Vitamins

I keep vitamins in stock in my medicine cabinet. My usual daily vitamin routine consists of a women's daily multivitamin with iron and 1000mg Vitamin C. If I'm ill, I might take an extra 1000mg Vitamin C. When I eat, I try to compose my plate for its vitamin content, such as leafy greens and broccoli for B vitamins, orange vegetables like yams and carrots for beta carotene and tomatoes for extra vitamin C. My grandmother taught her children and grandchildren to balance their meals by checking for something each of green, orange and red. I think she had learned that in college. She used to also have her children take a spoonful of Cod Liver Oil for Vitamin A each morning, followed by a glass of orange juice for Vitamin C. These days, I would sooner take it in capsule form than taste that stuff. But now I'm working on completing my transition to a vegan lifestyle, so I cannot have vitamins derived from animal products. However, I must say that my grandmother's children have enjoyed far better health for most of their lives than the majority of their contemporaries. This extends to her grandchildren, as well, from her children carrying on the vitamin-based foundation she built. She would probably credit a substantial part of this record to vitamins. I would tend to agree with her.

Oh that's good. I used not to take vitamins and not eating veggies but now I've changed my eating life style too and glad that me and hubby are both taking and keeping vitamins now just making sure that all vitamins we take are good and not going to expired anytime soon;-)

Hey there, k2k and thanks for joining in. I'm glad to hear you and your husband are woring together as a team to take care of your health. Checking expiration dates on vitamins is a great idea. Which vitamins are you two taking? Daily? Extra C? Cheers!

That's a great plan, k2k! Yes, the current flu is one of many viruses making the rounds lately. The worst part reputedly is the high degree of contagion, although it's no fun to have them, either. Hopefully those boosting their immune systems will reap the benefits of that wisdom. Cheers!

I think what you did so far is perfect and you don't need to change your style of living. Switching to vegan style may have it's benefits, but from what I've read it's not that useful, it can even be dangerous. You will, indeed, lose all the benefits that vitamins of animal products will give you, basically everything useful. No artificial substance can replace the good natural vitamin D in an egg, for example. Castor oil is also essential and you'll have to lose it, too.
I don't know, I would think over and over again everything before I make that huge step.

Hello, iva, and thanks for responding. While I appreciate your perspective on the nutritional benefits of animal products and was raised with those beliefs, I am firm in my vegan goals. I'm certain that with networking and research will come the wisdom to be vegan and healthy all at once. Cheers!

It sounds like your grandmother was an incredibly smart woman and you should definitely be thankful for having someone that raised you in such a healthy manner. I love the idea of having a balance on your plate of something green, orange, and red. That way you can get incredibly important things for your body such as Chlorophyll, Beta Carotene and Lycopene.
Supplements and vitamins are great but we should really try to get as much nutrients as possible from our diet because that is the best way for our bodies to digest those minerals and vitamins. I also have taken fish oil and agree with you that capsules would probably be better. I had some lemon flavored cod liver oil and man that flavor just really sticks on your taste buds for way too long. lol.
Anyways I don't take too many specific singular vitamins, I take a lot of supplements though that are formulated for specific purposes like inflammation, men's health, mental ability, longevity, and so forth. Most of these have vitamins and minerals included in them as well as herbal formulas to help with what they were made for. I have been missing a daily multi-vitamin for a while though but when I do have enough money for multi-vitamins I like to buy my vitamins whole food. Whole food vitamins come from all food-like resources allowing your body to better utilize the nutrients contained.
Much longevity to you and yours, hopefully we can all spread the beneficial effects of a healthy lifestyle.

I dont really take vitamin supplements. I am afraid that I might just inject myself with so much toxic and will manifest later on as you grow old. I would rather take vegetables and fruits where the real nutrients that our body needs come from.

Hello Danzylop, and thanks for joining in. Teo is right. It's a personal choice whether or not to take vitamin supplements. You are also right, that the produce you eat in the form of fruits and vegetables can be a great source of nutrients, as well. Cheers!

Nice, you need to be very observant to your health. What you feel and what you think is right. The vitamins as a supplement is also nice and is good for health but they are already proven before they are brought for public consumptions. The feeling you acquire in taking vitamin supplements is something that must also be considered to avoid any psycho effect in your feeling. Sometimes our positive approach to the vitamins we are taking is also of great help

All fruits have vitamins and not only vit. C. Bananas have vit. B as well. Vitamine D is in sunlight also in winter so do go out, it's the best way to get it.
Real butter has vitamins too (you do not eat an animal for that). Iron you find in spinach and calcium is also in tablets (made of plants). Nettle, mint etc have all kind of vitamins as well. Garlic, onions, red (green, yellow) pepper are healthy. So are nuts and seeds. It's hard to get a lack of it even if you do not eat animals. BTW I do find the amount of vit C you use(d) very high. I wonder why you take take/took that much since the body is not able to store it, you will pee it out. Olive oil is very healthy too btw. Iodine also (which you can eat, breath in (sea air) or get in via the skin. Cod liver oil my granny gave to us as well, can't remember I did really find it that terrible. But it's a long time ago I did taste it.

Yeah, sometimes experience is the best teacher. We only need to be observant for things to work as expected.

I try to take vitamins everyday. It's usually part of my morning routine to take multivitamin pills each day. I think it's very good for my health because I have noticed I have becoming sick less often. But that also could be contributed to the fact that I have tried exercising more often now. But it doesn't hurt to take vitamins to help fortify your immune system.

