my daughter wants to join acting classes. we had to fill out a form and then it goes into a hat and they draw out 12 names only to join the class. i guess it's fair but i really hope she makes it in. She has been wanting this for a while. I'm actually glad there are no auditions though. I hate pinning kids against others and competing for a spot.

Wow that's pretty bad that they only have twelve slots open for students. What grade is your daughter in? I'm assuming she's probably younger because most drama classes that I have been in had around twenty students in both middle school and high school. It really is unfortunate how many great specialized classes kids are missing out on nowadays because of budget cuts and things like that. Children no longer get to take classes like shop, home economics, music, art, and drama. The same classes that actually motivate kids to go to school and the same classes that make students happy to be in are the ones that are getting cut. I hope that your daughters makes it in because drama is a great class to allow children to really get in touch with their creativity. I wish that it wasn't decided by drawing names out of a hat but like you said a competition really isn't that great either especially if kids are at a younger age.

she is in grade 4. Actually this school does a lot for their students considering the other schools in town can't afford to do any special programs. My daughter has never had so many activities. they offer swimming lessons, track and field, music, choir, and she goes to games night once a week after school. I am really impressed of the activities this school offers.

I hope your daughter gets to be chosen. But what if her name wasn't in the list? Isn't there any other place where she can join?

poppoppop[111 hi I do hop;e your daughter gets chose as you say she really wants it so bad, I kind of hate auditions for kids too and specially those beauty pageants using little girls. Some I nave seen looked like baby W.h.o.r.e.s as they were dressed like street walkers in my neighborhood tummies bare and short short skirts and make up. I felt just horrid seeing what those moms were putting these little kids through. One was tired and mom was cross and the child was tired and wanted to go home and lay down. She looked like she was only four years old.I think a lot of little oness are pnly doing it to please mom.

Yeah, competition is hard on kids. Is this a free program? Are there other programs that she can get into if she doesn't get into this one?

Good luck to her, I hope she gets picked. I think it is a good system, that way no kids get left out because of performance. Everyone gets a fair chance to get in, and the class stays small enough that they can be taught well.

For little kids, I also don't like them compete for slots for something that they want to do. At least on the draw-type of selection, it is easily understood and can be easily explained to young kids without having to ask their questions on whether they're good enough or the other kid is better than they are. Just pure luck and fair selection done by chance. Good luck for you and your daughter, I hope her name gets picked.

I know what you mean. If I were your daughter, the competition would totally turn me off, and I would not want to be in the class. It would not be me giving up because I had no faith in myself, it would be me saying I'm not going to lower myself to the rest of the shallow people competing for the slots.

I don't think it's a fair decision, especially if a really talented person gets locked out because of blind luck - they might be so desperate that they won't try again, even if they could do amazing things later. I'd rather there were auditions. People should learn that life is not always fair, and there is disappointment and things that don't go the way we like it. And it's better to learn this at an early stage, rather than keeping kids in a bell jar, because if they step out to capital letter life, and only experience this then, it would be a much bigger shock and trauma.
