Doggy diets?

Remy was 3 when she popped her knee out of socket running after a cat on the porch. She smacked it into a piece of wood and stumbled backwards yelping. She limped for a couple days, not putting any pressure on her knee, until I took her to the vet. Right away they said, she needs surgery. She has a Luxating Patella, meaning her knee joints are not deep enough to keep the knee in place. Well. Surgery? As young as she is? They wanted to schedule her right away, and I declined. Knowing she needs to loose some weight, I am hoping this will fix the problem. I did start her on glucosamine for dogs, right away. When her knee goes out, I double the medicine and baby her, and it seems to help as she is back on her feet in a couple days. Losing weight is hard enough on us, it is even harder to do with a dog. Other than exercise and expensive dog foods, I need some surefire ideas to help her drop the pounds. Have you any diet tricks that worked for your dog? Or have you had experience with this knee issue in the past and can provide some direction? Anything is appreciated.

I am sorry for what happened to Remy. From what I know, a luxating patella needs to be solved with a surgery. There are some dog breeds that are prone to this condition. What breed is Remy?
As for making her loose some weight, let me tell you what my wife tells everybody who is complaining about their fat pets: no dog opens the fridge by herself. It's us who make them fat. Stop giving them any treats, keep them on the strict diet and they won't gain unnecessary weight.
Our dog is a big eater and she gains weight very easy. But my wife is very strict with her diet, so that when she puts on some pounds, she reduced the amount of food so that the dog looses them in a day or so. Of course, she benefits from lots of exercises daily.
What does your dog eat? How much? How often?
How many hours of exercise does she have?

We are hoping with weight loss, she will not be so prone to the knee problems. She has been a chub ever since she was a puppy, her mama the same way. We reduced portion size of her food to 1/8 cup in the morning and evening. She is a sneak, that is her biggest problem. If there is a morsel to be found, she finds it. She's constantly under your feet and begging for food. She is a beagle/terrier mix. She is on Beneful Healthy Weight food. She needs more exercise. She stays with my dad all day and naps, because he has health issues and doesn't get around well. I've been down since September with leg and back issues myself, so she is definitely not getting the exercise she needs. I have vowed to resolve that this Spring!

Hope your Remy feels better, my Boxer had a weight problem and my vet had me to use weight management food, it really helped, I also cut down on the treats I was giving him, hope that the glucosamine will help your Remy.
