Had my first odesk interview for an interesting VA job

Philippines
January 14, 2013 8:45am CST
I was so excited about that job post for a lot of reasons. One, the employer is from Singapore, so the working hours would just be the same as in the Philippines. I don't have to be awake at night. Next, the job entails creating worksheets for Math and Sciene, because the employer is a teacher who's too busy to handle everything on his own. And, the other tasks listed were also challenging but fun to do. I was the first interviewee and the guy was fun to talk to, and he gave me a mini test which is related to the worksheet creation task. I gave it my best shot, because I really like to get that job. Only, I had trouble using the software he required me to use, which was Skydrive by Microsoft. Good thing I have background with Googledocs, which is similar. I really hope he'd pick me. I swear he'll never regret such decision.

Yes, please do try out oDesk. But don't give up easily if you do not get any job at first. Keep applying for jobs until you land on one and be sure to get a good feedback. Most employers look for good feedback before employing. Good luck!

Neelia, this employer I got is very generous. He considers my situation being a mother of two. I do hope you'll find a good one, too.

That is a good start! I am keeping my fingers crossed for you. But do try to apply on other vacancies as well, as back up, just in case. That was what I did when I started with odesk. I wasn't really aware of the virtual assistant job, so I was applying most of the time as a telemarketer. But along the way, I found out that I am really not fit for that kind of job, although I really did my best to give positive leads to my employer. After my stint as a telemarketer, I switched to data entry, lead generation and then finally the virtual assistant position. It was fun, really!

Congratulations! The pay was not always the same. Some employers are willing to pay as much as $5/hour and some just $3/hour. But I sure had fun. It was something new to me back then and so I was so enthusiastic to learn a lot. You could just imagine how crazy I was almost to the point of being obsessed with work and yet I only knew so little about computers! I learned a lot really. I hope you can meet a very nice employer that would hire you and give you a contract just the way I had mine.

Wow, you have a wide experience in online jobs. Was it paying you well? By the way, I did get the job. He emailed me about it earlier. This is a low paid job, but I'm taking it anyway, because it'll be a good step to getting good feedback and experience, since it's just my first time. Plus, the uniqueness of the job description seems really fun and challenging for me.

$5 per hour is really good. Especially, if it's a full time gig. If I find such job and employer, I would stick to it and make them feel like God so they'd keep paying me. Sadly, my first job is not very lucrative. I do hope my employer would think of increasing my pay if he gets more satisfied with my services.

Oh that is great that you were given an opportunity to be interviewed. I hope you'll get the job. I have registered at Odesk a long long time ago. But I don't really know how to apply for a job or how to it. I hope you can help me. Can I invite you here as my friend?

Wow! Good for you. I have been trying my luck in oDesk too but still unlucky. Hahaha! I have applied to few jobs, NO, actually, a LOT of jobs in oDesk but I keep getting turned down either because the job has ended/closed or they prefer full time applicants. I'm currently looking for part-time jobs online and I'm hoping oDesk will be the answer to my needs. It's been more than two weeks now since my friend and I have been trying to land part-time jobs in oDesk. I'm still hopeful though. I really hope I'd find that part-time job soon. Or maybe you can refer me incase your employer is looking for part-timers. ;)

Yes, I am currently working on oDesk as well and I have ongoing work from my present employer who is a lawyer. He even gave me a bonus for Christmas. It would be great if I can get 2 more employers who are like him.

I started applying a couple weeks ago, and submitted about 20 applications. I'm lucky to have been shortlisted twice. This time, I got the job. Yipee!!! I'll see what I can do about your request. Although, that job was for full time, and he was even concerned that I have 2 kids to look after and that it may get in the way to accomplishing my tasks. I did assure him that I'm going to take full responsibility over my situation and that it's not going to be any trouble to the signed contract. Hey Jlyn, so you're currently working oDesk jobs?

Thanks, Camylle. I hope I will soon find a job that will pay me as much as I used to get in the corporate world. It's a long shot, and I don't know if it's possible, but anything close to it would really be great. So, what kind of work are you into? VA, data entry, sales?

