Wait! What? Nobody gives me money on New Years
If they did, I'd hop on up to the local mini-mart and buy myself one of those $0.10 a piece candies because that's about all my parents are likely to give me.

Thanks for your answer! You said that your parents would only give you $0.10 on New Year? Maybe it's not a custom for people in your country to give lucky money on New Year.I'm sure that on Christmas Day you will receive lots of gifts, right? Farewell.

No,it s really not a custom for us. They do have Chinese New year in which they hand out money to children. That's in some parts of the US, but not were I live.

Hi wwjwcom, my husband's elder sister still gives us ang pow, red packet with money in it on Chinese New Year I'm the one who will give money to the younger on the festival Some times boss will give ang pow to us too. I usually would keep the ang pow and will open them after the 15th of the Chines lunar calendar. I will keep the money in piggy bank. I haven't taken out any money from it yet.
Happy posting

Hi,Ikbooi. You also have a piggy bank?Hah.I only put coins in my piggy bank if I have one. It's not full even though I have put coins in it for two years because I sometimes take out some to take the bus.So it's really determined for your not taking any money from it.Maybe I should consider buying a piggy bank without a cap.

When I was small, I do receive red packets with money inside
during Chinese New Year. My father will give me RM2 with a lottery
ticket. If the number strike, I will be RICH, if not just the RM2.
Not much money though that I can collect as most of my relatives do
not give much. Most of it is either RM2 or RM4, except my eldest
sister will give RM20.00. All in all on average I will receive
about RM200. So I will just keep it in the back after Chinese
New year. I was told not to open the red packet or spend it off
during the Chinese New Year 15 days. The money that I saved throughout
the years I used to pay for my study fees in college.

What good luck you have! The money you receive can be used to pay for the college fee. You're really a mature and good child for your parents.Just take a little out and buy yourself something. After all,New Year is a festival which should make people happy.

Where is it a habit that family is giving each other money on New Year? Since I never heard of it and it's surely not in the countries where I have been.
It's also (the Netherlands) not very common to give money at all to someone at a celebration or birthday or wedding. More and more people do ask for it (they need it or like to buy something they like instead of getting presents they don't) but still many people do not find it look like a present. Or they feel forced to give more as they actually are able to spend. 10 euro might look like less but if you buy a present for that price or half the price you can show up with a great present.
I would safe money for what I need if someone would give me any.

I know that people in most of the countries give presents for their friends and relatives. In China, people will give lucky money to kids and it has been a tradition for a long long time.We indeed will receive presents that we don't like that much.Sometimes it can save us time to choose a gift for others and they can buy what they like with the money.

I have never gotten money for the New Year, I've gotten money for Christmas. We buy things for our kids with it that we think they need that they might not haven gotten for Christmas.

Really? I always think that you get just gifts instead of money on Christmas. It's good to hear that you make good use of it.Good luck!

Wow, I wish my family gave us lucky money on new years. But with Christmas being about a week before, I have zero complaints about that. On new years instead, many of us are partying, or in church, or just spending time reflecting on the year we've had and how we want the next one to go.

Hi,KidHeartLess.Interesting name.what you said remind me of the memories in middle school and high school. It really made me worried in each New Year since the score of final test were given out just before the New Year.Good scores would bring me a happy festival and lots of money.Vice versa.

Much better if you save the money and use it for something useful or important in the future. Most often than not, people tend to use the money as soon as they receive them. But what happens if you had an emergency and you need money but there isn't any? I think it is really wise to save something every time we get hold of money.

I have the same idea with you. However, some people say that put money in the bank is not a wise way because the comsuption level is higher and higher. My friends say that I should learn to invest.
