It's true! In the news today, a fossicer with a metal detector found a nuggest worth nearly $300000 in the old Goldfields of Ballarat:

Would you do it, just like they did in the goldrush days of the 1850s? A chance to leave paid work & be your own master? Or would you speculate on / buy up on property there instead? Or start a business there? Ballarat is no backwater these days, it's a reasonably large regional centre:

It looks like the pendulum has swung back the other way again in the bust-boom cycle that history seems to show down here. When times couldn't get much worse, there's bound to be something that comes along to get us out of it.

It would be tempting. I don't work anymore so I am always available. But after seeing the TV show, Deadwood, I would be leery. Some of those gold seekers can be ruthless!

Not the most pleasant way to pass our time anymore. Gold is so cheap at the moment, it's better just to buy the stuff!

Well might have given some hair-brained scheme like gold prospecting a go before I married not that I have any experience even remotely useful for this field but thanks for the offer of hospitality
all the best, urban

A "working holiday" on a tourist visa? Oh no - you don't need a visa to come here & yes, a passport should do it! Urban could tour around Australia funded by his first find! Do you have any background in geology? Or maybe a metal detector? Have you ever used one before?

Nope..I would not..at least not at this stage of my life..In fact, I would wait for others to rush out for that gold, and when other things lost some of their demand, I would start picking them up so that these would do eventual catch up, and gold would lose some of its sheen due to its abundance. lol

That makes good business sense too! Very clever.
Would you consider opening a business in Ballarat supporting miner's needs? Maybe even an Indian Grocery Store or Indian Restaurant there to support all the people from India coming over to search for gold? I have seen on MyLot many of your countrymen wanting to buy gold as an investment, so maybe there's a good chance they will "up stakes" & try their luck down here?
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to your too... hope you are well.

Honestly Vegan..no. :)
I am not a great one for moving out to another nation. Even when I was young, I didnt particularly find much comfort in that thought. :)
Yes, my countrymen are just nuts about gold, god knows it doesnt make sense at all. lol
But then...they are steeped in religion. We Indians rank perhaps on top of gold importers of the world. Right? :) You know where to market your stuff then..lol
Frankly it is very very silly. Gold has become 10 times since banks in European nations had started selling them. But logically, I see pretty limited usage of this stuff. Traditionally, it was a different issue. Now we have shares ETFs, and many other vehicles that offer equally good, if not better returns. :)
