The simple word "diet" has a negative connotation..

The word diet is of Greek origin and means "A matter of Living." Our daily diet is how we nourish ourselves. I can say "I eat a healthy diet." Why then does it have such a negative connotation? Is it because we think of a "diet" as something we go "on and off?" Maybe I should just stick to a "healthy lifestyle." What are your thoughts?

Healthy sounds better than diet anyway. To me a diet is for someone who needs to lose 100 pounds. How is your day there?

I think so too. I also think I've been accustomed to calling it a healthy lifestyle because that's the way I initially want to eat the rest of my life. Sometimes, those changes are not as easily made as one might think.

I've actually never thought of a diet as being something that was negative. I believe that a big part of the reason that I've never thought in that way is because of the fact that I've been a person that believes in moderation in those things that we eat as opposed to being a person that feels like we should exclude a lot of things from our intake. I believe that moderation is a much smarter way of controlling what we eat and also finding the right balance in our lives.

That's a smart way to look at it Dorann. The thing that bothers me is when I try to eat healthier or eat a better diet (no diet pop, no sweets, etc..because they are not good for us and are all cancer causing agents) that people will say..."Öh are you on a diet?" Truth is I just really want to live a healthier lifestyle.

I think that if we call a diet what we eat each day, we can talk of good and bad diets. Nowadays people want to slim down after overeating and living a sedentary life (I include myself) and star different sorts of "diets", many of which mean starvation and body unbalance. Those diets (ways of eating) have, for me, negative connotations. But a well balanced diet that includes some reasonable exercise, is always positive.

I do think the same as you do. Although diet seems to be a positive word, but it has been commonly know as a "restriction" in eating to prevent increase in weight. I think that a healthy lifestyle sounds better.

Right, when we think of "diet" we automatically think of restriction. There are very few foods we are actually eliminating from our everyday diet when we are trying to live a healthier lifestyle.

The word " Diet" has been used the wrong way. People think that if they follow a " Diet" it is linked to the way we think if you think slim it'll help to get that direction, the rest is up to you to stay have a good way of living ( Eat well, good sleeping habits, execises,no smoking, don't stay infront the computer all day long ect....).

The wrong way. Diets are something we follow. People think of diet as restriction when actually a diet is a way of life. It's living.

I do think it's weird. Maybe because diet has now this other meaning, about a diet or food schedule which helps you lose weight... and some people constantly think about it, so they automatically mean diet, when someone talks about just what you eat, without any implications...

I agree, it is just weird. I like "healthy diet" as well as a healhier lifestyle. To me they both imply the same thing.

hi there arieles. i think 'diet' gets a bad rap becuase it is usually associated with restricting one's intake of food and drinks. i agree with you that going on a diet doesn't necessarily mena of depriving one's self and going hungry. it shoudl be takne into eating healthily. cheers and happy mylotting!!!
