It depends of what you want to do : if you need to deal with large databases or to interface a business information system, java would be better than php. However it needs to load the jvm for every use and can generate a long wait, and java still belongs to Sun, that can choose someday to ask royalties.... php is faster and easier to learn and configure and is the better choice for a simple site. Its documentation is better too.

Both are very useful. A lot of good programmers know more than one programming language. I suggest you start with learning either one and then learn the other once you had good grasp at the first one.

Hi,
When it comes to finding a job as a web developer, PHP is a must-know language. Take a look at freelance websites and you will see that most jobs are for PHP programmers.
I'm a PHP programmer myself and I love it. At first, I don't know why but the code scared me and now I'm extremely happy when I code something in PHP. I say go with PHP but it doesn't hurt to know more than one language.
If you decide to try PHP, take a look at codeigniter or laravel. Great PHP frameworks that can make your life much easier. :)

JAVA, is not just for web developing or websites developing. It has many general purposes. It can create games, graphics, applications and more.
PHP is a language for the server to run, generate HTML dinamicly and send it to the client side to show that html.
With PHP, it is a lot easier to make websites with users who can register, keep their information in a database, using mysql, use some cURL to make some web services. This is what PHP is built for.
Facebook is still based on PHP, but, with the huge complexity of the database. They went to phyton, C++, Java and Erlang for many backend services.

It is difficult to tell. It depends on what for you want to join the course. If you are keen on web applications then you can join PHp.It is much easier to learn. But java is also interesting but not a popular choice for web developers. So you have to decide which course you want to pursue.
