My cousin has a needy Christmas puppy!

My cousin was lucky (or maybe not so lucky) to get a purebred Golden Retriever puppy for Christmas this year. She fell in love with him but you know how it goes - it's like raising another child again. This dog keeps having accidents all the time in the house. My cousin isn't feeling well at the moment - she's been resting in bed lately trying to get better. Well, she got pretty doped up on some pain killers her doctor gave her so she slept a little longer than she should have. Unfortunately for her the puppy didn't wake her up and alert her to the fact that he needed to go outside to go potty. So, he went and had diarrhea all over her house while she slept. She woke up to an awful mess! Poor thing. I think the reason for the diarrhea is that her husband accidentally bought regular dog food and not puppy food. I'm thinking it was too hard to digest or something. Anyways, I know that my husband and kids have been wanting to get a puppy but I am the one who will have to take care of it and I'm just not looking forward to taking care of another baby. Especially if it does anything like this dog did! Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

Puppies are hard to deal with. People don't realize it is as needy as a baby. I would love a dog. I want a common door which is a lot of work as well due to grooming.

Oh yes this is true- having a puppy is like having a new child at home. I have a friend who owns two dogs (chow bear and a shelty). My friend sometimes complains about her expenses. She's like raising two kids studying in a private school. Not to mention the time for taking care of them- from grooming to feeding time.

Yes I know how it is with babies or baby animals. My cousin was so excited about getting him and I guess she forgot how much work it is to take care of a puppy.

Yes, it is like having a baby so please, please don't blame the puppy or punish him in any way. He was probably frightened when that happened to him and didn't know what to do and was trying to get away. Puppies need a lot more looking after than dogs and our cousin should have given the dog to someone to mind when she found she was unwell. Hope things work out and your cousin gets well soon.

When we got our dog, it was very much like having a child. I can remember it quite well. The diarrhea was probably from eating the wrong dog food, ours had the same issue. I feel really bad for your cousin, like she wasn't sick enough. Hope she sticks it out. Its a big decision!

I know she will keep him. The last dog they had lived to be 13 years old. They had to put him down last year because he got really sick, cancer I think. Anyhow, since he had gotten to be so old I guess she forgot how much more work a baby animal can be.

I think he's doing better now. She put him back on the puppy food that he had been eating.

It is sometimes better to wait until after the holidays to actually receive the puppy Christmas present. That way, all the hecticness and craziness and busyiness of Christmas is over and then, the family can focus on looking after a new puppy. Anyways, that is a suggestion for anyone else who is thinking of getting a puppy for the family next Christmas. It is just a lot more calming for the new puppy if there isn't a lot of holiday craziness. So sorry for the mishap, especially when she isn't feeling better. Perhaps check with your puppy's vet as to what kind of puppy food to get for your new puppy. When our family first got a puppy, we bought the cheapest brand of puppy food. Our puppy's vet didn't approve and told us to buy good quality puppy food. He said that a puppy won't need to eat as much as the cheap brands, so that saves money, will not have to go to the bathroom as much, and will be healthier. Cheap puppy and dog food is just 'filler' which isn't healthy for dogs. Now, puppy and dog food is something in which we will spend the money for the highest quality. We wanted our puppy to be healthy and to stay healthy. Hope that everyone, including the new puppy will be back to health soon.

Yes, I hope they both get to feeling better soon too. It sucks to be sick.

It is a lot of work taking care of animals especially when they are young like that. Yeah it could be it that the puppy ate adult food is why it got diarhea. I hope your cousin gets better so that she can care for and train her puppy. I'm still trying to train my dog and she's not a puppy. She is used to being an outside dog and don't know that she is only supposed to go outside for bathrooms and not go to the bathroom where she sleeps.
