and picking up seashells. When my grandkids were here in November I build sandcastles with them in the sand. It was so much fun. Nothing better then being at the beach on a nice clear day relaxing and enjoying God's creation.

I love the beach too (when I was a kid)
But now, I only walk along the beach during sunset and early morning.
I enjoy the breeze and feel the heat of the sand under my feet.

What we do as kids we hardly do when we grow up but I love collecting shells even now whenever I take my guests to the beach which is close by. We have our breakfast there. Walking on the sand with bare feet is considered to be a very good exercise.

As kids, ..let me be more specific...around sixth and seventh standard...we used to pick a few chapatis, and a little bit of curry and go right up to the terrace of our hostel and eat it there ...under the moonlight...it was so private...secret...very few knew of it...and there we planned other pranks like how we will scare others...good days..beach...too far from my hostel as well as my home.

Does it mean vandana you have never been to a beach even as an adult? I quite understand how exciting it must have been to do those things that you did on the terrace. As kids our mind works differently and ofcourse why not. Eating at a place other than a dining table and that too on the terrace? Vow truly exciting.

I live in Pa. We don't have any oceans close to us, but alot of the lakes have added beaches. We go alot in the summer. I still build sand castles only now the kids knock them down. Nothing better than having ice cream at the beach on a hot day. Can't really pick shells since its not a real beach, but its fun away.

Nothing like spending time on the beach be it the lake or the sea. It is amazing how as kids we all do the same thing no matter where we live. Same is the case with the type of games we played!
