***The Wii......Do You Think This Is Possible?

Ok, I don't know too much about the Wii as I do not have the system or any of the games. I have heard about it though and everyone seems to like it.
I'm just wondering if you feel it's possible to lose any weight with this just playing around in your livingroom?
I'm basically talking about the sport games...like bowling, tennis, etc.......NOT the fast paced exercise game. I can't do that one, unless there is one that is for older people and is a bit easier on the heart, bones and joints.
I would just like to start out easy and then go from there. I have not exercised in quite a while but I do still love to walk....but it's just walking and nothing else..not even a fast paced walk.
Since it's Winter here I was thinking maybe this would be a good idea until summer comes along where I can get out more.
What do you think about this all you Wii people? Would it really work or not and has anyone ever tried it to lose weight or is it just for fun? I'm really clueless to this one.

I don't have the Wii (wish I did though, lol) but our neighbor across the street has it. We have played the sports ones and I think its possible to lose a little weight. The excercise program my mother does is less moving than that and she has lost 15 pounds this month with that and eating better! I think its possible. =) And the best part is it's super fun!

Really!!! That gives me hope, lol! What exercise program does your mom do? My oldest daughter has one but I've never tried it or even know how it works. I've only heard from what people say it's all about and it does sound like fun. Thanks hon for responding...you might be my only one, lol!

My mother does some sitting exercise, it's called Sit and Get Fit or something to that effect. She is very overweight so she is starting with that one and then she will move on to harder things. She is taking baby steps just like me, but with different things. Lol.
Your welcome, for responding and I think you will get more!

I never heard about that one..Sit and Get Fit. I'm not terribly overweight..about 8-10 pounds but I really don't want it on this old falling apart body, lol! There is only so much housework you can do for exercise and then it gets old and boring, ya know?
I thinking more of on the tennis, bowling stuff..might be fun to do. Heaven knows I need to do something!

I wouldn't say it would help you lose weight at a very efficient way, but it does do its job. Of course however, since you do say that you're starting out easy, it is much easier to transition into doing a more extensive exercise. Try boxing! it may not seem hard, though when done seriously, it made me sweat a lot!

Boxing might be a bit much for me to start out with. I was thinking more of a low impact type game...I think they have walking, bowling and tennis. That sounds more my speed to start....boxing later.

McCreeper, I can't help but disagree, it is very efficient in my opinion. Due to sever disabilities and a lot of extra weight any loss is efficient for me. I have found the Wii to be a very good game control to use in weight loss. One does not have to"sweat" to lose weight just be consistent in some movement of the muscles using a little resistance.

Take it from someone who has one, get one!!
I've had mine for a few years now, and while I don't always use it, it has helped me to lose weight.
I have the Wii Sports Resort, and that gives you options on exercises to do, but you'd need to buy a balance board as well for this one.
I don't have my system hooked up right now, but when I had it on my old tv, I used it a lot during last winter and I did shed some weight.
As long as you use it, it does help. There are many games that you can buy that are for low impact and easy for anyone to do, so go out to the store and find them.

Thanks for the information. I'm so behind in the times, lol! I know what the Wii is and of course have heard of it, but never it had so many programs with it. The low impact would be a great starter for me.

My wife and I use the bowling, tennis and some of the other games when we feel good. We sometimes play them to make us feel better. The thing is you don't even have to be able to get up and move around to get some benefit from the games it has. I sometimes even sit in my chair and play the bowling and the dart game.

Manleyjoe.....thanks for the information! I think the bowling and tennis would be great for me to start with, just to see how far I can go with it. If I'm too bored I can try something harder. I definitely want it to make me feel better....mentally and physically. It drives me crazy sitting around here....but darts is fun! But I'd still want to move around a bit. Thanks again!

hi Kashmeresmycat as you may remember I live in a retirement center and our residents president took the money from the little shop we have and bought a Wii bowling system on the say so that we all would be down and use it and like so many great programs we have had here at first people came then quickly it just starting gathering dust.
People here are apathetic about anything that might actually help them mentally. physically or emotionally and just stick to the two big boob tubes. now I like some programs but not the crap they watch like old old reruns.and too a lot have their own tvs in their rooms so there are just five of us computer nerds but we all do love our computers and we stick to them.I have heard that you can lose weight to some of the programs.
We had a wonderful program called exercise your mind and the funding for it dried up when the garden grove school system was cu t back several million dollars by t he then Governor. It was for all of us bu t specially for those who have had strokes to get back their brain function; the teacher told me I was such an A student that I did not really need it but she loved having me there and I did manage to get some residents to join who might otherwise not have done it but my roomie refused.

Hiya Hat.
My wife and I play the bowling a lot. I try to gt my dad to play but he won't. I tell him he doesn't even have to get up from the chair but he still won't play.
Dad sticks to his word search puzzles even foregoing the TV.

Hi Hatley...my little chickadee! That's such a shame that they just want to watch tv...I mean, I can do that all day too but I really don't want to at all. Nor do I want to be on this computer for hours on end. I don't want to wither away to nothing, lol! I just thought if I could mess around in my livingroom for a 1/2 hour or hour everyday I would feel much better about myself. Might as well do this while I still can, right?
Hi webeishere.....yes, the bowling sounds like real fun to me. As long as I'm moving around a bit I'll feel like I'm doing something. And something is better than nothing.

myLot ate my response, grr!
Wii is fun!
I have the sports games and it is possible to get a work out at least. Being animated playing tennis (if not with someone next to you!) will get you some good exercise and it isn't too hard to do.
What I do is play boxing. I'm up near pro level and it gets hard. You need to punch fast and move a lot, i get work out even if I look silly.

