We all known that it is important to sleep for 8 hours in a day. However, today I read an article and according to the scientists' research, this is not the best style. They found that actually the people who sleep 7 hours a day have longer lives than the people who sleep for 8 hours a day. What an interesting research So I shall not be guilty if I sleep late at night?

Everyone is different in the amount of sleep they need (and in their actual sleep pattern), so generalisations like "you need 8 hours sleep a day" or "you should drink 8 glasses of water a day" are, at the best, inaccurate and, at the worst, misleading and dangerous.
Provided that you do not feel tired and in need of sleep during the day, you are probably getting enough. In fact, even if you are sleeping for 8 hours (or more) each night but feel tired and sleepy during the day, you are either not being kind to yourself or the sleep you are getting is of the wrong kind.
There is no need to feel guilty if you sleep only five or six hours a day and wake feeling refreshed and capable; likewise, if you find that you need 10 hours, then that is what you should allow yourself!

I may not agree to a uniform requirement of 7 hours or 8 hours. It depends upon how tired you are, what was the nature of activity you did during the day, and even personal habits and physiology I think. Therefore, if you did strenuous activity you would find 7 hours quite refreshing, but if you've been watching television the whole day, you might need 8 hours.

A few years ago, I started trying to get atleast 8 hours of sleep and averaged around 7 hours daily. I would wake up after 7 hours of sleep. I figured that was what worked for me. Now I realize that I need 7 hours of sleep at least and if I don't get that, I would be yawning all day next day.

Hi youless, I'm glad to learn this for I don't have 8 hours of sleep. I usually go to bed a little after 12 am and would get up before or after 7.30 am. I would feel energetic after having 6 hours of proper sleep. Having how long of sleep is just a figure to show the time we spend on bed. It's important that whether we have a soundly sleep or rem sleep. We need a complete rest that we can rest properly without any disturbance of nightmare or dream I suppose
Happy posting

Yes, although adults can do with less children need more. My grandson does best with around 10 hours of sleeps. I have know of some adults getting 4-5 hours a night and functioning well. Maybe some people reach REM sleep quicker.

I wonder what scientists would make of someone who sleeps for 12 hours! I have found as I have got older I need more sleep than less, 8 hours however was never enough for me, I used to average about 9/10 hours a night. Now I seem to need 12, it maybe because of the medications I am on or because of the Winter. I know I am more active at night, so I tend to stay up late and get up late. When I was working I'd always choose the late shifts.

There are many people who have different sleeping schedules. Mostly it is recommended to sleep eight hours because of the work and physical activities we do. If people are healthy they can sleep for a lesser time maybe six to five hours. I had my sir and my office boss who only used to sleep for five hours. They said they had lots of work and they wanted to earn more money so they reduced their sleep.
People who are weak or sick need to sleep atleast eight hours because they can make up for the medicines they have taken. The sleep will also help them recover soon. I sleep for eight hours a day as it is recommended by most doctors.

hey youless.
Scientists research say something different daily so i wouldn't not be sold on what they say.
a normal sleep cycle has 1 and a half up to 2 hours and you should get at least 3 (4 preferred) per night to be okay the next day.

It's an interesting research indeed, what do they say about people who sleep less than 7 hours and what about those who sleep in meetings and classes or while studying..

Yeah, I have read about that too. Interestingly people who sleep lesser hour than 8 hours seem to live longer than the people who sleep for 8 hours or more. But the same study also find that people who sleep less than 5 hours also has less life expectation than people who sleep for longer hours, so I believe the optimal sleep for general people is not 8 hours but 6-7 hours and don't sleep lesser than 5 hours, that's also not healthy.

Oh yes, The body reacts... That's why when it needs sleep even at the middle of the day, we feel sleepy. 6 hours is not a problem for grown people..observe the old people..they sleep and waek up..then sleep again and wake up again. 6 hours is not the best but it is better than. No sleep

:O maybe it has some truth to it too. Cause when I sleep long like up to 10 hours, I feel so tired afterwards. I don't know why. It makes sense that too much sleep is bad for you if it really tires you. And I've observed that too that when I sleep for only 7 hours, my stamina is perfect. :)

Then I guess it's best to stay up late and sleep at 11 if you want to wake up at 6. :)

Whatever. At least shuteye in the very least. It's okay to live more from life. Can this mean that by living longer they mean that one is awake longer? Haha. Just sleep to recharge your body. Wake up and it's a brand new day. Get the most from the day and at night, call it a day. It shouldn't be a cycle that robs you of anything but an enriching one. I suppose you can sleep any time now, it's a free country. Sleep for seven hours a day and see the results and the differences.

Anything that is too-much can cause problems. However when it comes to sleep, rest and work, the body knows to adjust. Whether we are conscious of it or not.

Actually, when I do get 8 hours of sleep, I feel much worse when I wake up. And that's the truth. I feel sluggish and feel more tired as if I haven't slept at all. But when I get some shut eye for 4 to 5 hours, I feel more refreshed and more alert.

Hi youless, I am not surprised to hear this and I think too, that it often depends on the person. While 7 or 8 hours may be best for the majority, some people don't need that much. I had a brother-in-law who passed away two years ago at the age of 95 and was healthy right up to the end. For all of his adult life, he rarely, if ever, slept more than 3 or 4 hours, yet he functioned well in everything that he did. I'm sure that he was an exception to the rule but it isn't completely uncommon. At 73, I find that 6 or 7 hours sleep is plenty for me and it was 7 or 8 when I was younger. Again, there may be exceptions to the rule, but I doubt if it's good to sleep 9 and 10 hours. Blessings.

I have also read that research shows that in between six and eight hours of sleep is the proper amount of sleep. I think it varies for each person though and we have to find what is right for each of us. I've been trying to get at least seven hours of sleep a day and I usually get that but I don't always wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and unsore.
I think that we still need days where we sleep in so that our bodies can recover from things like exercise, work, and our other daily activities.

Sometimes I got a problem sleeping but then I am always tired because I work hard. I think it is not the length of hours that matters but how deep is your sleep. When I'm not so tired my sleep is shallow but when I am so exhausted I sleep deep and I can have a good night sleep uninterrupted deep sleep for 4 hours and that is enough to keep me normal during the day.

Hi friend, you are right, the information is really interesting, so we can get more benefits with 7 hour rest compared with the 8 hours one. Here after most of the people will take 7 hour rest after reading this research article. I have 8 hour rest every day and now planned to change it as 7 hour rest