Vitamins are good supplements for us as most of the food
are now processed food or has lost its vitamins and nutrients.
My mum also advised us to take cod liver oil but I don't quite
like the taste. However, I know the importance of vitamins to
our health. So, I normally have multi-vitamins and Vitamin C for
my family. Talking about supplement, I think I better take my
collagen pill now. Thanks for reminding!

Welcome, Irene, and thanks for responding. I wonder when that cod liver oil thing first originated? 19th or 18th Century or beyond? It sure seems to have been around and made its way into the hearts of many. Cheers!

a pleasant day belindayhughes,
before i am taking my vitamins religiously. as i always make it sure that i drink it regularly. however due to some budget constraint, i seldom drink it now. as there were times, i was not able to buy one for my consumption. but, i make it sure that i replaced it with some fruits.

Greetings, airasheila, and thanks for the great post. That's too bad about the budget constraints. It's unfortunate that healthy things can sometimes be out of our reach. Hopefully, the world economy will ease and we'll find affordable approaches to our health aide preferences. Meanwhile, have you considered sprouting? Highly nutritious, inexpensive and easy to do. Just get some alfalfa or other sprouting seeds, put in a canning jar, add water, replacing the solid lid w a square of metal mesh fabric and screw on the rim. Soak at first, then rinse daily, drink the rinse water and eat the sprouts after the 3d day. Cheers!

i never take vitamins daily and even though, i have some bottles of vitamins here such as the same with what you mention. i still forget to take it. food we eat is not enough since they get not to stay or absorb by the body for so long. so we need to take the vitamins in pill or capsule form on order to achieve the maximum benefits. so it tired me to take vitamins daily and i need to get reminded constantly. i am about to make a change in my habit and focus on the important thins that benefit me and that includes not forgetting to take my vitamins supplement daily.

Greetings, fantasticbabe, and thank you for joining this discussion. It is indeed easy to forget important things that benefit us in the hurly burly of life. Perhaps putting a reminder on your phone or placing the vitamins in a conspicuous place among your routine might help. Best wishes!

I used to take 1000 mg. of vitamin C everyday but I stopped when I heard someone having allergic reactions to the vitamin. I am not taking Conzace, composed of 500 mg. vit. C, E, and zinc. I just buy that over the counter, I didn't go to a doctor for that, but I just asked from the pharmacy's clerk.

Good afternoon, Cutie, and thanks for posting to this convo. It's true that it's possible to have allergic reactions to things. But just because someone else has a reaction does not automatically mean all others will. Doing your own research with recognized resources is always a good idea when making your own decisions. Best wishes!

I take vitamin C too everyday. My mom told us to take care of our health since we're all working. Its not only vitamin C. She also includes for the bones and there are also vegetables vitamins since we're not eating too much vegetables. It seems that grandmother knows best, he he... I think they know a lot of things when it comes to health.

taking vitamins supplement capsules are really great but i still choose to eat my "vitamins" daily. i really agree with your vegan lifestyle idea because veggies can really do wonders in our body and can really boost are immune system. since i cannot take ascorbic acid due to my high stomach acidity, i make sure that i ate at least one fruit a day to sustain my vitamin needs and a lot of green veggies for fiber :)

Welcome, jamie, and thanks fo the wonderful response. A friend of mine on Twitter is trying an alkalinizing diet with great success. Maybe that would be an idea for your high acidity. The point of most medical traditions is, after all, to help the body regain balance. Cheers!

My daily food consumption consists of meat and vegetables plus lots of different fruits like banana, papaya, pine apple, tomato etc. That's where my vitamins come from. It's not as practical as taking vitamin pills and tablets, but my family and I just enjoy the eating process together :)

The only supplements I take is calcium tablets because I am deficient in calcium and cod liver oil tablets, because I do a lot of strenuous workouts at the gym I need to keep my joints lubricated as they take a lot of pressure from the training that I do. One of old doctors said that Centrum was good, as he took them. Apparently Centrum has all the extra vitamins from A to Z.

Hey jenny, and thank you. Diet is indeed an important consideration and personal responsibility. My family used to grow their own food, my parents being raised on family owned farms. Now, the next generation, my sister and I are working on growing our own food once again, The food tastes better and could very well have more nutrients and fewer chemicals than what is offered in stores. Cheers!

Hola maria, and gracias for the generous response! Some of my friends are fond of getting your vitamins through your food, rather than taking supplements. Extra vitamin C is always a good idea. I've read that it does everything from converting fat to energy to natural antihistamine to strengthening blood vessel and cell walls to boosting immunity and improving your mood. Cheers!

From the point of view of how you presented your topic it seem' that your right in your decision in following the footstep of your grandmother. In discovering if not proving that vitamins is effective or not researchers always go for an experiment using other as a training ground of the effectiveness of their new products. In your case you are a witnessed to what can be construed as a result of a true experience of taking vitamins. However I also advice you to follow the advice of your doctor as the case maybe for they are the authority.

Welcome, teo, and thank you for your kind response. It is good in most cases to consult a physician. Unfortunately, I haven't found many yet who share my perspective on natural health. I know they're out there, and their numbers are increasing. I just haven't run into them personally yet. When I do, I'll find the right doctor for me. Cheers!
