i was just wondering what would happen if we're a US state? do you think china would have the guts to be aggressive in the questioned territory over the south china sea?
i've read some opinions of people online that if the US bases were still here in Olongapo, china would dare enter our territory. if we're a US state, we would have enough military power to evade the intrusion of our land.
what do you think?

Hello iluvusabado, I have been thinking about that too for a long time. to be honest, they didn't have to let us go if they wanted to. otherwise, they wouldn't have problems in terms of oil, and gas supply. in fact, they might even provide a stronger security with the islands that are now in dispute and which China is now bullying all of it's neighbors with. It was their biggest mistake, we could have fought for our rights even though were american citizens. plus, Republicans would have been more dominant unlike their situation now because most filipinos are conservative.the church won't be that influential since we can be more aggressive in our rights. .

It seems that you all want to be American citizens ,and i have nothing to say . If philipin is now a developed country ,never do you want to discuss about this rediculous situation . I think you should think carefully about where you national self-esteem is ?

We still retain the ideals and some culture of the chinese ancestors here, but when it comes to government rule, people is more competent with the free thinking America. No offense to you but the government doesn't show much enthusiasm when it comes to being criticized even by the international community. it's nice to be patriot and nationalist, but remember such ideals can be misinterpreted as racism to others, specially foreigners.
If we become more nationalistic at the extremist level, we might end up being more racist and downgrading others worst than what some chinese, japanese, or even a hongkonger does to filipinos. with the latest situation now a days, I am learning that being too nationalistic is extremely dangerous. we, filipinos chose to be a loving and pleasing people rather than claiming to be a superior race and telling others to be weak..
National self esteem and the right for free speech is definitely both needed. US as we believed here can provide that.

I don't literally find it in my heart right at all in being part of the chinese govt. though we might end up being strong too in the long run but we might loose our being hospitable and that is something hard to do.

yes that is so true, think about if ever we were a US state means we are able to use full military forces of the US. China wouldn't dare to insult Philippines and wouldn't dare to enter the sea territory of our country.

would have been better if the republic of china then did that long ago before the spanish / american or japanese invaded the Philippines. otherwise, we wouldn't be in this trouble with the disputed islands won't we jiangchao? but things happened differently as history intended. though china has been our trade partner for a long time even before the spanish era, wished there was more connection and alliances then. with china being communist, it would be hard to convince the people of the Philippines to be part of Chinese state knowing that our NPA here no longers has much influence.

I don't mean the people are arrogant but your government, friend. Because I don't know if your government is government of the people of government of the few that have power. Because as far as I can see no one will ever tried to comment or criticize your government because they are being apprehended by authorities.
Your government claim all the island along south china sea, where the Philippines, is also part of south china sea. Even do this called south china sea, it doesn't mean that this is belong to china. Even inside the territory of the Philippines, your government intrude and claim it. That area is an economic zone of the Philippines, and part of the province of Zambales. They even want to have a Military drill near the disputed island...and sent military ship into our territory, even if there is a diplomatic talk.
If your government is not arrogant and boastful they should not intrude other territory and claim it then showing military power to threaten the weak country.

I feel sad because am sure the Chinese people doesnt really want that kind of government, but they have their pros and cons. but there's no way we can just generalize the people and blame them because of their government. were in fact, we are more people's republic in the Philippines than china.

As an American this is an interesting conversation. We must be doing something right if other countries want us to annex them! :)
Your best bet would be to do become a territory or commonwealth like Peurto Rico.
Or a defense pact like we currently have with Japan and Taiwan maybe?
You would still retain your culture. Even within the US we have places with different cultures such as the Scots Irsh in the Appalachia Mountians.

i heard about puerto rico and actually that was what inspired me to think about our country being a territory of the united states. we were a commonwealth of the US once until we achieved total independence in july 4, 1946.

Military is just one side of it. As a overseas state, we will have the backing of the Army but we also suffer all the consequence of being an American territory. We will be included in the debt ceiling or economic woes of America. their political system and prevailing attitudes. Also, other cultures will accuse us of not having our own identity . Maybe they will say that we are closet Americans unless we are all naturalized citizens. AT least, we will have only two political parties. that should improve our political system

i also like the two party system in the US. and what's more impressive is that the parties are run by solid principles that it's become a lifestyle.

If we are a US state, we would have used our baby making skills and do a reverse invasion. from colonizing us, we would end up colonizing them. we would easily takeover their population in just few decades. Our ancestors are dumb for deciding to rebel againts American invaders, they didnt know we can took over their country without weapons, without war.

That´s one way of colonising a place, for sure. But you never know how the people that are being conquered will react. They might discover that it is nice to make babies with the conqueror women and it would all end up in yet another mixture of races (which I think it is one of my profound desires as it could mean an end of the world´s wars).

my teacher in high actually joked about this issue. with millions of filipinos scattered around the world, there would be a time where we can rule the whole entire world.

That is exactly what those guys in the muslim extremist in some communities are doing, they believe they don't need to invade to rule the world only to multiply to the point of being dominant and able to protest in that country. some even allow their babies to be born in the US to be future terrorist, which is sad.

Well, if we were a US state then it will be a whole different story now would it. But is it all worth it? We'll lose our independence and our nationalism over some disputed islands. Is that what every Filipino wants? We may even be targeted by the enemies of the US and that won't be a pleasant picture.

Well for the many Filipinos who are dreaming to become a US citizens would not be a problem if we were annexed as one of their states. I think China would not want to to encoroach on US territories. This could be a very good strategic place for them to put a lot of military bases since we are located to many countries that are hostile to them like Vietnam and China, & North Korea.
The main advantage for us natives here would be convenient for us to travel back and forth to Mainland US if that were true. We will perhaps have a much more organized political system than what we have right now and probably we would not be in poverty.

I still need a lot of convincing that being a US citizen is a good thing compared to the passport i have now which is pretty much similar to the priviledges of travel that a US passport can give. When working in Thailand i have seen US travellers intentionally labbeling their luggages to create the impression that they are Canadians so that they can move around more incognito, Americans have a raw deal when travelling around the world especially in troubled spots or even in non controversial areas but makes them enticing targets just merely of the fact that they are Americans easily getting newsworthy media attention or some misguided perception that all americans are rich..
I think i still prefer my own passport acknowledging me as a citizen to the country i was born in and love a lot, guess i am as patriotic as any peace loving, hassle avoiding person is.which is a feature i have over an american passport.

what with all our heroes who fought for independence? the U.S. would think of as more of a liability that an asset. Let's forget all this crap, we are an independent nation now and the U.S. is one of our main or major allies, so let's just leave it at that and get real! Every sovereign nation should protect itself and not depend on others to do that for them, if only our past administrations were not corrupt, it's not too late, Philippine economy is getting stronger and modernization is underway even as we speak, we are Filipinos my friend, a brave and noble race so we better trust in ourselves, if allies want to help then they are most welcome, but to surrender what we are to any nation for me is treason!
