What kind of computer? What's the processor speed, how much RAM, HD space?
Do you meet the system requirements to run Windows 8?
See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/system-requirements

You have enough RAM for 8, but it is good you are checking to see if your computer meets the rest of the requirements. If a computer doesn't meet or exceed the minimum requirements of an OS, it will definitely bog your computer down and keep it from running smoothly.

I've ever experienced the same computer problem as you. I don't want to think hard to find out the problem. Some of my friends it can be because of the too low RAM. They asked me to upgrade my computer's RAM. But nothing changed. I decided to reinstall my Windows, and It was successfully. But, before you reinstalling your Windows, back up your data first. May this help you.