If myLot ate my response I would be a pound heavier! I heard that Wii is lots of fun so that's why I'm curious about it. I've never seen it nor do I know what it even looks like on the tv, so I'm really looking forward to it.
I'm sure the boxing will do me good once I get into a regular pattern of exercise...right now I don't do much so I don't want the old ticker to go bonkers just yet. I need to work up to that one.
Pro level...wow, good for you!! If it was even 5 years ago I would do that one first, but.....best not right now.

I am sure you will enjoy it. I think its a great thing to have in the winter time. Though I still haven't played it much. I may soon though after reading this discussion. Sometimes I have kids over so I don't have a chance to play it myself.

We have owned a Wii ourselves now for a couple of yrs. I Love mine, but would never consider it a way to loose weight unless you were to make sure and eat a little more healthier and less sweets, carbs, etc. while doing so, and maybe more water because of the work out it gives. I actually enjoy the bowling and sports games and these are quite rigorous.

I do watch what I eat, but sometimes I cheat, lol! Not to a point of being out of control though. I really do eat healthy but with winter here I don't get out that much and I thought this might be a fun way to get some exercise inside while the weather is so icky.
I'd like to try the bowling especially, and eventually boxing if I can handle it. Someone mentioned dancing too and archery. I'd love to do this and think I could really lose some weight if I put my mind to it. I'm not looking to lose a lot, just about 10 pounds or so which isn't too bad. I think I gained because of the lack of exercise so this might get me up and moving.

My daughter has the Wii Fit game. I've tried it & it does give you a heck of a workout. Especially the yoga parts. It has so much that will give one a cardio workout like a gym would. It has various levels & you can go at your own pace at anytime actually. It is fun. If I didn't have my eldery dad living with us we'd use it. But our living room is so small he'd have a hard time making it around the house when we used it.

I just want to start out at a low impact and work my way up. I think the bowling sounds like alot of fun, and maybe even the tennis. I heard they have one for walking too, which is what I really like to do. It all bears down to just wanting to move around already...I'm ansy because it's winter..ugh.

I do think you would at least get some very good exercise! I know they are using them in nursing homes around here and some of the residents who haven't been able to do any exercise are now finally using this and getting more flexible. My sister's friend works at a nursing home and one guy that was way overweight and in a wheel chair loves the boxing one....and it has done him a world of good...besides....its fun!

Well there you go! That's all I needed to hear. I think it just sounds like so much fun and only recently have I even thought about it. My daughter has a Wii which I didnt' even know, and we were going to play the bowling on Christmas but there just wasn't enough time in the night to do this. She explained to me how much fun it was. That's what got me thinking. I'm not much of an exercise person as far as treadmill, going to a gym type person. I do like to DO things though so when she mentioned bowling, I thought...oh, how much fun would that be! I'm going to get myself one for sure, even if it's a used one..don't care. Thanks for your input, it's great to hear.

I see various replies here from it won't help to it will help. I bought a Wii for my son a couple years ago and started out with the sports and played the bowling/baseball ones. I didn't play long enough, because I just couldn't get the feel for it, probably because I also didn't have time to practice with school and my book.
I think you could on the sports game, but I KNOW you can on the Just Dance games...I know you said nothing fast paced, but there are slow songs on these games and when you work yourself up, there is what is called the "Just Sweat" and trust me, it works you out and also has the stretching which is good, because knowing my son, he wouldn't stretch on his own..lol
Anyways, I like it the Just Dance ones, unfortunately I got sick about 2-3 weeks after I bought the first game and so I haven't had a chance to play. So I totally need to get my schoolwork done today, maybe I will play and finally work myself up for that "Dance Challenge" my son proposed..

Thanks Carmel!! It sure does sound like fun and what a great thing to have in the wintertime. I just hate sitting around here all day on the computer or watching tv...and you can only do so much housework and then it gets old. I want to move around but I'm not into all those exercise video's you see on the market.
I like doing something like the bowling, or tennis, etc. That's what I'm looking for because I think they would be more fun. The dance one sounds fun too as long as I can start out with a low impact. I'm still confused on how it works but I'll figure it out.

If it's weight that you are trying to lose then I'm not sure Wii would be right for you, not unless you want to get their workout program. Bowling is just making motions w/ you arm as if you were really bowling. I would suggest you save your money & get yourself a tread climber/treadmill. That's what I did. You set the pace your able to do & that's it. In the warmer seasons I love to walk just about everywhere, but like you I don't like the cold weather so I don't walk as much. So I asked my husband if we could get a tread climber & he agreed. Now in the colder months I spend maybe 20 to 30 minutes every other day just walking on my tread climber while I either read, listen to music or watch TV. You start out small & work yourself up from there, trying to work out on the tread climber/treadmill for longer periods of time.

Thanks for responding...my only problem is I would find that too boring. I like to be doing something so that's why I thought of the Wii. There is a boxing one that sounds interesting that I would like to try eventually. To start out though, I thought the bowling, tennis, would be some fun.
I don't have much to lose, just about 8-10 lbs. I gained because I quit smoking. I just don't want to gain anymore and the lack of exercise that I get is more than likely the cause. I need to start out with low impact to begin as I'm not young anymore. Thanks for the response though, I appreciate it.

I used to have a wii. I don't think it would really do much for loosing weight. Just those regular games is only working out your arm. I now have x box kinnect. I do the dance games and I am soaked in sweat after ten minutes. That one is a way better work out.

Thanks but I need to start out with a low impact workout and then move up. That's why I thought I'd try the bowling or tennis. Once I feel I'm a bit more fit for my age, then I can move forward to something more strenuous.
