I recently watched the new Hobbit: An Unexpected Adventure with my son. I was so disappointed for many reasons. I bragged about the old animated version of this classic J.R.R. Tolkien story. I got a hold of the old 1977 animated version of The Hobbit, and watched it, also with my son. I had such a good time, sang the songs, and loved every minute of it. My son, age 15 thought the cartoon was stupid and liked the new one better. I am interested in seeing how they bring Smog to life, but I still love the old cartoon. Have you seen both of these movies? Which one do you like better?

I can't believe I have to wait for two more movies to see Smog, the dragon. Have you seen the other Lord of the Ring movies?

It's a classic. And be prepared... it's old school. I probably just like it so much because I was a kid when it came out. and it brings back memories.

i haven't watched any of the two movies, the 1977 version and the latest one. :D i think though that i might not like it as much as i liked the Lord of the rings movie. :D friends i know said that the hobbit was not as good as the lord of the rings... so i think i would just watch it on dvd. :D

You should watch them. I think movies are GREAT!! And even though I don't really care for one or the other, you might have different taste, and enjoy something that I do not.

I have to say I've never seen the animated versions of either "The Hobbit" or "Lord of the Rings"..Peter Jackson's Movies have been the first versions of the stories I've seen on screen, though I have the books the Movies are based on.

I grew up with the animated Hobbit. My dad loved it but I always thought it was really pitiful. I didn't like the songs, I thought they were corny at best. The final "battle" was essentially a bunch of dots darting around the screen.
Not liking the animated films (there was one for Return of the King too and I liked it even less) put me off wanting to see the new Lord of the Rings when I was a teen for awhile. But when I finally did, I became a Tolkien fanatic. Now I've read all the books and even some of the extras like the Unfinished Tales and the Silmarillion.
I adored the new Hobbit. I've seen it twice now and I'm shooting for a third. So the choice is clear for me, new version.

My dad loved the old one too. That might be why I have a fondness for the animated one. I won't deny that the new Hobbit was a good movie, it was a bit too long for my liking.
Thank you so much for your thorough response.
