SIN tax, is it already in place?

My husband was surprised that the cigarette price has already gone up. He didn't think the SIN tax law is already in place. If it is, that explains, why a lot of people were buying reams of cigarettes yesterday at the supermarket, to hoard and at least delay the effect of the new law on their well loved vices.

I believe it started last Jan 1 if I am not mistaken. I am not at all affected by these since I am not a smoker or a drinker at all. I hope this would curb some habits down or at least lessen their usage because of this.

Right, I do hope so, too. My husband smokes a lot and drinks only occasionally, but I really hope he'll at least cut down on the cigs.

I know more people who are below middle class who are so in to drinking and smoking. I guess they should be the first to withdraw from these vices, otherwise, they'd have nothing to eat. They are also the ones who can't really afford hospital bills, whenever they get sick because of their bad habits. So, at least, this law could start with those people.

I am not directly affected by the sin tax law since no one in my home smokes... but i hope we will all be directly affected by revenues this law will bring our country's coffers... i heard that this will be used to improve the health care programs of the government... so if that happens then we... the average Filipinos... would no longer hesitate to go to government hospitals to seek medical care... instead of those private ones that charge too much...

Oh, that's good to know. If they will use the tax to improve health care, then a lot of Filipinos will really benefit. I just hope they'll be true to that.

Yes. It was effective way back in the New year. How effective this law remains to be seen.

That's right. I do hope this will really help change the smoking habits of Filipinos and thus reduce risk of smoke-related diseases, and drinking, too.

Sin tax? well is it good or bad? for me, its good for the Philippine government and bad for those smokers and liquor drinkers.