Its really exciting to venture to new areas like online jobs. I started signing up in odesk way back 2008 when i just resigned from my last job and wanted to be a full time mother. I never was that serious with odesk yet but last December of 2012 my sister told my to apply and update my profile in odesk so that her boss can hire me as her counterpart in Customer Service Relations. I did what i was told to do and lucky enough i got hired, now i am in my 1st month with my odesk job and although my work time is US time that means i have to be awake for 8 hours when everybody here around me is sound asleep. I grabbed this job because i like working with people and assisting them, compared to call center environment, my odesk job is very simple and pressure-free.. not to mention the pay is slightly higher. I really plan to apply more for future jobs in odesk and i am loving it. Goodluck to your first odesk job and goodluck to me too!

Thanks for sharing. Wow, that does sound like a fun job to have. Aside from just being at home, you said the job is not that stressful. I mean, what more can you ask for! I hope I can also find a good paying job soon.

I have been with oDesk since October. I mostly go for English-Spanish and Spanish-English translation. What's tough is most of those jobs require native speakers. I have done transcription there as well. But my repeating contracts there is really about content writing for a website. Basically I have to spin an article or write something from the information given to me by my client. Interviews are cool. The more you apply the more chances of getting a job soon. Just don't apply when there are already 28 applicants or more as it would be difficult to get noticed.

congrarulation to you, dear. i registered in odesk few weeks ago and i havent a job to apply till today. it because i have no confidence to aplly some. i think i have ability in writing something in English. but im not a native. then i tried to take a look to some vacancies under writing categories. but, oh gosh, the vacancies have hard requirements. i think my ability doesnt meet all of vacancies there! even some authors require native only. it really dumped me to the bottom. then i kill my spirit to get jobs in odesk. so congratulation to you and i hope you're the one getting that job..#thumb..

Thanks. Yeah, I do hope this employer will be satisfied with my service. He is very nice and easy to deal with. Although, the start pay is really low, but there's more about the job that I like to experience than just waiting for the pay. The interview was thru Skype. And, since you asked, I just have to share with you a story behind this. I was really expecting a video interview, so I prepared a lot. I bathe early in the morning, put on a decent looking blouse, put some powder, blush and lipstick so I don't look pale. Little did I know, that it was just a plain simple phone interview, and we didn't really get to see each other.

Well, hope you got the job.I kno the feeling and its totally exciting.I have started at Odesk only last October.I did not try the site earlier as i did not have much information about site.Plus i am also a newbie in many ways in online world.Well,i tried elance and other such sites but nothing has worked for me till date expect Odesk.I struggled a lot to get my first job and well was happy to get a 5 of 5 in my first feedback.Unfortunately though i did a good job, the next client did not give me a good rating. There could have been some miscommunication but then still i have a feedback above 4.This was first time i used any site for freelance working.I tried applying many jobs and well according to interests but it has not been easy. Some fo the jobs are at night time and i am not looking forward to them. And some are having aggressive timelines which with given things are not possible.Looking forward to earn well in Odesk in 2013 though i have not got any good ones in Odesk from January.Good to know you liked the things.Hopefully things would be better.Enjoy your time!

That is good. Wish you get hired. As for me, someone want to interview with me on Odesk. Just once for almost how many years no one notice me and now, someone wants to interview with me but the problem is Its too late. I have doing myLot more and Fanbox than to concentrate again on Odesk. Besides, I did not know all the feature on Odesk and I forgot all of them.

Congratulations to you jure! We could really earn online if we will just be serious about it. In my case before, I was like, I join almost all earning site that they say and it seems that I have no focus. As of now, I had abandoned all those sites and my blog too. It is only myLot that I have now but I don't consider myLot as online earning site. MyLot is part of my routine. I mean, my focus now isn't really working online. Maybe I will go back to it when some things are settled here in our home. Right at this moment, I just want to sleep. This unusual cold weather makes me sleepy all the time. That was out of the topic already. I wish you the best in all your endeavours!
