Not sure if any of you are a fan of the advice column "Dear Abby" where I am a real fan and follower who has read almost all of her write ups and learned so much from this columnist. Pauline Friedman Phillips, who wrote the long-running "Dear Abby" advice column that was followed by millions of throughout the world, has died after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was 94.
I first stumbled into her column when I was participating in a student exchange program to Hawaii 16 years ago. I was actually going through a confusing time growing up and I remembered her advising a temperamental lady where she said this "People who fight fire with fire usually end up with ashes" and "The less you talk, the more you're listened to", I was so spellbound by her words that I became her fan immediately. Over the years, I would ask my friends overseas to collect paper cuttings of her columns to be sent to me via post mail. When the internet came into the scene, I then subscribe her online version of "Dear Abby" column and followed till this day.
Over the years, I have collected a number of her quotes on various issues which I have kept to this day where I thought it would be good to share this and remember her by.
Character
The best index to a person's character is how he treats people who can't do him any good.
Religion/Church
The church is not a museum for saints it's a hospital for sinners.
Upbringing
If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.
Wisdom
Wisdom doesn't automatically come with old age. Nothing does -- except wrinkles. It's true, some wines improve with age. But only if the grapes were good in the first place.
Life
Fear less, hope more. Eat less, chew more. Talk less, say more. Hate less, love more, and never underestimate the power of forgiveness.
You may want to share some of her words that you have remembered deeply and hold fast to, here. Or, you may want to share your experiences with her columns. Lastly, I want to say that she will be missed by all.

Not surprising when her column is being printed in more than 1400 newspapers around the world and not forgetting some of the popular magazines as well.
I have been following her column online since the emergence of the internet and if you'd like you can check on the link below.

I've read her twin sister's column before but just could not find it to be as relate as Dear Abby. Sadly, her sister passed on earlier than her due to cancer but I learned that their final years were happier ones.
Since her Alzheimer's, her daughter had been helping her manage the column and I hope that she will continue managing this wonderful column after her passing. Let's keep our fingers crossed on this one.

There are many quotes and very down to earth practical advices I have read and collected over the years. I believe she is basically a good and caring person where despite her declining condition did not give up on her work. Her daughter like her good nature self actually followed in her footsteps and continued with the column.
I like her advices where it has guided me during my teens and married life as well. I hope that her daughter will still continue with the "Dear Agony" column, otherwise the column will go with her.

Having read a few of these advice columns all over, I don't see any of them near Dear Abby which seems to relate to me more. I think you can call this personal on my part and I really grew with her column.
It is sad lost but I am optimistic that her daughter would carry on from here.

I just came across the article about her passing away. For years I would read her column when I brought the paper while going to work each day. I loved her column and her advise that she would give too millions. She had such a great wit about her and it was usually all logical answers and sometimes tough love advise but it was her truth and she will now be missed by many. What a shame to die of such a disease when she had so much knowledge within herself. Unbelievable!

Nice to know that you are one of her readers as well and like you I would collect her columns through newspaper cuttings from my friends abroad. But since the emergence of the internet, I got to read them more regularly at the address below. I understand that the column is still active where it is being managed by her daughter.
I know that her twin sister writes for Ann Landers but I feel that I could relate more with her column than that of her sister's. I hope that the advice column will still continue, otherwise it will really be sad.
