Is boxing a martial art?

This is called the "sweet science" and it takes skill, a good instinct and quick wits to win some people spend their lives trying to master it or do it for a long time and it does take a lot of discipline.
But for all it is. what usually comes to mind when you speak of martial arts is usually karate, tae kwon do etc., boxing almost never comes to mind.
Can you consider this a martial art or a martial arts discipline or is this just a sporting event that people do and eventually retire from?

Of course it's a martial art. Martial art is defined as the art of weaponless self defense which is what boxing is.
