Ants die in fabric conditioner or fabric softner

My aunt's house had some ants problem before, especially if you throw a sweet food or wrapper in their trash bin. It will only take a minute or two for the ants to smell and march all the way to the trash bin. But she noticed that fabric softener or conditioner can repel ants. She just spray it to the area that has full of ants and it is either that they will be dead or gone. I was wondering, what could be the reason behind this? what could be that ingredient of fabric con? Any idea guys?

Wow! You just gave me a brand new idea. Im pestered too of undying ants here at home, and mind they are of different colors and sizes. I tried a home made insecticide but I myself hate the smell. So maybe I should try fabric conditioner shortly.

Must be the chemicals. They dry of drowning and suffocation from the fabric conditioner and water mix. What we do in this case is to draw a line on the wall or floor where we don't want ants to go using a chalk.

Yeah, its like they die because of suffocation. I tried chalk before but ants are very tricky, they will search for another path just to reach their target food.

oh geesh we have a lot of ants here too!! what my mom does is to spray them with a tile cleaning liquid, or toilet cleaner liquid... the ants when sprayed will die, yes because they are drowned and they die because of the chemical perhaps. That should probably the same thing as what you witnessed when your aunt puts in fabric conditioner. i have not tried this, but i think when the conditioner dries out... and the smell all gone, they will still be swarming over the trash...

Here's what we do, I'll 2 to 3 tablespoon of fabric con to a hair spray container and add water. You should try it if you want them not to loiter around your house especially in the trash bins.

this is not new since ants die from any chemicals that can irritate them. I think fabcon has a strong smell that is why ants die when you spray to it.
