I just wanted to bring everyone up to date. I talked to the adult Ed teacher and she said they really needed ESL volunteer. I will be going to the school to sit in on a class on Tuesday. The teacher has lots of volunteers and needs more. I'm just really excited about it. I'll be working from 9 till 12 noon. She wanted to know if I could work nights and I said no because I can't drive at night.
Wish me luck. I feel this is a true gift to be able to give to others. I believe I will also be learning a lot from my students.
I don't know where this might lead. I won't get paid, but I will be useful and get satisfaction from helping people.
Your thoughts?

I wish you all the luck. This is a true gift and even though you won't be paid you will get other rewards and this could lead to other things that might pay you. You just never know. I am really excited for you. Being useful and helping people is a grand thing. I bet your daughter will be proud of you too.

Thank you Celticeagle. My adopted mom is so happy she called it a gift too. She said "you sound like my Charlene now!" I can't wait to see some of my old instructors. If there is ever a paying job in education I might apply for it, but for now I'm happy to volunteer.

Yes thanks. It's going to be very good for me. I will be learning something that would go good on a resume too.

Thanks Bar. I'm so excited that I will have a purpose. I will work with people who can't even speak English, and I will see them grow into confident English speakers, readers and writers. I'm sure I will learn just as much from them.

That is really great.
I am still looking for a volunteer opportunity in this area. I thought I had one set up, but something went wrong with the scheduling. I think that I may try again to connect with the person in charge, though. If that doesn't pan out, there are a few other things I can check on.

sounds good dear PQ but how are you going to get there and back home again? Knowing you have general problems with getting transportation I worry a lot about you.

Hi Ricki. I wouldn't want to volunteer at night anyway. I have a home to take care of. I don't want to neglect it. I'd rather just work till noon.

It's a way to get on with my life. I now have the car to drive, so that makes a big difference.

This is awesome, PQ! I'm so happy for you. If this works out well, after awhile you may be able to find a position doing this exact thing and get paid for it. Experience is experience, paid or not, so someone down the road may see what you've been doing and decide that you are perfect for a paid job.
Still, doing this on a volunteer basis is terrific for your self-esteem. It gives you something to look forward to each day. It gets you up and moving. It keeps your mind active. There are so many positive perks to this type of volunteer work.
Good luck! I know you'll do very well.

Thanks Mentalward. I was thinking the same thing about experience. My SIL's mother is a retired teacher. She said you never know where this could lead.

I would be willing to be a volunteer too on anything that I think I can do to be of help to others. It is a nice feeling to help and share what you have in your own little way. You are right that you will also learn from the people with you around.
I myself had attended a ESL but it is called Community Language Specialization Program under our local government last October of 2012. I did learned a lot and it enhanced my english skills. After graduation, we did receive a certificate of achievement or certificate of completion. You can have both certificate if you are good and you will be recommended to work in a call center that have accounts from USA countries. Luckily, I got both certificates but I didn't work in the company. I didn't accept the job offer because of the time working. Since US and my country have different time frame, our time of work will be from 8pm to 6am. We call that graveyard shift.
I hope to hear more about your voulunteer work. I know you will be a great teacher and you will be a big help to your students.

I hope so. My former teacher in adult Ed said I would be perfect for this job. I have so much respect for people who learn other languages. I cannot speak any other language but English. I would be lost if I had to learn another language. That's why I admire everyone who had English as their second language.
