Thank God It Wasn't The Big Pyrex Casserole Dish That Broke!

Oh dear, what a tense day I've had, what with my horrendous visit to the doctor an' all. Due to me getting up earlier for my appointment, all my parcels have arrived with me being up lol, including my massive Pyrex Casserole/Roasting Dish with lid from The Range. I used it for my chicken and I can honestly say, it was brilliant and I'm so relieved the darned dish fit in my oven. At least that was something positive, plus the Denby plates that also came today (3 of which I collected from Debenhams) so I'm happy. Well, I was. I had my chicken on a tray on top of the microwave to cool down, as we always use half one day and half the next, so I was about to put it in the fridge (bearing in mind it was about 11.30 pm at this point) and.. BANG! I caught the Pyrex MEASURING JUG (which had gravy in it) in the process of moving the tray and the jug smashed into what seemed to be a million pieces on the floor. It went EVERYWHERE, including the cat's food, so that had to be sorted out for a start. What amazed me the most though was John came rushing over and decided to clear up and then clean the floor! I kept telling him it was my mess but he wasn't having any of it and he's done a brilliant job too, bless 'im. I went over it with a dry cloth afterwards so it dried quicker but I can honestly say it won't need doing again tomorrow, which is just as well as we've ran out of floor cleaner now! I bet we continue to find mega-small pieces of glass though. Has that ever happened to you? Broken something made of glass and you think you've picked it all up but..oh, no, I swear the Goblin hides it in corners! By the way, Google search really annoys me at times. I was looking for the best price for a new Pyrex Measuring Jug - thought I saw the cheapest but then realised The Range wasn't factored in..and sure, enough I went on their site (where I bought it from in-store originally) and it was £2.99, some £3 cheaper than on Google search. On Ebay they were being sold for about £12!!

I'm sorry to hear that. Sounds like the last thing you needed! We seem to smash things far more often than you'd think possible as our house is currently so crowded and disorganised. The kitten also seems to smash a lot. I think the messiest had to be the kilo glass jar of runny honey he recently knocked down. In the end I laid down old cloth, walked on it (wearing boots!) to make the honey and glass stick, and threw the lots away.

Oh my, honey is a nightmare to work with in baking, never mind it sticking to floors. Well, at least I still buy golden syrup and treacle in those ace metal tins but I refuse to have Heinz Tomato Ketchup in those godawful plastic bottles. I nearly took a photograph of a glass one in Morrisons the other week as - to my dismay - they hadn't stocked them for ages. Perhaps people have complained about the plastic ones? Anyway, I'm glad to see the glass back, although I wouldn't fancy breaking one!

Until recently I never even knew Pyrex had been made in Sunderland. Ironically, it is now a Glass Museum!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Glass_Centre

Really my father should take a few lessons out of your John's book, if that had happened to my mum and has in the past, he would still sit on his fat a55 watching television, he wouldn't go and see what has happened, or check if mum was ok! No matter how hard you sweep up, how hard you manage to get up every last shard and piece you can guarantee that you will still find pieces days, sometimes weeks afterwards, and they seem to find wayout places to land! You've been through the mill and back of late my friend!

This is it, as I chose to try to move the chicken with the light off. I failed to mention that for fear of ridicule lol. However, my plan was to use the light from the fridge..and it backfired on me bigtime because I'd broken the jug before I had a chance to open it!!

Well, that was a waste of gravy! Glad you didn't get hurt in the process.

Haha! I think I was more upset over the gravy than the jug..but, seriously, the thing bounced on the worktop (off the microwave), then made this hideous crashing noise once it smashed into smithereens on the floor. Fortunately, I didn't burst into tears, although I would've done if it had been my fandabidozi dish, as that had only been used once..on the day of delivery! Gotta do a few things tomorrow (including picking up my new BHS light fitting) so it's a good excuse to pay The Range another visit. We're able to do this now that we don't go to the football and it's nice spending time with John away from the house.

Enjoy your shopping. And try not to break anything.

Hi Janey, you saying that your measureing jug broke, well, hub was taking the dish out from the microwave to was when I heard this crash, the cats flew out the catflap with fright, he dropped the dish and it was broken in quarters, now I will have to get a new one and the Microwave is not in use now, not going to take chances putting any other dis in there. I have broken glasses several times and U swear that if could put all the pieces together, I´d end up with a dozen. Sometimes I find pieces of glass months later, under the fridge. I don{t move it often, as you can imagine. I worry a lot about glass, as I love to go barefooted at home. I hope you pick up all the pieces, Janey

I do too. It's amazing how far projectiles of glass travel!

Yes, I have broken clear glasses and those clear pieces of glass are sooo hard to find on the floor. At that point, I tell all my kids to back out of the kitchen and no bare feet or stocking feet allowed in the kitchen until I have had a chance to carefully check over the floor. The worse is breaking a glass in a sink, because in the water, it is really hard to see the broken pieces. I try to pull up the plug with a pair of tongs or very carefully reach in to pull the plug. The best way to pick up mega small pieces of broken glass (that I have discovered) is wiping the floor with a damp paper towel. Make sure there are several layers of paper towels so you don't cut yourself if you do find a piece of broken glass. This is what I have done and a damp paper towel really does the job of picking up those mega small pieces. Certainly better than sweeping with a broom. Glad it wasn't worse. Hope you are able to replace your measuring jug. Have a safe day! :)

That is a good tip my friend, thank you. Yes, I should imagine I will be able to find another Pyrex Measuring Jug in The Range tomorrow. Earlier I made some jelly and I have used the jug in the past for measurements of water..I forget it was no longer around. I had to guess in the end so I'll be annoyed if I've put too much water in the bowl, otherwise the jelly won't set!
