Give up your last dime?

I was in the store today and I had little more than exact change for what I needed to buy. I am broke in a major way right now. But the lady behind me started screaming that she had lost her dime. So asked her if she needed a dime. I gave it to her. She did give me back a penny. Then she mentioned that it was her daughter's birthday and I saw that she had a coloring book. Now, I hope that four-year-old little girl got more than a coloring book for her birthday. I didn't even see a new box of crayons. As I walked out of the store, I thought to myself that I should have dug for some change and bought the little girl a piece of candy or something. I wish I would have done that. Do you ever do for others, when you don't even have enough for yourself? Does it make you feel good? Or do you find it aggravating to have needy people around you when you are having a hard time yourself?

I'm a bit more selfish. Living in in the city is good for me. I'm not rich either so I don't (and can't) look after others. I think building up your own financial stability is first in nowadays. You can't eat, travel, get clothes without it.
